Johannesburg – The department of international relations would continue in its attempts to rectify the travel restrictions of former ANC freedom fighters in some international countries, it said on Monday.

“The SA government has repeatedly raised this matter with the US and will continue until this matter is sorted,” said international relations spokesperson Clayson Monyela.

The New Age reported earlier that ANC stalwart Tokyo Sexwale had been briefly detained by immigration control at the John F Kennedy International Airport in New York last week.

His lawyer Leslie Makhabela said: “They alleged he posed a threat to international security.”

Sexwale and many other anti-apartheid activists had been on a list of people banned from entering several countries since the apartheid era.

They were not removed after the country gained democracy in 1994.

Sexwale had since returned to the country.

EWN reported on Monday that Sexwale was embarrassed by the incident, and was also surprised, as there had been assurances 10 years ago that the names had been removed.

North West Premier Thandi Modise has called on police management to investigate the alleged assault of an off-duty policeman by three of his colleagues based at Potchefstroom Police station on Saturday morning.

“The conduct of the police officers if indeed it is true is despicable and warrants for drastic steps measures to be taken against those involved as it tarnishes the image of the police. Police brutality is abhorred by the public and should be stamped out of the police service and those involved should be stripped of the dignified blue uniform,” said Premier Modise.

According to a media report by Taung Daily News, the incident occurred on Saturday morning around 01:30am.It is alleged that an off-duty police Constable Shepherd Malekanyo,27, was driving home in the early hours when he came across a man allegedly assaulting his girlfriend.

Malekanyo allegedly stopped and mediated between two lovers and assisted the 31 year-old woman to phone her younger sister to come and pick her up and upon her arrival at the scene of the off-duty policeman accompanied them to the police station to lay a charge of assault.

At the police station, the two lovers reportedly continued quarreling and wanted to lay charges of assault against each other. The off-duty Malekanyo stationed at Ikageng police station near Potchefstroom was allegedly manhandled when he tried to explain the situation to the three police officers.       

The officers allegedly followed Malekanyo’s vehicle in their state vehicle and ordered him back to the police station where they detained him for three hours in a holding cell for interfering with police duty but was later released without a formal charges being laid against him.

Malekanyo reportedly opened a case of assault and unlawful arrest upon his release.

North West defending Champions Al’s Puk Tawana moved one step closer to reclaiming their Sasol League provincial championships after defeating Florentina 7 – 0 at the Sasol League road show held at Montshiwa Stadium, Mafikeng earlier today.

A hat-trick from Nondumiso Shelembe, accompanied by a brace from Mathapelo Mokgethi and a goal each from Jane Mkhonza and Mmamodu Nkosi saw Al’s Puk Tawana dominating their opponents throughout the 90 minutes of the match.  Jane Mkhonza’s goal was awarded the Sasol “Shikisha” Moment as she took a thunderous shot from a set piece to put her team in the lead as early as the 7

th minute of the game, whilst Mmamodu Nkosi was awarded the Sasol Diski Queen for her influential performance in the game contributing one goal and 3 assists.

In earlier events on the day Banyana Banyana Coach Joseph Mkhonza and his technical team spent time with the female football coaches in the province to share their knowledge and experience in coaching women’s football. Topics such as warm ups, injuries and identifying players’ strengths and weakness were some of the methods of training that were discussed during the workshop.

This was followed by an open trials session where the Banyana Banyana technical team put 75 players through their paces in an effort to identify potential talent, for the ever increasing pool of players in which the national team coaches, across all age groups, could draw players for future international matches. 

“As we look forward to the 2014 Banyana Banyana season, we need to start strengthening our National Team for the 2014 African Women’s Championship in Namibia. We need to put our best team forward in a bid to qualify for our first ever FIFA Women’s World Cup that will be taking place in Canada in 2015. Events such as the Sasol League road shows afford us the opportunity to do a nationwide search for the best women football players in the country,” said Mkhonza

In the other Sasol League match of the day, the host team North West University went down by 2 – 1 to Western Tigers after taking an early lead through Nontobeko Ntyatyela. Western Tigers fought back and finally equalised through a corner kick by Mogomotsi Ramothwe before Kesentseng Mongale found the winner for the visitors. Mogomotsi’s goal was also judged as the Sasol “Shikisha” Moment of the game as she scored straight from the corner kick spot. The title of the Sasol Diski Queen for this match was awarded to Keitumetse Kole from North West University.

The 2013 Sasol League season will come to an end at the Sasol League National Championships taking place in Klerksdorp, North West from Monday, 25

JOHANNESBURG – Multiple award-winning artist Khuli Chana is recovering in hospital after allegedly being shot by police in a case of mistaken identity.

The incident occurred in Midrand in the early hours of Monday morning.

Chana’s manager Refiloe Ramogase confirmed that the artist had been shot.

According to Ramogase, police identified Chana’s car as matching the description of a vehicle belonging to a kidnapping suspect.

Ramogase told eNews Sunrise that police in unmarked vehicles opened fire on Chana’s car.

He said that Chana was lucky not to be more seriously injured. Chana sustained a bullet wound to his hand, and there is shrapnel lodged in his back.

Chana was the only person in the car at the time.

Ramogase told eNCA that Chana’s vehicle was driving “at 40 kilometres an hour” and that police had “ample time” to stop the vehicle.

He said that they would be pressing charges of attempted murder later on Monday.
