Bafana thumps Lesotho in friendly

Image

international Friendly

Result: Lesotho 0-2 Bafana

Date: 2 June 2013

Venue: Setsoto Stadium

Tlou Segolela struck in each half to hand Bafana Bafana a comfortable 2-0 win over Lesotho in an international friendly match on Sunday.

The South Africans started the game on the front foot but they took some time to settle on the artificial pitch and adjust to the windy conditions.

The visitors had the first chance of the game when Bernard Parker met a cross at the far post but he couldn’t get enough power on his effort as the goalkeeper made a simple save just 10 minutes in.

Katlego Mashego went close a minute later when he was played in behind the defence but he scuffed his shot narrowly wide of the post.

With the wind pushing Bafana forward, Oupa Manyisa went for a long-range strike and it dipped just over the crossbar.

Chances then dried up slightly as Lesotho put in some crunching tackles, and were lucky to escape red cards on a few occasions.

Eric Mathoho just missed out on getting the right kind of contact onto a ball in from a corner as it bounced wide on the half-hour mark.

Bernard Parker was then unlucky to see his free-kick bounce off the underside of the crossbar two minutes later. The ball bounced back off the line and Mashego’s follow-up header was brilliantly kept out by Kholuoe Phasumane.

Lesotho finally came to life in the dying minutes of the half and saw Thulo Ranchobe force Wayne Sandilands into his first save in the 39th minute before the Sundowns stopper had to keep out a header from the same player soon after. Ranchobe had one more chance with a long-range strike that sailed just over.

The game looked destined to head into the break locked at 0-0 but Segolela popped up in the dying seconds to tap in a cross from Siphiwe Tshabalala to give them the lead, though there seemed to be a hint of offside in the goal.

As coach Gordon Igesund had revealed before the game, changes would be made at the break with Daine Klate, Tefu Mashamaite and Senzo Meyiwa coming on, while Tebogo Langerman replaced Ricardo Nunes later on.

Bafana continued to dictate possession and Segolela would double their tally with a brilliant strike into the bottom corner after the goalkeeper failed to hold onto a cross from Klate.

Parker should have made it 3-0 in the 67th minute but his dinked effort over the goalkeeper was slowed by the wind and Lesotho cleared.

The hosts looked to try and produce a strong finish and Katleho Moleko let rip with a stunning strike from outside the area which rattled the crossbar.

South Africa were then given another warning when Nkau Lerotholi smashed his strike against the post with Meyiwa beaten and the follow-up was blocked.

Chances were slow in coming in the final few minutes as the game became bogged down in midfield. Parker was released deep into stoppage time but his touch around the goalkeeper was too heavy and it sailed out of play.

Bafana will now turn their attention to crunch 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Central African Republic (CAR) and Ethiopia.

The South African Senior Women’s national team (Banyana Banyana) will take on Zimbabwe in the second international friendly match to be played on Saturday, 15 June 2013 at the Sinaba Stadium in Daveyton.

The 24 locally-based players called up for the Banyana Banyana camp have all undergone the fitness and assessment tests that took place at the Wits training grounds in Johannesburg on Friday, 31 May.

Mkhonza has described the mood in camp as inspirational and believes that he will be able to select a strong squad for the upcoming friendly matches.

“This camp has started off on a good footing.  The atmosphere is electric, there is healthy competition between them and the new players are fitting in well as the regular players are welcoming the new ones to the national team set-up,” said Mkhonza.

Mkhonza believes that after the fitness tests and training sessions on Friday and Saturday, players called up for the national team will know what is expected from them when they get to camp.  The coach has also noticed an improvement in the fitness levels of many of the players and he contributes this to the growing competition in the Sasol League.

“This also means that clubs in the Sasol League are doing a great job in developing these players and ensuring that players are well conditioned by the time they get to the national team camps as these are the players we will look at to make a contribution to the national team. We would also like to form strong communication channels with these coaches through the upcoming Sasol League road shows for the growth and progression of our national team,” said Mkhonza.

After the training session on Sunday, the coach will select 21 players who will travel to Nelspruit for the feature against Mozambique on Sunday, 9 June..

After the Mozambique game, Mkhonza will further reduce the squad to 18 players ahead of the second friendly against Zimbabwe.

Meyer: I support the youngsters

Image

Cape Town – Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer says he is happy with his new squad and confident the youngsters will step up to the plate.

Bulls centre Jan Serfontein is one of nine uncapped players in a much-changed Springbok squad for the four nations tournament against Italy, Scotland and Samoa starting next week.

The 20-year-old captained South Africa to the IRB Junior World Championship last year and, along with another inclusion from that side, loose-forward Pieter-Steph du Toit of the Sharks, is viewed as one of the bright young things of South African rugby.

“It’s good to see Jan and Pieter-Steph make the step up from the junior levels. I’ve always rated them and they’ve shone this year for the Bulls and Sharks,” Meyer told a press conference on Saturday night.

Among the other uncapped players, four have not been part of the national set-up before. They are the Cheetahs quartet of front-rowers Lourens Adriaanse and Trevor Nyakane, flank Lappies Labuschagne and winger Willie le Roux.

The other three remaining uncapped players are Stormers flanker Siya Kolisi and the Bulls pair of loose-forward Arno Botha and scrumhalf Jano Vermaak.

Meyer has also selected overseas-based scrumhalf Ruan Pienaar from Ulster and Bath flanker Francois Louw, but maintains he prefers to pick players plying their trade in South Africa.

“I have always said I want to pick the guys in South Africa first. Ruan and Francois are the only overseas we have considered for the moment,” Meyer said.

“If there are injuries then we might have to look at more guys overseas and there are some quality guys there.

“I am very happy with this squad, there are a lot of youngsters coming through and you have to back them and the other guys playing in South Africa.”

The Springboks open their Incoming Series against Italy in Durban next Saturday, before a meeting with Scotland in Nelspruit on June 15.

There will be a final round of matches in Pretoria on June 22, with the fixtures to be determined by results on the opening two weekends.

Oscar gets support from unlikely source

Image

Johannesburg – Convicted drug trafficker Glen Agliotti has warned Oscar Pistorius and his legal team to prepare for what he told eNCA would be a very ugly trial.

The Blade Runner, accused of murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine’s Day, is set to return to court 4 June.

He is currently out on bail of R1m.

Agliotti faced prosecution from the same team who are now trying Pistorius.

“I believe they will do anything and everything within their power to try and take Pistorius down, because it’s a feather in their cap, it’s an endorsement behind their names,” Agliotti told eNCA.

“South Africans don’t forgive and they don’t forget, so unfortunately for me and for Oscar, you’re almost dead in the water in South Africa because there will always be a stigma attached to you,” he added.

When asked for their comment, NPA spokesperon Medupe Simasiku told the TV news channel: “We will make sure that every case is proved beyond reasonable doubt so that when it comes out on the other side, everything is fair and justice is served.”

Meanwhile, Reuters reported on Saturday that Pistorius’s lawyers have demanded answers from the police and prosecutors after pictures of the bathroom and toilet where Steenkamp was shot, were leaked to Sky News.

Earlier, in an exclusive interview with CNN, Pistorius’s uncle Arnold said Oscar had grown a beard, because he did not want to be recognised and had surrounded himself with photos of Steenkamp.

“He’s got photos in his room, photos all over the place. He’s housebound, you know. He doesn’t go out in public places.”
