The IEC is looking into an objection by the Freedom Front Plus against the registration of the Economic Freedom Fighters as a political party, it said on Wednesday.
“We received an objection from the FF Plus. The matter has not yet been finalised. The outcome will be conveyed to the interested parties at the appropriate time,” Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) spokeswoman Kate Bapela said.

The IEC had to consider the application for registration by a party and objections in accordance with the Electoral Commission Act, she said.

On Tuesday, the FF Plus said it objected to registration of the EFF, led by expelled African National Congress Youth League leader Julius Malema, as a political party.

“The EFF propagates the nationalisation of land, mines, banks and other assets without compensation and in particular on a racial basis. It is unconstitutional,” FF Plus chairman Pieter Groenewald said.

“Malema has already been found guilty in the high court of hate speech about the singing of the controversial song ‘Shoot the Boer’ which has subsequently been declared to be hate speech.”

He said Malema had not shown remorse and would continue his “unconstitutional actions” by using the EFF as a vehicle for discriminatory actions and policies.

The party asked the IEC to decline the EFF’s application on constitutional grounds. Individuals and parties had until the end of last week to object to the IEC about the registration of any party.

On Monday, the EFF postponed its official launch, planned to take place in Marikana, North West, at the weekend. The party said the postponement was due to the incomplete process at the IEC.
