Gupta mansion raided by police – report

CrimeTapeSmall
Johannesburg – A mansion in Umhlanga Rocks, north of Durban, owned by the Gupta family was one of several properties raided by police looking for stolen IT stock, The Star newspaper reported on Friday.

A manager at Sahara Computers, also owned by the Guptas, was one of eight people arrested in the raid on Tuesday, according to the report.

The arrests were linked to a plan to scam Cape Town-based IT hardware distributor Syntech out of around R250 000 worth of stock.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson told The Star the eight arrested people appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Thursday and were granted bail.

Police Captain Frederick van Wyk reportedly confirmed a case had been opened in Cape Town and those arrested in Durban charged with fraud.

Gupta family spokesperson Gary Naidoo told Sapa on Friday afternoon he would issue a statement on the matter at a later stage.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Johannesburg – Two men accused of trying to sell live crocodiles appeared in the Mankweng Regional Court on Friday, Limpopo police said.

The matter would resume on 1 November, said police spokesperson Matimba Maluleke.

In August, the two were granted bail of R1 000 each.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) took the crocodiles to a sanctuary.

Ex-UN chief to give Tutu birthday lecture

40fa716e235b40db96cd3c6581234a98
Cape Town – Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu celebrates his 82nd birthday next month with a series of charitable events and former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan will be delivering his annual peace lecture.

On 7 October Annan will follow in the footsteps of Graça Machel and the Dalai Lama.

The Tibetan spiritual leader gave his friend’s inaugural birthday lecture via a video link-up, after he was denied a visa to enter SA.

Pretoria has increasingly close ties with Beijing, which considers the Dalai Lama a violent separatist.

Before the speech Tutu will donate a sports field to a Cape Town school, and hand out gifts to the elderly.

The diminutive clergyman will also use the day to spread the message of caring for the environment.

A critic of the ANC, Tutu remains one of the prominent moral authorities of modern-day South Africa.

His wife of 58 years, Leah, will celebrate her 80th birthday on 14 October.

ANC takes M&G to ombudsman

anc-logo
Johannesburg – The African National Congress has lodged a complaint against the Mail & Guardian with the Press Ombudsman, the party said on Friday.

ANC national chairperson Baleka Mbete submitted the complaint to the ombudsman this week over reporting about her on 6 and 13 September, spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said.

“The ANC supports the national chairperson’s assertion that the Mail & Guardian has deliberately sought to distort and misrepresent information,” he said.

The newspaper reported that mining company Gold Fields “buried” a New York law firm’s finding that a R25m share allocation to Mbete constituted bribery.

Motshekga: Pupil’s attack on teacher outrageous

cdba26129f794f0a952aba9258115b21
Johannesburg – Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga is outraged over a Grade 8 pupil’s attack on a teacher at Glenvista High School, her office said on Friday.

“The minister is disturbed by the violent behaviour of a Glenvista learner and would recommend all of those present be given trauma counselling after this violent event,” spokesperson Troy Martens said in a statement.

“This incident must be condemned in the strongest possible terms and the relevant punishment must be meted out.”

A video of the assault, which happened on Wednesday, was captured by a fellow pupil and went viral on Thursday.

The footage shows the pupil unsuccessfully trying to retrieve what looks like a school bag from the teacher at the school, south of Johannesburg.

After failing to get it back, he hits and kicks the teacher, then throws a chair and a broom as the teacher walks out of the classroom.

“The student responsible, together with the other learners who were cheering him on should all be disciplined accordingly,” Martens said.

Violence would not be tolerated in schools, from teachers, pupils, or their parents.

“Corporal punishment is not an option either as this is a form of violence in itself,” Martens said.

Rather, parents and communities needed to share the responsibility of teaching children standards of acceptable behaviour.

“Schools should not be the only place where children are taught morals as this should begin at home.”

The South African Schools Act contained a number of policies around violence in schools, which needed to be implemented at provincial level, she said.

Top cop turns down call for specialised units

Police%20on%20duty
Cape Town – Western Cape police commissioner Arno Lamoer has dismissed calls to reintroduce specialised police drug and gang units.

“The successes when it comes to drugs are because every single police officer accepts ownership in the fight against drugs,” he told journalists at the release of the Western Cape’s 2012/13 crime statistics in Cape Town on Friday.

“If we have a specific unit to do that, the ownership goes to that unit alone… we’ve seen it and history has taught us that.”

Lamoer emphasised that specialised investigating units, such as the Hawks and a task team, were analysing “certain trends” in the province.

The latest statistics, for the financial year from April 2012 to March 2013, painted a bleak picture for the Western Cape.

Violent crime, such as murder, assault, and robbery, increased by 10%, and Nyanga in Cape Town was again singled out for its murder rate.

Recently, the national government, the Western Cape government, and the City of Cape Town said they would work together to address the underlying causes of the high crime rate in the area.

“We want to welcome the initiatives from the provincial government in the Nyanga area,” Lamoer said.

“Safety and security can never only be the responsibility of the SA Police Service [SAPS].”

In 2012/13, 262 people were murdered in Nyanga.

Besides Nyanga, four other areas in Cape Town were among the areas with the top 10 highest murder rates in the country.

Khayelitsha had 168 murders, Harare 132, Gugulethu 129, and Delft 113.

The increased crime rates could be ascribed to a “toxic mix” of factors, such as gangsterism, drugs, and domestic violence, he said.

Woman, cat both bitten by night adder

Image

Durban – A woman was left in a serious condition after being bitten by a snake near her home in Inchanga on Wednesday.

According to reports, the woman, who is in her 30s, and a cat were both walking towards her house. As they approached the entrance, a night adder struck both the woman and the cat.

Chris Botha from Netcare 911 said: “Netcare 911 paramedics arrived at the scene and after stabilising the female, they transported her to an area hospital in Pietermaritzburg for the care that she required. The paramedics made arrangements and had the feline taken to a local vet for further care.”

“Adders and mambas are very common in KwaZulu-Natal. It is now snake season, so there will be more snake activity,” he said.

Taung gospel singer Shobi promises fireworks at North West Calabash

Image

By Obakeng Maje

Taung-North West Cultural Calabash comes alive at Taung coverground where revellers will be served to various genres of music, but on Sunday gospel music fanatics will be mesmerised by local gospel singer Shobi Reetseng who will share stage alongside Hlengiwe and Benjamin Dube.

Shobi Reetseng was born and bred at Manthestad village in Baga-Maidi circuit near Taung 35 years ago.

Shobi said he began singing in youth choir at Roman Catholic Church at an early age.

“The gospel music has a measure of strength, might and potency.  It revealed humanity in times of severe, brutal, and relentless hardships” he said.

Shobi was inspired by the late Vuyo Mokoena and said gospel music is a place of inspiration.

“I grew up with that passion for gospel music. And back in 1997, we went to Mmabana Taung for music competition and amazingly the late Vuyo Mokoena was there. I was very inspired by his words and decided to take my career very seriously” Shobi giggles.

Our crew asked Shobi why he chose gospel music over other genres. He swiftly responded and said gospel music have measure of strength.

“The Gospel Music experience cannot be told in a short story, or even in a melody of songs, for it is far too rich, far too harmonious and deliberately stimulating” he outlines.

Manthestad-born singer’s music career started to take shape when he released an album called “Motho Wa Lefatshe” that received a massive play on different radio stations across the country.

A sassy voice singer explains why he labelled the album “Motho Wa Lefatshe” and revealed challenges he went through life and how he dealt with trials and tribulations.

“Some of the most beautiful music of all times was born out of intense grief and suffering, and my album called Motho Wa Lefatshe is no exception. The album reveals challenges the person goes through in life”

“Whatever one does in life, whether good or bad people always have something bad to say about you. And putting trust in God, one will never go wrong” Shobi said.

Reetseng started school at Moshosho primary in the area and later went to Walter Letsie High.

He said education is very essential aspect and advised the youth to take their studies very seriously.

“To all up and coming artists must know challenges they will be faced with and my advice to them is, they must be passionate and love what they doing”

“I would love to have my own stable in five years time because Taung has abundance of talents, but with no exposure. So helping young artists is the least I could do” Shobi said.

Motho Wa Lefatshe fame singer will be sharing stage with world renowned gospel gurus like Hlengiwe and Benjamin Dube on Sunday.

“Sharing stage with world renowned is a living experience, so gospel is always changing, always giving, and always becoming the foundation that gave moral, physical and spiritual support to a great and powerful people, so I’m looking forward to that” he said.

There has been no other event in history of Taung that has been more compelling, convincing, or persuasive than North West Cultural Calabash.

And to many people gospel is Alpha and Omega of

God’s spiritual principle that plays upon the keyboard of mans integrity.

It is a resonance, an echoing sound throughout the ages that has surrendered the wonders of God’s Almighty creations.

“The past has revealed to us that all its secrets, and the future hangs over us like the mist of the morning, but the present is as clear and distinct as a mid-day sun” Shobi said.

He said the songs he wrote is for the emancipated people and give them courage through their difficulties and disappointments.

Even though Shobi is not signed to any recording label, he writes his own music.

A 35 year-old singer said he is still single, but is seeing someone…so ladies back off.

Shobi said he really appreciate a support he receives from his family and his fans at large.

He is busy working on a new album and promise fireworks on Sunday.

“My music carries them through the reconstruction period, desperate circumstances controlled our lives; despair and hope, life and death; but my music mirrored our predicaments as a collective group of people, it reflected upon our social status, and eventually reverberated in our made up minds that God was indeed on our sides” he concludes.-TDN

Image

Johannesburg – The Gauteng education department has condemned the assault of a teacher by a Grade 8 pupil at Glenvista High School in Johannesburg south.

“The head of department has already dispatched a team of senior officials to the school to ensure that immediate action is taken to suspend the learner, provide counselling to the educator and begin disciplinary process,” said spokesperson Gershwin Chuenyane on Thursday.

A video of the assault – which happened on Wednesday – was captured by a fellow pupil and went viral on Thursday.

It shows the pupil unsuccessfully trying to retrieve what looks like a school bag from the teacher.
