Madonsela “assessing” Gupta complaint

Image

Johannesburg – Public Protector Thuli Madonsela is assessing a complaint about the landing of an aircraft chartered by the Gupta family at the Waterkloof Air Force Base, her office said on Tuesday.

“The assessment of the complaint is still underway. It includes interviewing identified witnesses,” said spokesperson Oupa Segalwe.

“It is only after this assessment that the public protector will decide whether or not to launch a fully-fledged investigation into the matter.”

Of the three witnesses, two had already been interviewed, Segalwe said.

The aircraft, carrying 270 guests to a Gupta family wedding, landed at the base in April, amid widespread criticism.

A government investigation exonerated President Jacob Zuma and his ministers, and found that the landing was the result of “collusion by officials”.

ANC North West condemns attack

Image

Johannesburg – The North West ANC has described the attack of a man on his way to a National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) rally as “barbaric”.

“The African National Congress in the North West condemns with disdain the barbaric attack of Andrew Matlapeng Nkomo,” spokesperson Kenny Morolong said in a statement on Monday night.

“Nkomo was allegedly attacked by unidentified hooligans at Nkaneng informal settlement. We further refute reports that Nkomo has died. The ANC wishes him a speedy recovery.”

Morolong said Nkomo sustained serious injuries to his neck and head. He was discharged from hospital on Monday and was receiving treatment at home.

Leadership of the ANC in the province would visit Nkomo on Thursday, said Morolong. Nkomo is a member of the ANC from Segwela informal settlement.

“The ANC is making a clarion call to all affected parties to desist from any acts of provocation, violence and intimidation and to respect the Marikana Peace Accord signed on the 25 February,” said Morolong.

On Sunday, NUM was trying to recruit new members after losing its majority union status to the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union at Lonmin’s Marikana mine.

The union has referred a dispute about the interpretation and implementation of its recognition agreement with the platinum mining company to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration.

Forty-four people were killed in Marikana last August during strike-related violence at Lonmin. Police shot 34 of them on 16 August.

Ten people, including two policemen and two security guards, were killed in the preceding week.

No stone will be left unturned in land and housing stock fraud-Premier Modise

Image

The North West Provincial Government has laid criminal charges and is pursuing court cases against estate agencies and individuals that have defrauded the state and pensioners by selling land and housing stock that belonged to the North West Housing Corporation without proper authority, Premier Thandi Modise announced during the handover of a thousand title deeds to residents of Tlhabane on Monday.

Premier Modise said that the provincial government has resolved to institute civil action to set aside all illegal transfers occasioned by the illegal sales.
“The heartless people who thought they had gotten away with looting of state properties and defrauding of the aged and the poor are in for a rude shock as no stone will be left unturned. A forensic investigation into alleged irregularities in the sale of land and properties has been  extended to cover Tshwane, Gasegonayene, Tswaing, Greater Taung, Rustenburg and Mahikeng local municipalities.” The Premier assured beneficiaries.
“A title deed does not replace the fact that the land was stolen through the 1913 Native Land Act and that people experienced hardships since they were forcibly relocated from the old Bethlehem to Tlhabane in 1947 but it’s just to say that your children now have the a place they can call home, emphasised Premier Modise.
Premier Modise warned children not to fight over inheritance. “You must wake up and build our own wealth,” said Premier Modise referring to instances where children fight for houses bequeathed to them by parents.
MEC for Human Settlement, Safety and Liaison Nono Maloyi said it was important that people must have full title deeds of their houses.
“We hope people will be happy to happy that the houses they live in belong to them, they are no longer renting,” said Maloyi.
The Executive Mayor of Rustenburg, Councillor Mpho Khunou congratulated the Premier for her leadership in ensuring that the initiative that started over the past three years was successful.  Khunou said the title deeds give owners full title ownership that enables to control the property.
“The significance of Full Title Ownership of property is that the owner is now able to participate fully in property market such as getting a mortgage bond from a financial institution,” said Khunou.
Seventy year-old Elizabeth Mabe of 2404 Mafisa Street in Tlhabane said she had spent many sleepless nights over the title deed of her house ever since the death of her husband 26 years ago.
Mabe had been threatened with eviction letters. “In one instance, I received an order in the morning instructing me to vacate the house by 11 the same day,” she said.
“I will now be able to sleep peacefully knowing that I have full title deed to the house,” she said.
An elated Lydia Masefala Jonas (84) had this to say: Thanks to the ANC government for redressing our situation and restoring our dignity, I will die peaceful knowing that my children will not be evicted from their home.
”Similar events to handover title deeds to 9000 beneficiaries of the R190 million housing discount benefits scheme will take place across the province in the next few months and concluded by October this year.

North West police show love to the needy

Tlokwe-Members of the North West Province’s Detective Service visited the Sizabantu Aids Project in Ikageng, led by Colonel RC Mocwane and Lieutenant Colonel P Mocwane. The project serves people infected or affected by HIV/Aids, the disabled, as well as vulnarable people who are victims of abusive relationships.

“A slight nip in the air and whirling dust could not dampen the spirit among members of the Detective Service attached to the North West Provincial Office when they ‘did it for Madiba’ on 18 July 2013” captain Pelonomi Makau said.

Armed with an array of clothing, canned food and other groceries, fruit and vegetables, as well as other consumables, they took to Sizabantu Aids Project in Extension 7, Ikageng, on the outskirts of Potchefstroom, where they were warmly welcomed by the project co-ordinator and inhabitants, their pastor, neighbours, family and friends.

“The project is home to some 20 young children and 10 adults all infected or affected by HIV/Aids or some form of disability. At the helm is Sophy Nyenye Mathale, who started the project in 2009 without a cent to her name” Makau said.

From her humble four-roomed house she is serving her community with pride.

Makau said Mathale’s biggest dream and everything she hopes for is to extend the house in order to be able to accommodate all the children and adults in need.

“The barren foundation and half-built extensions is a constant reminder of her goal and she is not put off by the fact that she is running short of funds” she said.

Currently, some of the children and adults are accommodated with neighbours and friends at night, as she does not have sufficient space for everyone to sleep, but during the day the house is filled to capacity with over 30 mouths to feed.

“Not only is the project assisting those with HIV/Aids, vulnerable children and adults, who are victims of abusive relationships, are also welcome to knock on this Good Samaritan’s door” police said.

With no funding, they are struggling to make ends meet, and donations such as those made by the members of the Detective Service serves as an encouragement to them.

Members were so impressed by what they saw that it was decided to adopt the project in order to try and secure sponsorships for the completion of the extensions to the house, as well as for food and other requirements.

“The project will also be visited regularly to ensure the well-being of all and to assist wherever needed” police said.

The event was lead by Colonel RS Mocwane, Acting Provincial Head of the Detective Service, who was heartily supported by all the members under his command. Both Colonel Mocwane and Lieutenant Colonel Mocwane offered all present a word of encouragement and conveyed a message of hope from the National Commissioner, General Riah Phiyega, as well as the Provincial Commissioner of the North West Province, Lieutenant General MNZ Mbombo.

Illegal miners found dead

2766970652
Johannesburg – The bodies of two illegal miners were found in an old mine in Primrose near Germiston on Monday, Gauteng police said.

“It is suspected that a third body is still about 600 metres underground in an unused mine. Emergency Services have summoned the Mining Rescue Team to help with an operation to recover the third body,” said Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini.

He said the rescue operation was expected to be carried out on Tuesday.

“Two bodies were brought to the surface by other illegal miners who were taken into custody afterwards.”

On Sunday night a man claiming to have been mining illegally alleged that he and a group of miners had been attacked by unknown people.

Several shots were fired during the attack. Three of his friends were killed and he was shot and wounded in the buttocks.

“They were then robbed of their mining dust, cellphones, food, prima stoves and pots. After the attackers left, he came out of the shaft and reported the case at the police station.

“Eighteen of them, suspected to be Zimbabweans, were then arrested and will be charged with trespassing, illegal immigration and possibly illegal mining as they were found in possession of bags with mining dust,” said Dlamini. – Sapa
