When comes to sex, both men and women lie

Image

A new study finds that when talking about sex, both men and women bend the truth to meet conventional gender norms.

Ohio State University researchers enlisted nearly 300 university students to complete a questionnaire that asked how often they engaged in 124 different behaviors. Some of the students were connected to a polygraph machine but while the subjects weren’t aware of this, the machine wasn’t actually working.

For nonsexual behaviors, subjects didn’t feel pressured to alter their responses to conform to gender roles. Women attached to the fake polygraph machine were just as likely to admit that, say, they made obscene jokes or lifted weights, as much as women who weren’t connected to a lie detector. Men equally admitted that they wrote poetry or sang in the shower, or some other stereotypical female behavior, the researchers said.

But this changed when questions about sex came up.

“There is something unique about sexuality that led people to care more about matching the stereotypes for their gender,” researcher and psychology professor Terri Fisher said in a statement.

When hooked up to the fake lie detector, men reported fewer sexual partners, while women reported more, the team found.

Fisher’s research follows her previous work from 2003, which found that when study participants were hooked up to a lie detector, both men and women reported about the same number of sexual partners.

“Men and women had different answers about their sexual behavior when they thought they had to be truthful,” Fisher added. “Sexuality seemed to be the one area where people felt some concern if they didn’t meet the stereotypes of a typical man or a typical woman.”

A toddler run over by bakkie, survives

Image

Johannesburg – A 2-year-old girl has miraculously survived being hit by a double cab bakkie that drove over her and came to a stop with its back wheels on top of her body.

Ronewa Mavhungu was rushed to hospital but was discharged the following day, reported Beeld.

She sustained only scratches and cuts to her face and legs.

The accident happened at an Audi car dealership in Middelburg on Tuesday.

Apparently many motorists who want to avoid a traffic light drive through the car dealership’s parking lot.

A salesman at the car dealership said the little girl and her father had stopped at the dealership to look at a vehicle.

“Simon [the girl’s father] walked outside to his car with the little girl to call his wife in the parking lot,” said Wimpie Pieterse.

Mavhungu put down his daughter so that she could walk herself.

“A red double cab bakkie with a young man and a woman drove through the parking lot to avoid the traffic light and it hit the girl,” said Pieterse.

“I shouted: ‘Stop!’ The bakkie stopped, but on top of the child. I then shouted for it to reverse,” said colleague Thabang Skonde.

No charges were laid with police.

Photographer shot by Red Ants

Image

Johannesburg – A photographer for The Star was injured when a Red Ants security guard fired a rubber bullet in his direction, the newspaper reported on Thursday.

Motshwari Mofokeng fell to the ground after being struck below the right shoulder in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

He and other reporters from The Star were covering an eviction of illegal residents living in a building once used as a factory on Hardy Street.

Editor Makhudu Sefara condemned the incident.

“The Star will exhaust every possible avenue to ensure that the man who shot Motshwari faces the full brunt of the law,” he said.

“Too many photographers have been beaten and even shot in the line of duty recently. Yesterday [Wednesday] they picked the wrong newspaper. We intend making an example here and now, before one of our colleagues is killed.”

The newspaper’s lawyers helped Mofokeng open a criminal case.

SA Gun Owners Association spokesperson Martin Hood, said rubber bullets were a non-lethal alternative to live ammunition.

Krugersdorp firearms trainer Andre Pretorius, of the Professional Firearm Trainer’s Council, said rubber bullets could cause death.

He said although rubber bullets – including the lighter ammunition fired from shotguns – were described as non-lethal, the more accurate description was “less lethal”, as they could cause serious injury or even death if used at close range.

Breytenbach affair suggestions denied

Image

Johannesburg – Imperial Crown Trading (ICT) lawyer Ronnie Mendelow denies he and his legal team suggested advocate Mike Hellens had an affair with National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) prosecutor Glynnis Breytenbach, The Star reported on Thursday.

Mendelow denied on Wednesday the suggestion was made after Hellens had said Mendelow lodged a complaint against him to the NPA because he had an unusually close relationship with Breytenbach, the newspaper reported.

Mendelow said his complaint made no insinuation whatsoever regarding a sexual or love relationship between Breytenbach and Hellens.

“Advocate Hellens knows this very well indeed, and one can only wonder at his motive for misstating that there was any such suggestion,” he said.

The complaint was that Breytenbach failed to maintain objectivity over the course of an investigation against ICT.

On Monday, Breytenbach was found not guilty on 15 counts by a disciplinary hearing which sat at the NPA’s head office in Pretoria.

Breytenbach was also found not guilty on any of the alternative charges, after being suspended from the NPA on 30 April 2012.

Wife killer: I am innocent

Image

Johannesburg – A Pretoria geologist, who hired his gardener to murder his ex-wife, was denied bail on Wednesday while awaiting the outcome of his appeal against his conviction.

Cobus Prinsloo, 66, made the bail application after North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria Judge Moses Mavundla jailed him for in effect 25 years for the contract killing of his ex-wife, air hostess Cordelia Prinsloo.

He was also convicted of stealing her firearm, and illegal possession of the firearm and ammunition.

His application for leave to appeal will be heard on Thursday.

Lucas Moloi was sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment in 2011, after he admitted to killing Cordelia Prinsloo with a spade in October 2009.

He told the court her husband had offered him R50 000 and a house to commit the murder.

Asked why it would be in the interest of justice to release him on bail, Prinsloo answered: “Because I am innocent”.

‘Innocent’

He said he regarded South Africa as his heartland, had no plans to leave the country, and wanted to follow all possible channels to prove his innocence.

“Even with a sentence of 25 years hanging over my head, in my heart I’m still innocent and that will always keep me here.

“My innocence lies here in South Africa.

He said he needed to look after his two adult children “to stabilise and keep [them] on the right road”.

“I must, and want to, get on with life out of fairness to myself and those around me,” Prinsloo said.

Throughout his trial, Prinsloo insisted he had nothing to do with his ex-wife’s murder.

He dismissed a suggestion that he could continue with his life in prison.

“To me, imprisonment is not a life. It’s an existence,” he said.

Prinsloo also wanted the court to let him keep his passport, because he wanted to continue working overseas as a geologist, even if he was sick.

He was previously diagnosed with lymphoma, a form of blood cancer, but is now in remission.

“Cancer does not ask when it can knock at your door again. As I am standing here I’m definitely not feeling healthy,” he said.

Sentencing

Earlier, while handing down the sentence, Mavundla said it seemed Prinsloo had murdered his ex-wife after major conflict over property.

“He then decided to get the deceased killed. Like a coward, he asked Moloi to do the dirty work for him…

“She was ‘chopped like a rabbit’ at his instructions. He was motivated by greed and bitterness towards the deceased,” Mavundla said.

He said Prinsloo was a wealthy businessman, and had enough money to provide for his children.

“He knew he carried the future of his children on his shoulders when he decided to arrange for the termination [her life]…. The accused chose to walk the evil path and contracted the killing of their mother.”

Mavundla said Prinsloo needed to “take his medicine with a smile” and could not use the interests of his children as an excuse to stay out of jail.

SA kidnapped pair still missing-5 held

Image

Sana’a – Five suspects were arrested in connection with the abduction of two South Africans in the Yemeni city of Taiz, a government spokesperson said on Wednesday.

The whereabouts of the pair, who were kidnapped in front of their hotel on Monday, are still unknown.

The two, a man and a woman, were believed to have been involved in the development of the hotel, in the town.

Meanwhile, AP reported that the Yemeni lawmaker, who authorities have accused of orchestrating the kidnapping to pressure authorities to give him a disputed piece of land, has denied involvement in the incident.

Abdel-Hamid el-Batra on Wednesday described accusation as “baseless” and said authorities were trying to cover up their failures in protecting foreigners.

Abductions are not rare in Yemen, but Monday’s kidnapping of foreigners was unusual in its circumstances and was the first in Taiz, near the southwestern tip of the Arabian Peninsula.

Police said they received a call from associates of el-Batra saying he organised the kidnapping, pledging to hand over the foreigners in exchange for the land.

Earlier, Sapa, reported that a meeting seeking to secure the safe release of the South Africans was to have taken place, according to the international relations department.

“We will receive a report of that meeting as soon as it [the meeting] is concluded,  spokesperson Nelson Kgwete said.

South Africa’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Sadiq Jaffer, flew to Yemen on Tuesday night.

The Saudi Arabian embassy is accredited to Yemen.

The department could not divulge more information about the couple.

“We notified the families of the couple and they asked that we do not disclose information about their relatives to the media.”

Mkhonza announces 24-player squad

Image

Banyana Banyana head coach, Joseph Mkhonza announced a squad of 24 players that will assemble in Johannesburg for a four-day fitness and assessment camp.

The Sasol-sponsored team last played a competitive match at the Cyprus Women’s Cup in March and this camp will give the coach and his technical team an opportunity to assess players’ developments and fitness.

The squad, which is made up of locally based players, will assemble from 30 May – 2 June and this will be the first time the coach has had an opportunity to have the squad together since the team returned from Cyprus.

This camp forms part of Mkhonza’s plan to track the players’ development ahead of the international competitions that the team will be participating in later in the year. It will also form part of preparations for the Women’s COSAFA Cup which is scheduled to take place in Namibia in December this year.

“It is essential that we monitor and evaluate the players regularly especially during the quiet period for the national team. This also gives us the opportunity to look at players that are doing well in the Sasol League so that we can build a strong squad for future tournaments. This is very important for the development of the team,” said Mkhonza.

Banyana Banyana are expected to depart for Nelspruit on Monday, 3 June 2013, once the coach has cut the squad down to 21 players. The team is set to play an international friendly against neighbours Mozambique at Kanyamazane Stadium on Sunday, 9 June 2013.

Mkhonza said that the team needed to consistently work at improving their performance and that having regular camps and matches was one way of achieving this objective.

“None of our girls that are playing in the overseas leagues are available for this camp. This will give me the opportunity to grow the squad for the future,” he said.
