SA Crime at lowest in 15 years, says Minister

Nathi
PRETORIA – The Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa welcomed the IHS Crime Index report which has found that crime in South Africa is at its lowest level in 15 years. The report, which was released yesterday, further stated that crime rates dropped 38% since its peak during the 2002/2003 financial year.

The report is divided into two indices: the violent crime index and the property crime index. Property crime involves acts against one’s property, such as burglary and arson. Violent crime refers to crimes such as murder and rape.
“The decline in overall crime in South Africa has been echoed in both indices, reporting a steady decline since 2002. Violent crime is at the lowest level seen in a decade, declining some 40% between 2002 and 2013. Property crime experienced a decrease of 24% over the same period. The declining crime rates reflect the overall improvement of conditions in South Africa” said Minister Nathi Mthethwa.

The Minister said these findings vindicate government’s recently-released national crime statistics, which also focused on longitudinal downward trends. He added that whilst many local analysts were skeptical in their analysis of the statistics, it is gratifying that an internationally-recognized, credible and globally-respected institution has now affirmed the fact that crime is decreasing in South Africa.

“Since 1994, we have been making steady progress in the fight against crime. This period has been characterized by growing unity in action against crime, a period focused on improving life conditions for all, especially the poor. As part of our approach in reducing crime, we further recognized that the task of keeping our country safe cannot be achieved if we operate in silos. That is why we adopted a multi-pronged approach in the fight against crime, underpinned by the involvement communities, business, civic organisations, labour movements and many other stakeholders.”

“For this reason, almost on a weekly basis as the police leadership we are out there meeting with communities, not because there are problems, but as part of ensuring that we entrench this community-policing philosophy. Such community interactions also help us to tap onto the collective wisdom of citizens in order to enhance existing crime prevention and combatting programmes whilst jointly seeking solutions around crime,” added Minister Mthethwa.

“The IHS Crime Index serves as a great motivation to many hardworking police men and women, who against all odds, still continue to serve with dedication. We want to say whatever the challenges of the moment; nothing will deter these collective efforts between police and many law-abiding citizens in the quest towards crime reduction. However improbable it may sound to the skeptics, success is guaranteed. However long the night the dawn will break,” concluded the Minister.-TDN

clapham-winners
Durban-Impumelelo Stadium in Sibongile location, Dundee, will provide the backdrop for some Sasol League action when the Sasol League Road Show action comes to KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday, 2nd November. The road show coincides with provincial playoffs and will also see Banyana Banyana coach, Joseph Mkhonza and his technical team, conduct a coach’s workshop and a talent identification session.
“In the playoff defending provincial champions and Stream A table toppers, Durban Ladies (36 points from 12 matches) will take on Remax Shooting Stars who top Stream B (29 points from 12 games) at 15h00” said Safa spokesperson Dominic Chimhavi.

Chimhavi said both teams have Banyana Banyana players in their line ups with the likes of Amanda Dlamini, Zamandosi Cele, Silindile Ngubane and Memory Makhanya all plying their trade for the Durban Ladies side. On the Remax Shooting Stars side, goalkeeper, Nkosingiphile Zungu will be looking to keep her Banyana Banyana team mates at bay for the duration of the game.
The other match on the day will be a clash between second in Stream A, Galaxy FC (23 points from 11 games) taking on and fifth placed Sunflower FC who are second in Stream B (16 points from 12 games) at 13h00. Both matches are set to provide spectators and the Banyana Banyana technical team, alike with some scintillating footballing action.
“During both games Mkhonza and his technical team will be looking for that spectacular moment from a player who will then be awarded the Sasol “Shikisha” Moment of the game” he said.
Gates will open at 12h00 and the first 150 spectators will receive merchandise courtesy of Sasol, the league sponsors, and fans will also stand a chance to participate in a “Shikisha Skills Competition” and win great prizes during the half time break of each game.
Earlier in the day at 09h00, Banyana Banyana head coach Joseph “Skeshekheshe” Mkhonza and his technical team will address Sasol League club mentors from the province, on technical aspects of coaching women football players.
At 10h00, Joseph Mkhonza and his team will continue with their objective to spot quality football talent that will strengthen the pool of players for the Sasol sponsored South African National Women’s Football Team (Sasol Banyana Banyana) and possibly unveil talent for the junior women’s national team as they have done in the past four years.
Since 2009, the Sasol League talent identification programme has allowed for some exciting new talent to be identified for possible selection to the senior national team. In its fifth year, the Sasol League, through the promotional road shows, has seen over 150 players across the country being included in a pool for possible selection into both the junior and senior national teams.
“It is important to have a good pipeline of players for the national team and the Sasol League is just the place for that pipeline. Next year is a very important year for Banyana Banyana; the team has African Women’s Championships qualifiers early in the year with the tournament taking place later around October in Namibia. Finding new talent for the national team is an on-going exercise as we are building towards the 2015 World Cup and beyond, we can never have enough depth and that is why we have to consistently look for the next big stars,” said Mkhonza.
The Eastern Cape will also be playing their playoff matches this weekend. City Lads who have not lost a game this season will be looking to further continue their dominance in the Eastern Cape when they take on Coastal United. Other playoff games in the Eastern Cape will see Red Roses take on Thunderbirds, Manchester Babes take onMqanduli Ambassadors and Cumakala take on Birmingham. All of these games will be played in East London.
The 2013 Sasol League season will culminate at the Sasol League National Championships taking place in Klerksdorp, North West Province from Monday, 25th November – Sunday, 01 December 2013.-TDN

PSL CEO: Bucs need that second star

Football - 2013 CAF Champions League Last 16 2nd Leg - TP Mazembe v Orlando Pirates - TP Mazembe Stadium - Lubumbashi
PSL CEO Brand de Villiers says Orlando Pirates “need to get” a second star on their badge.

The Buccaneers have one star above their emblem, after winning the CAF African Champions Cup back in 1995, and have the chance to add another this month.

They face Egyptian giants – and holders – Al Ahly in the first leg of the CAF Champions League Final at Orlando Stadium this Saturday.

Kick-off is at 8.30pm.

“This is a big moment for South Africa and Southern African football,” De Villiers says.

“We have waited for almost two decades for one of our clubs to win the CAF Champions League and Orlando Pirates are just two games away from reclaiming continental victory. This is a proud moment for me as a CEO of the League and a South African.

“I would like to wish the club, its chairman Dr [Irvin] Khoza, coach Roger de Sa, his technical team and the players the best of luck this weekend.”

De Villiers called on fans to set aside their club differences and rally behind the Bucs.

“It is important that as South Africans we put all our club allegiances aside and rally behind Orlando Pirates when they face Al Ahly at Orlando Stadium. Fans must purchase a ticket and go to the stadium.

“Orlando Pirates have been brilliant so far, now they need to get that second star.”

Pirates first won the CAF Champions League back in 1995. Since then, no other Southern African side has managed to win the African showpiece.

Benedict Vilakazi and Manqoba Ngwenya are reported to be “stranded” in Botswana, after Notwane FC neglected to pay their salaries.

KickOff.com reported back in August that the two former stars had joined the Botswana Premiership club, both signing three-year deals.

However, according to a report on BBC Sport the relationship quickly went south.

The report claims ‘Tso’ and ‘Shakes’ are owed three months salary by Nontwane, and are “yet to receive their signing-on fees, salaries and allowances”.

The pair were also allegedly “thrown out” of their hotel – without their luggage – because of unpaid bills.

Botswana Footballers’ Union (BFU) spokesperson Kgosana Masaseng told BBC Sport that Ngwenya and Vilakazi are being put up at a lodge in Gaborone, while they wait for club owner Gift Mogapi to return from an international trip.

“We want out, we have had enough. If we had accommodation it was going to be better. Now we don’t even have anywhere to sleep as even our luggage is held by the hotel,” ‘Tso’ is reported to have said.

The pair are said to earn about US$2,400, making them the highest paid players in the Botswana League.
