North West-Animals are an important part of our lives and must be treated with utmost care, North West Premier Thandi Modise said as part of her International Animal Week message of support.

International Animal Week is celebrated every year across the world between October 4 and October 10.

Premier Modise also used the opportunity to appeal to poaching gangs to stop rhino poaching. She appealed to all communities especially those living around rhino reserves to be vigilant and inform authorities of any suspicious poaching activity.

“We once again appeal to our people to leave our rhinos alone. Rhinos are amongst the most endangered species today and that is why we are taking zero tolerance approach to poaching and we want our communities to support the fight against this horrendous crime. Otherwise, rhinos will become extinct,” said Premier Modise.

“We must recognise the role of animals in our lives, both domestic and wild animals. Wild animals are our pride and heritage. They also contribute to our economy especially through tourism. Domestic animals are also an important part of our livelihood and must be cared for in the best way possible,” reiterated the Premier.

The Rhino is the most Endangered Species in Africa. Since 2008 South Africa has lost over 2000 rhinos, a figure that increases daily as rhinos continued to be killed and their horns removed.

Rhino horns are mostly sold in the black market overseas especially in Asia where they are widely used for medicinal purposes and as a status symbol, among others.-TDN

Tswaing-Residents of Ottosdal and Letsopa have been without water since Friday.

Eskom allegedly issued a notice of disconnection two weeks ago after non payment from the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality.

It is alleged that the municipality last paid electricity accounts in April.

“Eskom has since disconnected the power of 6 new boreholes, and this has shut down water supply to Ottosdal and Letsopa. This includes 11 of Tswaing municipality’s 15 wards” DA councillor in the area, Caren Visser said in a statement.

Visser said the District Municipality has known about this for some time, after Eskom gave notice of their intention to disconnect the electricity 3 weeks ago.

“All that the District Municipality had to do, was pay its bill on time, and this crisis would have been avoided” DA said.

The DA has allegedly attempted to contact the Municipal Manager, Dion Mere to assist in resolving this situation, but he has been non-responsive.

“The people of Ottosdal and Letsopa have the right to water as guaranteed by our constitution. The failure of the municipality to pay its bills and keep the water running is therefore not only a failure on delivery but also a human rights violation” Visser outlines.

According to opposition party, despite thousands of people being without water in extremely hot and dry conditions, no disaster relief is conducted by the District Municipality.

“Citizens are left to fend for themselves” said Visser.

They said the current state of affairs is utterly unacceptable.

“The Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality must pay its bills and restore the flow of water as soon as possible”.

DA said if the situation is not rectified shortly, they will approach the Human Rights Commission.-TDN

Malema: Being politically free with no economy is useless

Image

By Obakeng Maje

Rustenburg-Economic Freedom Fighters Commander-in-Chief Julius Malema addressed the residents of Rustenburg where most were striking mine workers.

Malema told the masses that having political freedom without being ecomomically free,is crestfallen.

“Back in 1994, you voted for economic freedom and fought against things you did not want. During apartheid era,you fought against match-boxes (small RDP houses), now you receive them from ANC-led government and they expect you to clap hands” Malema told masses.

He said the people must contemplate this matter and vote for Economic Freedom.

EFF said the white minority still owns the land. He said the disdainfully amongst rich and poor must be narrowed.

“If you have the land you own economy. South Africans must not learn to be only workers. They must own the land and become economically free.” Malema said.

One of striking miners said they support EFF 100% because they care for people on the ground.-TDN

Larsen: We were outclassed by very good Sundowns

Image

Bloemfontein Celtic coach Clinton Larsen believes his side was ‘totally outclassed’ by Mamelodi Sundowns as they were eliminated from the first round of the Telkom Knockout.

Siwelele will not be able to defend their title as they fell 4-0 at home to the Brazilians thanks to a goal by Dove Wome, an own goal Mzava and a brace from Khama Billiat.

“The game? It is very simple; we were totally outclassed by a very good team,” he says.

“But they must dust themselves off and continue soldiering on.

“First 45 minutes they got behind us once and the first goal was gifted by the goalkeeper’s clearance. In the first 45 minutes you go into the break 3-0 down- it is a bitter pill to swallow.

“There were times we built it up and we gave it away cheaply. There wasn’t enough penetration and we didn’t clean it up- it wasn’t our day.”

Celtic goalkeeper Patrick Tignyemb was at fault for two of the goals let in and the coach believes his Cameroonian shot-stopper will recover from his questionable form.

“I think he has made two or three mistakes this season and they are always blown out of proportion. He is a strong character and I am sure he will bounce back from this,” concluded Larsen.
