For the first time in his life the 66-year-old Maleho Majoe became the owner of his own home. The gesture was made by the North West MEC for Human Settlements Public Safety and Liaison Nono Maloyi when he handed over more than one thousand title deeds to the residents of Ikageng location extension 11 and 7 in Potchefstroom.
Jubilation was written all over Majoe’s face who could not explain the joy brought to him by government.
“I am happy now that government has made it possible that I own and have property of my own. Firstly they build a house for me, when I had nowhere to stay. They created a home for my six children and my sick wife. What else could I ask for,” said Majoe.
Majoe is amongst the one thousand beneficiaries that received title deeds which guaranteed those families ownership of their houses in Ikageleng.
Handing over the title deeds to beneficiaries MEC Maloyi, called on the residents of Ikageng to make sure that they take care of their houses and further make them homes.
Maloyi said that having a title deed will make them owners of their own properties.
“It is government’s responsibility to make sure that you have a shelter, as guided by the constitution. We will continue as government to make sure that all the residents become owners of their own properties”, said Maloyi.
He could not complete his speech before warning those who continue to rent their houses and stay in informal settlements in the area. He said that their gesture defeats government’s initiative of eradicating informal settlements and reduction of the housing backlog.
Earlier in the day MEC Maloyi handed over 50 houses in Ikageng extension 11. He called on beneficiaries to report defects if they find any on their newly build houses.
Maloyi called on contractors to enrol their houses with the National Home Builders Registration Council, to make sure that there is quality in the houses that they are building.-TDN

“Skierlik Terror” To Be Staged On Theatre

Phillip Dikotla - writer and actor of Skierlik
By TDN
Mahikeng-The powerful and shocking story of SkierIik, based on the tragic events that made news headlines in South Africa in 2008, comes under the spotlight for a theatrical re-run in Mahikeng for one week only.
Hosted in partnership between Mmabana Arts, Culture and Sports Foundation, Lentswe Arts Projects and the National Arts Council; Skierlik will be shown at Mmabana Head Office, Studio 1 from 24 to 28 September 2013 at 7pm every evening.

Written and performed by Phillip M. Dikotla who received the Arts and Culture Trust (ACT) Impact Award for theatre last year; Skierlik, produced by Karabo Kgokong was originally staged at Mmabana Studio 3 in 2011. This year, the production drew much public attention and has thus been staged on various stages across the country.
“The play’s genesis evolved from the horrific incident that shook South Africa on 14 January 2008, in the informal settlement called Skierlik, just outside Swartruggens in the North West Province. On that fateful day 17-year-old Johan Nel went on a shooting spree killing four people including a three-month old baby and wounding eight others. Nel was sentenced to four life sentences for the murders” Mmabana spokesperson Trinity Bogosi said.
The devastating massacre left tragic effects on survivors and on families who had lost their bread-winners. Determined to try restore what had been lost, by re-telling the tale of Skierlik on stage, Dikotla set out to write the play with hopes that the communities and audience members would relate to it.
Bogosi said the play sees Dikotla seamlessly embracing characters that represent the different faces of the people in Skierlik and his honest performance successfully draws the audience into fully experiencing the emotional journey of the incident.
“After I matriculated I wanted to be a theatre-maker so I joined the Market Theatre Laboratory. During my studies there, the terrible news about the Skierlik shootings broke and I was determined to write about it and so started my journey with this play,” explains Phillip Dikotla.

After winning Best Production at the Zabalaza Theatre Festival in March this year, the production got a full two weeks mainstream season at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town. At the Grahamstown National Arts Festival, Skierlik got awarded the Standard Bank Ovation award for its innovation and artistic excellence.

DA proposes grant changes

dbbf0376d69741f2b7b440406e6528fe
Cape Town – The DA proposed measures on Tuesday to ensure child grants are not abused, as part of their green paper on poverty relief.

DA parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko said social workers should be obliged to intervene if there was suspicion that grant conditions were being flouted, for example if a child was not attending school.

The party also called for the introduction of a community oversight system on grant spending.

This would allow teachers or others to apply for the grant to be paid out to another caretaker or to a social worker if grant money was not being spent in a child’s best interest.

To encourage behaviour that would help children overcome poverty, the party proposed that bonuses be paid to children for completing Grade 12.

This should be backed up by other measures to help the youth complete their studies and find jobs, including a comprehensive government intern programme and education vouchers for the unemployed.

If it were in power, the party would also provide transport and communication coupons for job-seekers and speed up the expanded public works programme in areas where unemployment was particularly high.

“A DA government will ensure that we have a growing economy, which will free millions from the shackles of poverty and allow people to move from welfare to work.

“The DA feels the pain of the millions that are unemployed, and we are determined to better their future,” she said.

Kapini Error Costs AmaZulu

ABSA Premiership

Result: Wits 1-1 AmaZulu

Date: 17 September 2013

Venue: Bidvest Stadium

Nkosinathi Mthiyane’s 62 minute header seemed set to give AmaZulu all three points away to Wits, and take them temporarily to the top of the Absa Premier League table, until a goalkeeping blunder by goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini gifted Getaneh Kedebe a simple tap-in to share the spoils at Bidvest Stadium.

Fans had to wait till after the 90 minutes for the match to spark into action, with Kofi Dankwa given his marching orders before Kapini’s last minute error cost Usuthu a win keeping Wit’s unbeaten run intact.

After a cagey first-half where both goalkeepers seemed to be on vacation, the best chance of the opening 45 minutes belonged to Wits’ Zimbabwean veteran striker Benjani, missing a close range chance for the home side.

Both teams came into this game off the back of 1-0 victories and were looking to consolidate their positions in the top half of the table and this showed in the first-half with the amount of respect shown to one another.

Gavin Hunt will be a relieved man after the Clever Boys unbeaten start to the season remained intact, however fortunate the result against Usuthu.

Ajax and Sundowns In Exciting Draw

e2eed9bc9f5c68a0fedbeab37f819ab6110
ABSA Premiership

Result: Ajax Cape Town 2-2 Mamelodi Sundowns

Date: 17 September 2013

Venue: Cape Town Stadium

Ajax Cape Town and Sundowns played to a thrilling 2-2 draw, after an exciting second-half, with all four of the goals coming in the last 45 minutes, including a controversial penalty. Former Ajax man Khama Billiat also hit the woodwork twice and could easily have won the game for Downs.

In just the third minute Eleazar Rodgers got on to the end of a Keagan Dolly cross, but his shot went straight into the hands of Kennedy Mweene.

In the eighth minute Rodgers had another golden opportunity as he beat the offside trap and raced free, but he chose to cross rather than shoot over an advancing Mweene and couldn’t find Dolly and Rashid Sumaila was able to clear.

In the 12th minute Khama Billiat was set up by Punch Masenamela after the left-back ran down the touchline and pulled it back for Billiat, but his first touch was too strong and he had to stretch to make a shot which went straight to Brandon Peterson.

A minute later Billiat made a good run down the touchline and his cross across the goalmouth got the better of Peterson but no Sundowns players could get onto the end of it.

In the 23rd minute Telinho had a half chance for Ajax, after receiving a good ball from young Bantu Mzwakali, who was impressing on debut, but he needed two touches of the ball and his shot deflected off the back of Bryce Moon and went over the goal.

The rain began to fall after the half hour mark as Sundowns dominated the possession, Ajax seemingly happy to counter attack at pace when they did get the ball.

Dové Womé made a good run to collect a long ball in the 36th minute and laid it back to Billiat but his shot from the edge of the box went straight at Peterson.

In the 40th minute Manyama, got a brilliant little pass from Dolly and was surging forward but was brought down by Sumaila on the edge of the box. Mzwakali stepped up to take the free kick but his curling shot clipped the cross bar and went over.

In the ref’s optional time Rodgers set Dolly up with a good pass, but Dolly’s shot from just outside the area flew straight at Mweene who blocked it and recovered to gather the ball, and at half-time it was 0-0.

Bongani Zungu scored the opener in the 51st minute, a great low shot past Peterson into the opposite corner. Masenamela delivered a good cross from the deep into the box, and Dominic Isaacs and Cuthbert Malajila both jumped to make the header. Isaac’s clearance fell into the path of Zungu, who finished superbly.

But Sundowns lead was short-lived. Dolly equalized in the 55th minute as he picked up a loose pass from Sumaila on the edge of the box, charged down the left and his powerful shot-come-cross snuck into the near post under a diving Mweene.

A minute later Billiat should’ve given Sundowns the lead but his shot, from a good Zungu cross, struck the post and bounced clear.

In the 66th minute Nathan Paulse, who had replaced Rodgers at half-time, won a penalty as he fell over Alje Schut’s leg. Manyama blasted the penalty past Mweene to give Ajax a 2-1 lead.

Katlego Mashego came on for Sundowns in the 75th minute and immediately took a free kick which forced a great save from Peterson.

Cuthbert Malajila equalized for Sundowns in the 80th minute after a goalmouth scramble from a corner. Malajila got onto the end of the corner kick and headed it at Peterson who saved, but couldn’t hold onto the ball. It fell to Zungu but his shot was also blocked by Peterson, however Malajila had got back to his feet and this time he made no mistake, and the ball flew into the goal.

Sundowns could have been in the lead a minute later, but Billiat, after dribbling into the box, hit the woodwork once again, his shot flying into the crossbar and bouncing clear.

How they started today:

Ajax Cape Town: Brandon Peterson, Dominic Isaacs [c], Cecil Lolo, Ritus Krjauklis, Thato Mokeke, Abbubaker Mobara, Stélio Ernesto (Telinho), Bantu Mzwakali, Eleazar Rogers, Lebogang Manyama, Keagan Dolly

Mixed Feelings For Larsen

edb9a8a30fd68440ea50b266c8dd7422110
Bloemfontein Celtic coach Clinton Larsen says that he has mixed feelings about his side’s 0-0 draw with Kaizer Chiefs on Tuesday night.

Larsen admits that his side had enough chances to snatch all three points, and that’s what he was hoping for with Celtic hosting the game.

The coach, though, believes that his squad is still looking to gel and feels that they will grow stronger as the season rolls on.

“Mixed feelings about the game. I felt at times we could have won the game, but I am really happy with the spirited performance of the boys,” he said.

“They have been showing us this game in and game out. Sometimes the results haven’t been coming but the commitment has never been questioned in this team.

“I think we are still trying to gel, a lot of new players still trying to find their feet. But I think we are heading in the right direction.

“Results may not be coming but we believe in what we are doing and we believe in our players and I’m sure as the season progresses we’ll get stronger as a unit.

“We never really had competition in a lot of positions and now I believe that there is a better balance in the team.

Regarding the end result, he said, “Disappointed. We are never happy with a point in the Free State.”

Baxter: Pitch Beat Both Teams

b211d67c94cd4014f9695a7c9a926854110
Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter believes that the condition of the pitch prevented his side from leaving the Free State with a win as they drew 0-0 with Bloemfontein Celtic.

Chiefs created numerous good chances throughout the game but failed to find their finishing touch as they had to settle for a point.

“I think probably the pitch beat both teams at the finish. It was very difficult to play on it. With regard to our performance I thought we were quite good in the first-half,” he said.

“We played some nice football but it was difficult to finish. It was difficult to finish on this pitch because your balance was affected, it was hard and bumpy.

“In the second-half, the first 15-20 minutes, we allowed Celtic to get some momentum. They took the initiative away from us. But I thought that after that we took it back and we created chances again.

“And again, we just tried to get the finishing touch which was so difficult on the pitch. I don’t think the boys could have played better on this surface.”

Asked if he was satisfied with the result, he continued, “We won the championships last year, and we drew with them in our home game. So, a point away from home… given the fact that we’ve won here before maybe at the moment I’m a bit disappointed. But I think once I realise that a point away from home is not a bad result… a lot of teams will come here and not get a point.”

Chiefs Fail To Fire At Celtic

ABSA Premiership

Result: Celtic 0-0 Chiefs

Date: 17 September 2013

Venue: Free State Stadium

Kaizer Chiefs were left to rue missed chances as they played out a 0-0 draw away to an organised Bloemfontein Celtic at the Free State Stadium on Tuesday night.

Amakhosi created the better of the opportunities throughout the first 45 minutes but some poor finishing allowed Celtic to start coming into the game. Celtic then looked to put the defending league champions under pressure in the second-half but neither side was able to find a goal.

Morgan Gould had the first real chance nine minutes into the game when he got up to meet a set-piece and sent his header inches over the crossbar.

Willard Katsande had an equally good chance from a corner three minutes later but his acrobatic attempt at the far post was just too high.

Siphiwe Tshabalala went down rather dramatically as he looked to earn a penalty soon after before Celtic finally responded with Joel Mogorsi thumping a low drive just wide with Itumeleng Khune scrambling.

Three minutes later the Phunya Sele Sele attacker was in the book after powerfully booting Tsepo Masilela who went in bravely with a header.

Knowledge Musona was showing signs of his confidence coming back as he was ready to fire at goal whenever he was given the slightest gap. The Zimbabwe striker first sent a free-kick just wide before a long-range volley dipped over the crossbar.

George Lebese picked out Reneilwe Letsholonyane perfectly in the 42nd minute but the Bafana Bafana midfielder powered his header off target while Khune was not convincing with a low shot that looked set to bounce in front of him but no Celtic player was following up to gobble up the rebound.

Chances dried up a bit in the second period with Musona hitting a shot off target three minutes in before Chiefs had to clear off the line 10 minutes later.

Ruzaigh Gamildien had his head in his hands after unleashing a superb shot which whistled just past the angle while Chiefs fans started getting restless with 22 minutes to go as Tshabalala sent a free-kick well over.

Kingston Nkhatha saw the ball drop for him in the 77th minute after Celtic messed up their clearance but the forward struggled to get the ball under control and his shot was closed down from inside the area.

Letsholonyane then set up the Zimbabwe striker with a sensational backheel off of a pass from Tshabalala but his final shot was scuffed and rolled wide while a patched up Tefu Mashamaite failed to power his header home with seven minutes to go.

Chiefs were desperately looking for a late winner and a composed passing move ended with Letsholonyane stretching to head over from close range while substitute Lehlohonolo Majoro just missed a cross from Tshabalala.

There was to be no late drama though as the game ended goalless with both sides settling for a point.

This is how they line up:

Chiefs: Itumeleng Khune, Siboniso Gaxa, Tefu Mashamaite, Morgan Gould, Tsepo Masilela, Willard Katsande, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Siphiwe Tshabalala, George Lebese, Kingston Nkhatha, Knowledge Musona.

Celtic: Patrick Tignyemb, Tumelo Mogapi, Thabo Nthethe, Clayton Daniels, Wandisile Letlabika, Vuyani Ntanga, John Arwuah, Lerato Lamola, Musa Nyatama, Letsie Koapeng, Joel Mogorosi.
