CAF Champions League

Result: Pirates 4-1 Zamalek

Date: 17 August 2013

Venue: Orlando Stadium

Orlando Pirates continued their Egyptian demolition by hammering Zamalek 4-1 in their CAF Champions League clash on Saturday night at the Orlando Stadium.

The Sea Robbers suffered an early blow as Andile Jali had to come off injured but the brilliant Lennox Bacela boosted their morale with a superb finish in the 27th minute. Mahmoud Shikabala took just two minutes to respond though as they ensured that the game remained deadlocked at the interval.

Pirates turned up the heat in the second period though with goals from Tlou Segolela, Sifiso Myeni and Daine Klate wrapping up an emphatic win.

The game got off to a scrappy start but Happy Jele would get the first real chance when he latched onto a free-kick from Klate but saw his header go wide.

Jele then produced a weak effort in the 13th minute before Gaber’s long-range strike was turned around the post by Senzo Meyiwa.

Jali took a knock and tried to run it off but he was unable to do so and was swiftly replaced by Lehlogonolo Maselesa.

Bacela was looking lively and saw a shot blocked in the 24th minute but would not be denied three minutes later when he was found by Klate and he turned his defender to thump home an emphatic finish.

Their joy lasted just two minutes though as Shikabala got free of Rooi Mahamutsa at the other end and produced a clinical finish to restore parity.

Segolela worked the goalkeeper moments later before Klate was denied by the Zamalek stopper as Pirates looked to get back in front.

Oupa Manyisa was teed up late in the half by Klate but his effort was wide of the target as the score remained at 1-1.

Seven minutes after the break Pirates would restore their advantage in spectacular fashion. Bacela slipped an inch-perfect pass to Segolela who curled a delicious finish past the goalkeeper with the outside of his foot.

The White Knights struggled to create chances as Pirates were composed on the ball but the visitors were still in the game and Meyiwa had to make a brave run off his line to smother the danger in the 69th minute.

The hosts launched the ball up to the other end quickly and Klate curled a pass into Myeni who killed the ball with a superb touch before calmly picking out the bottom corner with 19 minutes to go.

Pirates were now well in control and a fourth would duly arrive when Segolela took the ball to the by-line before lashing in a low cross which Klate put in off of the goalkeeper.

The Buccaneers popped the ball around in the final few minutes to see out a comfortable win as they moved three points clear at the top of Group A after Al Ahly beat AC Leopared in Dolisie on the same day.

Pirates: Senzo Meyiwa, Happy Jele, Rooi Mahamutsa, Lucky Lekgwathi, Thabo Matlaba, Daine Klate, Andile Jali, Oupa Manyisa, Sifiso Myeni, Tlou Segolela, Lennox Bacela.

SA inequality concerning- Mo Ibrahim

Image

Pretoria – The gap between rich and poor in South Africa is of great concern, philanthropist Mo Ibrahim said on Saturday.

“After [nearly] 20 years of independence, one can ask ‘what is going on here?’. South Africa is the most unequal country in the whole world,” he said.

Ibrahim was delivering an annual Nelson Mandela Lecture in Pretoria.

He said the country’s land policy and the willing seller willing buyer principle should be revisited.

“Isn’t it time to find an equitable solution within the Constitution? This is an important issue that needs serious attention.”

BEE policy

It was also time to re-visit the Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) policy to see whether it had achieved what it had set out to do.

“Did it [BEE] bridge the gap between the rich and the poor? We need to have a conversation on that for the sake of social cohesion.”

Ibrahim said that half of the continent’s population was below the age of 19.

African youth could become the best in the future in terms of production.

This was because the population of countries such as China and many European countries were ageing, Ibrahim said.

“But to do that, we need good education and training to equip these youngsters for the future. Through that, Africa can become the future factory of the world.”

The African Index of Governance published by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, showed that South Africa moved from 31st position out of 54 African countries in 2000 to 22 last year.

The index measures the African countries’ performance in terms of governance.

South Africa showed great improvement, but still needed to do more, he said.

Bafana restore their pride

Nelson Mandela Sports and Culture Day

Full Time: South Africa 2-0 Burkina Faso

Date: 17 August 2013

Venue: FNB Stadium

South Africa were by far the superior side as they ran out 2-0 winners over Burkina Faso at the FNB stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Bafana Bafana dominated the possession stakes and were on top from the word go, but despite their complete control of the match their passing in the final third was pretty poor.

As a result of their poor decision making in the last third of the field, clear cut chances on goal were few and far between.

South Africa did, however, create a chance as early as the sixth minute as David Mathebula fashioned some space for himself on the edge of box, but he saw his shot sail narrowly over the crossbar.

In the 22nd minute Bafana did make their dominance count as Siphiwe Tshabalala gave the home side the lead with a clinical finish from the edge of the box into the bottom left hand corner, 1-0

Four minutes later and Bernard Parker should have doubled South Africa’s lead after rising highest to meet a corner-kick, but his header was a tame one and easily saved by the keeper.

Bafana continued to dictate play and were extremely unlucky not to take a two goal lead into the break as Reneilwe Letsholonyane hit the left-hand post with a 35-yard shot in the 44th minute.

The second half continued in the same vein as Bafana applied pressure on the Burkina Faso goal from the start of the second 45.

Parker had a great chance to score South Africa’s second goal in the 58th minute when he met a right wing cross with a powerful header, but he saw his attempt well saved.

Three minutes later and a good passing movement by Bafana saw Tshabalala in space eight-yards out from goal, but he fired his shot over the crossbar under no pressure from the defence.

In the 71st minute, debutant Marc Van Heerden was bitterly unlucky not to find the back of the net as he saw his 25-yard free-kick rattle the crossbar.

Bafana did eventually manage to find their second goal as Luyolo Nomandela put the icing on the cake for South Africa with a goal in the dying seconds of the game, 2-0.

Tough Bafana decision awaits Safa

Image

Johannesburg – Another disastrous Bafana Bafana performance has brought with it the usual hullaballoo, but there’s only one match that will really define our national team’s future.

That is the World Cup qualifier against Botswana next month and should Bafana win and Ethiopia fail to beat the Central African Republic, it would mean our side are in the home straight on the road to the Brazil 2014 championship.

Sundowns sign Billiat

Image

It seems that the Khama Billiat transfer soap opera has reached its conclusion, as the Siya crew can confirm that the Zimbabwe midfielder has signed on the dotted line with Mamelodi Sundowns.

The formalities are not entirely completed though, with Ajax Cape Town having to re-sign their part of the deal following their decision to call things off – though this should just be a formality.

The news brings to an end the most drawn out transfer saga of the off-season after weeks of back-and-forth negotiations between all parties.

Boeremag application dismissed- report

Image

Johannesburg – The North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria has dismissed an application by the Boeremag accused for a special entry on the court record of an irregularity during their trial, the Citizen reported on Saturday.

Judge Eben Jordaan on Friday dismissed the application by the 20 accused, who were last year convicted of treason, but said he would only give reason for his ruling at a later stage.

The application was aimed at getting a lever to use on appeal against the their convictions on a charge of treason.

The convictions arose from a rightwing coup plot in the late 1990s and early 2000s to overthrow the African National Congress-led government.

Some of the accused claimed during their trial they were soldiers engaged in a legitimate struggle for an independent Boer republic.

Their application to be declared prisoners of war was dismissed.

After their convictions, evidence was presented which they said proved that police crime intelligence had listened in on their consultations with their legal representatives at C-Max Prison and in court holding cells.

Fans gather for Madiba spectacle

Image

Johannesburg – Fans adorning both Bafana Bafana and Springbok memorabilia gathered outside FNB Stadium on Saturday ahead of the inaugural Nelson Mandela Sport and Culture Day.

“We are here to support both of our teams,” Joe Mathebula, a supporter, said.

“I have been here since the early hours of this morning getting ready for a special day. The country needs to get behind these boys and there will be lots to shout about when the games start.”

The day’s events, in recognition of the former president’s contribution to sport in South Africa, would comprise three major matches at the stadium.

First up would be a South African ‘Legends’ soccer team taking on an Italian ‘Masters’ outfit, followed by the Bafana Bafana international friendly game against Burkina Faso.

In an unprecedented initiative, the Springboks then host Argentina, in their 2013 Rugby Championship opener, at the same venue.

Outside, scores of sports fans waited for the green light to be allowed inside the 90 000-seater stadium, which was being prepared for the first match.

Rugby supporters travelled to the venue hours before the kick-off for the Springbok clash, in an attempt to avoid mounting traffic activity.

“We will be supporting the Bafana today,” Chris Steenekamp, wearing a Springbok jersey and hat, said.

“It’s not everyday that you get two games for the price of one and I have never watched a live soccer match before. My children are very excited to be here. This is a first time for them at this big stadium.”

Traffic congestion remained a problem, with some fans citing a lack of proper signage as a major delay.

“I was a bit disappointed to be honest,” said one supporter who had travelled from Polokwane, Limpopo.

“I tried to find where I could park my car, but there were no signs to direct me. But I found a place eventually and I’m glad to be close to the stadium, away from the chaos at the parking place.”

Inside the stadium, security and ground staff were the only people allowed in. They were adding the final touches to their preparations for the day’s activities.
