Fifty seven regional Sexual Offences Court will start operating next month. This was announced by Justice Minister Jeff Radebe in parliament today. The announcement comes as South Africa observes child protection week and amid rising cases of woman and child abuse.
With a R16.7 billion budget, Justice Minister Jeff Radebe can now prioritise the much vaunted Sexual Offences courts. “We have adopted a zero-tolerance stance towards rape, violation of the rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and other forms of violence targeted against our mothers and daughters,” says Minister Radebe.
Six new courts will be built in the next 3 years for previously unserviced areas.
Meanwhile, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) came in for some criticism. “You have police caught on camera murdering Andries Tatane. They are clearly identified, a crime is obviously committed in our eyes but then we are told that the prosecution could not make their case. The recent release of Arthur Brown, with a slap on the wrist is another case in point,” says United Christian Democratic Party (UCDP) MP, Isaac Mfundisi.
“For all the right reasons the National Prosecuting Authority should be held accountable for the fact that South Africans are taking the law into their own hands. The actions of the NPA in this Breytenbach matter is once again simply confirming that all is not well in this unit,” says Congress of the People (COPE) MP, Luzelle Adams.
In an earlier media briefing, Radebe defended the NPA saying these were isolated cases, compared to its overall conviction rate.
