De Villiers wishes Pirates luck ahead of CAF Champions League group fixture

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) CEO, Brand de Villiers has sent his best wishes to Orlando Pirates as they embark on a crucial journey to Egypt in the CAF Champions League group stages.

Orlando Pirates, the 1995 African Champions, will play African giants Al Ahly on Sunday afternoon in their bid to conquer the African continent again.

De Villiers said: “As the League, we are extremely proud of the journey that has been travelled by Orlando Pirates in reaching this phase of the CAF Champions League. The trip to Egypt will not be an easy one for them as they will face one of the most formidable clubs African football. However, I trust that they will represent the Premier Soccer League and South African football with pride and tenacity. I would like to send my best wishes to Pirates management, technical staff and the players.”

Orlando Pirates played to a goalless draw in their opening CAF Champions League encounter against Congolese side, AC Leopards at the Orlando Stadium a fortnight ago. The PSL CEO underscored the importance of South African clubs participating in continental club competitions.

“We must continue to show support to our clubs who participate within the continent as this is important for our football. The PSL prides itself for being amongst the global brands in club football. We need to transfer that success on the field. Let us all throw our support behind Orlando Pirates as our representatives in the competition,” De Villiers added.
