Patrick Phungwayo blow for Pirates

Image

The MTN8 Final proved to be a double blow for Orlando Pirates as they not only lost the match, but also Patrick Phungwayo for a considerable length of time.

The Buccaneers lost the match 3-1 on penalties, with the defender having to be substituted five minute before half-time with a leg injury.

His replacement, Thabo Matlaba, scored the equaliser for Pirates, but in the end it was not enough.

And afterwards Phungwayo revealed on Twitter that his season was over.

“Hard lucky boys and its confirmed I’m out my season is over,” he wrote.

Platinum Stars Crash Pirates To Crowned Champions

MTN8 Final

Result: Pirates 1-1 (1-3 pen) P Stars

Date: 28 September 2013

Venue: Moses Mabhida Stadium

Platinum Stars were crowned 2013 MTN8 champions after they beat Orlando Pirates 3-1 in a penalty shootout at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday. The game ended 1-1 after extra-time.

The game started at a snail-pace, though Dikwena did manage to create one decent early chance. A fourth minute free-kick was whipped into the near post by Patrick Malokase but was dealt with before Rooi Mahamutsa got stuck in to deflect a shot off target moments later.

The next real opportunity came in the 21st minute with Kermit Erasmus deciding to let fly from far out and his dipping shot was caught by Siyabonga Mpontshane at the second attempt.

The former SuperSport United man was trying to bring the game to life and three minutes later Erasmus turned his defender before turning on the pace but his finish was deflected off target.

Daine Klate then produced a sublime turn to beat his defender in the 30th minute before sliding a pass to Erasmus who cut inside but powered his finish over when he should have gone for placement.

Happy Jele lashed a shot wide in the 38th minute before the Sea Robbers suffered a blow with Patrick Phungwayo coming off injured with Thabo Matlaba replacing him.

Oupa Manyisa tested the goalkeeper with a powerful low strike in the 41st minute while Mahamutsa couldn’t get enough on his header from a corner moments before the half-time whistle.

The breakthrough finally arrived after the break and it came from Stars as Robert Ng’ambi powered his header past a helpless Meyiwa after Benson Mhlongo had flicked the ball on.

Jele then sent a header miles over after a brilliant run from Matlaba in the 50th minute before Erasmus saw his neat finish ruled out for offside. Though replays suggested that the attacker was in line with the last defender.

Molangoane decided to hit the turf in search of a penalty four minutes after replacing Segolela but the referee waved his appeal away.

Mogakolodi Ngele tested Meyiwa with a free-kick but Pirates would ensure that the game went to extra-time as Matlaba produced another stunning strike from range which rattled the back of the net before the goalkeeper could react.

The game opened slightly as legs began to tire in extra-time and arguably the best chance came to Erasmus who was picked out by a powerful low cross from Matlaba but somehow he sent it wide from close range.

Penalties were needed and Pirates produced some horrible spot-kicks in the rain with Lennox Bacela, Ndumiso Mabena and Rooi Mahamutsa all missing the target as Stars claimed the crown.

Pirates: Senzo Meyiwa, Rooi Mahamutsa, Happy Jele, Patrick Phungwayo, Siyabonga Sangweni, Lehlogonolo Masalesa, Oupa Manyisa, Daine Klate, Tlou Segolela, Kermit Erasmus, Lennox Bacela.

P Stars: Siyabonga Mpontshane, Elias Ngwepe, Vuyo Mere, Tshepo Gumede, Benson Mhlongo, Robert Ng’ambi, Patrick Malokase, Issa Sarr, Tintswalo Tshabalala, Siphelele Mthembu, Sibusiso Msomi.

Marikana painting back at Joburg Art Fair- report

Image

Johannesburg – A controversial painting focusing on the Marikana shootings is back up at the First National Bank Joburg Art Fair after a protest by artists, eNCA reported on Saturday.

Ayanda Mabulu’s Yakhalinkomo – Black Man’s Cry was removed in the “interest of the artists, sponsors, buyers and audiences”, said the exhibition’s organisers.

But Mabulu’s fellow artists withdrew their pieces in protest. Mabulu’s painting is now back up, reported eNCA.

Mabulu told City Press that he received a call from his gallery, Commune1, on Thursday, the day of the opening of the fair, informing him that the painting would no longer be shown.

The artist became infamous for painting President Jacob Zuma with his penis exposed – before Brett Murray did the same with The Spear.

Yakhalinkomo depicts a kneeling miner with horns on his head, metaphorically representing a dying bull. He is being attacked by Zuma’s dog that signifies the police. Zuma, who is dressed in a suit during the blood sports, steps on another dying miner’s head.

Danny Jordaan has been named as the new South African Football Association president after the elections were held at Helderfontein Estate on Saturday.

Jordaan went head-to-head with Mandla Mazibuko in the bid to replace outgoing president Kirsten Nematandani and the former has won the battle.

Announcing the news via SAFA’s official Twitter account, the association said: “Danny Jordaan is new Safa pres with 162 to 88.”

Jordaan played an instrumental part in helping South Africa in their successful bid for the 2010 FIFA World Cup – the first World Cup on African soil.

The elections of the vice presidents were also concluded, with Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana, Lucas Nhlapo and Elvis Shishana getting the nod, while Mazibuko had withdrawn from the race.

An earlier Tweet from SAFA read, “Mandla Mazibuko indicating he is withdrawing from the Safa Vice President position as voting for the VPs continues.”

They then confirmed the outcome, adding, “Safa Vice Presidents Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana, Lucas Nhlapo, Elvis Shishana.”

By TDN

Johannesburg-Paramedics responded to the Caravan Park on Frikkie Meyer Boulevard in Vanderbijlpark just before 6pm on Saturday evening where there was reports of a drowning of a young man.

“When they arrived at the scene, they found around 200 people that appeared to have been having a party at the river side” Er24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said.

According to witness reports, the 22 year old young man had gone into the water and he had not been able to climb out again.

Jackson said it remains to be investigated as to why he could not get out of the river or as to how long he had been submerged before he was noticed to have been missing and in the river. Paramedics also explained that the water was very cold, and that this may also have lead to the young man not being able to remove himself.

“The SAPS rescue divers were called to the scene and they removed the lifeless body of the young man from the river” she said.

Paramedics assessed him for any signs of life but sadly there was no more that could be done to revive him and he was declared dead.-TDN

7 perish in horrific accident

Image

Johannesburg – Seven people were killed in a head-on collision on the N14 between Ventersdorp and Krugersdorp on Saturday, paramedics said.

It appeared that a sedan and a bakkie collided when thick smoke from a nearby veld fire reduced visibility to zero, ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said in a statement.

“As paramedics were declaring the initial five adults deceased, including three men and two women, they found a 9-month-old baby boy that had also been involved in the crash. He too had sustained such extensive injuries that he was declared dead,” Jackson said.

Later, an injured woman who was airlifted to Fourways Life hospital had died as a result of the injuries that she sustained.

The people travelling in the bakkie were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

“A 7-year-girl who was in the bakkie suffered a broken leg and was transported by ambulance to Leratong hospital.”

Eskom to cut power in two municipalities over millions of unpaid bills

Image

JOHANNESBURG – Eskom has issued notices to cut the power supply to two municipalities in the Free State with a debt of R400 million, it said on Friday.

The two municipalities, Maluti-a-Phofung and Ngwathe local municipality, will not have power in December if the matter is not resolved.

In a notice, Eskom said it would disconnect the bulk electricity supply to the Maluti-a-Phofung on December 4 if it failed to pay an outstanding amount of R205,679,819. The Ngwathe local municipality had until December 6 to pay R188,556,326.

Eskom said that as the sole provider of electricity to municipalities, it was obliged to supply such services on a financially sustainable basis.

The municipalities’ failure to timeously pay had jeopardised the financial sustainability of the supply.

Eskom invited all parties to submit written comments about the planned disconnection.

Democratic Alliance Free State MPL Peter Frewen said it was unacceptable that municipalities took payment on behalf of Eskom, with the authority to cut residents’ electricity supply in the event of non-payment, but themselves failed to pay Eskom.

“In the end, the people bear the brunt of poor management by the ANC government. Our councillors will engage with the municipal mangers in order to negotiate, without delay, repayment options with Eskom,” he said.

Clapham High Scoops R1m After Winning Kay Motsepe Cup

Image

Johannesburg-Gauteng’s Clapham High School took the R1 million first prize after winning the 2013 Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup. They beat Louis Botha Technical High School 2 – 1 in the final that took place at the King Zwelithini Stadium, Umlazi, Durban.

To hand out the trophy was Mr Patrice Motsepe, owner of Mamelodi Sundowns, the club that most of the players belong to.

“I am so happy,” said leading goal scorer, Khayelihle Shozi, who finished on 7 goals.

“To play before my president and all the scouts that put me where I am today was an honour. I wanted to show them that the decision to bring me into the Sundowns Academy was the right one.”

Clapham finished the tournament winning every game they played scoring an impressive 27 goals in 8 games averaging over 3 a game.

Louis Botha might have finished in second place but they were very pleased with this and the R600 000 that went with it. Coach, Prince Sani believes that it is not about winning but the experience.

“This is our first time in this tournament and to get this far is fantastic. Further, I only formed the team this year so they are new and we will keep working and will definitely be back next year. This is such a good experience for the boys.”

Sani believed that playing in the final against a team that is so tactical and technical astute only helped his boys see what true professional football is all about. “We have all loved our trip to Durban and will most definitely go back home wiser footballers.”

Meanwhile Rosina Sedibane Modiba beat Harmony High school 2 – 1 to clinch third place. “We travelled to Durban with Clapham, who beat us to win the provincial finals, and have built a really good relationship with them. We were hoping to meet them in the final, but finishing third is also good. The R500 000 will come in handy to further improve the school.
