Media reports suggest Knowledge Musona is on his way back to Kaizer Chiefs.

According to Gemazo, the Zimbabwean international is set to rejoin Amakhosi on a one-year loan from 1899 Hoffenheim in the German Bundesliga.

Musona spent the past season on load at FC Augsburg on loan.

According to the Zimbabwean publication, a “highly placed source” said: “The deal is finalised and everything is in black and white. Musona has agreed to the deal.”

At the beginning of June Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung told KickOff.com: “[Musona] is my baby. I would love to have him back, but unfortunately he is contracted to a German team. He is in Europe where it is high-level, but if he is available I will definitely have him back.”

However, his agent Paschalis Tountouris at ProSport International insisted his priority was staying overseas.

Sleeping woman raped in her home

crime-scene-tape
Rustenburg – A man accused of raping a 41-year-old woman in Photsaneng village has appeared in the Rustenberg Magistrate’s Court, North West police said on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old man appeared on Monday on charges of rape and pointing a firearm.

He was expected to bring a formal bail application next Monday, said Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone.

A man broke into the woman’s home while she was sleeping at 3am on Sunday, by cutting a chain on a locked door.

“He allegedly threatened the woman with a firearm and demanded money from her…. The woman refused to give the suspect money and he raped her while pointing her with a firearm,” Mokgwabone said.

He then ran away, but turned himself in hours later when he heard that the police were looking for him. – Sapa

ANCYL condemns attack on DA leader

4035771268
Cape Town – The ANC Youth League in the Western Cape on Wednesday condemned the attack on the home of a Democratic Alliance Youth leader.

League spokesman Muhammad Khalid Sayed described Saturday’s attack on Luzuko Mngqibisa’s house as “cowardly and thuggish”.

“These violent acts of intimidation are devastating to the psyche of young people in the Western Cape, particularly those residing in poor communities still affected by apartheid,” Sayed said in a statement.

He extended the league’s sympathy to Mngqibisa and his family.

“In order to contribute to a better Western Cape, our youth need to be politically active in an environment that is free from intimidation.”

Sayed dismissed allegations that the attack was part of the ANCYL’s plan to render the province ungovernable.

“There is no such campaign led by (us). The DA’s statement has the potential of fuelling unnecessary rumours and acts of intimidation.”

The Sunday Independent reported the youth activist lost all his clothing when his home in Tambo Square was set alight in an alleged politically-motivated attack. The arsonists reportedly left a note calling Mngqibisa a “dog of (DA leader) Helen Zille”.

He told the newspaper he woke to the smell of smoke early on Saturday.

“The first thing I saw was that my clothes, kept in bags near a window, were on fire. I tried to grab what I could, but the flames burnt my fingertips,” he said.

According to the newspaper, Mngqibisa ran next door to check on his parents. Once he had confirmed they were safe he called his neighbours for help. They quickly extinguished the fire.

He said a broken bottle and a piece of fabric doused in petrol were later found inside the shack. A pair of black gloves, smelling of petrol, and a handwritten note were found outside.

Police confirmed to the paper that a case of arson had been opened, which the ANCYL welcomed. – Sapa

ANC expels 14 Tlokwe councillors

1342205351
Tlokwe, North West – Fourteen ANC councillors who voted to unseat Tlokwe mayor Maphetle Maphetle were expelled from the party on Wednesday, its North West provincial disciplinary committee (PDC) said.

The African National Congress councillors were found guilty of “acting contrary to the directives” of the party and violating the ANC constitution, the PDC said in a statement.

“Expulsion of the 14 comrades… was found suitable under the given circumstances and the continuing disrespect by the comrades,” it said.

Maphetle was unseated for a second time on Tuesday.

Democratic Alliance councillor Annette Combrink was voted in as the new mayor.

DA North West leader Chris Hattingh said 29 councillors from all parties, including the ANC, had unanimously voted to return Combrink to the position of mayor.

The ANC PDC said 16 councillors faced a disciplinary hearing on Wednesday.

However, only two attended the hearing. The two, who pleaded guilty, were “reprimanded” by the PDC and it was decided that they would be provided with “guidance” by the party and would not be expelled.

The other 14, who did not arrive for the hearing, were expelled.

“Members were supposed to have known that such conduct was not authorised either by the PWC (provincial working committee) or NWC (national working committee) of the ANC.

“It is common practice and culture in the ANC that the mayoral appointments and removal thereof are exclusive domain of the higher structures (of the party) …,” the PDC said.

It said the expelled members would be removed as Tlokwe councillors.

They were allowed to appeal against their expulsions to the national disciplinary committee of appeal.

In November, ANC factions in the municipality passed a motion of no confidence in Maphetle.

He was replaced by Combrink – the first DA mayor in the province – when she defeated ANC candidate Lucky Tsagae by 20 votes to 19.

However, Maphetle was returned as mayor in February, when he won by 31 votes to Combrink’s 21.

While the DA was in charge, it asked for a forensic investigation into irregularities at the municipality.

This probe found the council had irregularly bought Maphetle a R736,000 customised Mercedes-Benz. Maphetle was also found to have allegedly abused the municipality’s disaster management fund and poverty relief fund.

The report recommended that formal disciplinary action be taken against him and other officials.

In May, the DA laid criminal charges against Maphetle. In June Public Protector Thuli Madonsela said she would investigate the claims of corruption involving Maphetle. – Sapa

The hottest place on Earth

1345696920
Death Valley, California – By 9am, the two bags of ice I loaded into the cooler are gone and the floor of my rental car looks like a bin at a recycling plant. Hydration is essential.

I know what to expect in Death Valley: unrelenting heat so bad it makes my eyes hurt, as if someone is blowing a hair dryer in my face. I don’t leave CDs or electronics in the car because they could melt or warp. I always carry bottles of water.

Corruption is big business

At the beginning of this year President Jacob Zuma fired the first salvo against construction firms engaged in collusive and anti-competitive behaviour in order to line their bank accounts at the expense of taxpayers and the economy.

The President, in his 2013 State of the Nation Address, warned: “We are cracking down on corruption, tender fraud and price fixing in the infrastructure programme.”

Mentorship can save our lost kids

3411008207
During the course of the past month – Youth Month – we have heard a great deal about our children and how lost they are; young girls with sugar daddies; boys in gangs stealing, raping and taking drugs; kids spending school hours drinking on the streets. We have heard about how the system has failed this generation and how nothing awaits them except a lifelong cycle of unemployment, crime, unwanted pregnancies, addictions and jail.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

Applicant’s death a mystery – testimony

1869263282
Pietermaritzburg – Many questions remain about the death of a man found with his throat slit during a KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Fitness Test, a commission of inquiry heard on Wednesday.

Minenhle Mazwi Mbandlwa said he did not believe suggestions that his cousin Sanele Ngcobo committed suicide.

A doctor had told him it would have been impossible for Ngcobo to inflict such a deep incision on himself, Mbandlwa told the commission in Pietermaritzburg.

Ngcobo was found with a 13cm cut across his neck during the fitness test.

Mbandlwa asked the commission to investigate affidavits, in the possession of the transport department, that someone saw his cousin break a bottle.

The commission should also look into the person who claimed to have heard people screaming that someone was cutting himself, Mbandlwa said.

“What I seek clarity on, is the person alleged to have heard screams the same person who saw him breaking the bottle?” he asked.

“If he was identified by his T-shirt, where did his T-shirt disappear to?

“If that was the situation, did anyone bother to report this to the police?”

The commission was appointed by KwaZulu-Natal Premier Zweli Mkhize earlier this year to probe the deaths of eight people who took part in a 4km run at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg in December.

This formed part of a fitness test for Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) job applicants.

Nomusa Khuzwayo, for the families, raised questions about the whereabouts of the sharp object used during Ngcobo’s death.

Mbandlwa said he expected that this object would have been found.

“Would you agree that whoever kept the instrument would be the person who used it?” Khuzwayo asked.

Mbandlwa agreed with her.

He also asked the commission to allow people who worked at Alexander pools, near the stadium, to give evidence.

The commission said it would investigate Mbandlwa’s concerns.

The inquiry continues on Thursday.

Law not on Mandla’s side – expert

9df48e96e80f47d0930b197f1383274d
Johannesburg – Customary and common law favours the greater Mandela family in their legal battle with Mandla Mandela, a constitutional law expert said on Wednesday.

University of SA African renaissance Professor Shadrack Gutto said customary law demanded that Nelson Mandela’s grandson Mandla, who is also the chief of Mvezo in the Eastern Cape, follow due process before exhuming remains.

He did not follow the correct approach when moving the graves from Qunu to Mvezo in 2011.

“Mandla Mandela is the chief of Mvezo and not of Qunu,” Gutto said.

“Therefore, if he did not go through the process of consulting the chief in Qunu before exhuming those bodies in another chieftainship… that was wrong in customary law.”

The fact that the critically ill Mandela had reportedly already voiced his preference to be buried alongside his children in Qunu was another factor that counted against the Mvezo chief.

“The wishes of Tata Nelson Mandela ought to prevail in these circumstances and [the] actions taken by Mandla undermine that,” Gutto said.

Mandla also transgressed common law in disturbing the graves in Qunu.

“Graveyards are protected under law and, therefore, if you go and exhume the bodies without having the proper permission to do so, that application should have been taken, for legal reasons, to court. He did not do that and that is again a problem,” Gutto said.

The Eastern Cape High Court ruled against Mandla on Wednesday, after he tried to have a court order compelling him to return the remains to Qunu overturned.

The chief then launched another application to rescind the court order, which had yet to be heard.

His spokesperson said Mandla would hold a news briefing on the matter on Thursday to respond to “allegations and dirt thrown in his direction”.
