3023706779
According to The Star, Zenani and Makaziwe Mandela intend fighting an April 2004 Johannesburg High Court order which gave Mandela the right to instruct Ismail Ayob, his then lawyer, to stop managing his financial, personal and legal affairs.

The court order barred Ayob from selling any of Mandela’s artworks.

The Star reported that Mandela’s current lawyer, Bally Chuene, filed an affidavit last week in response to a lawsuit brought by the sisters, who are represented by Ayob.

Last month the sisters filed papers asking for Chuene, George Bizos SC and Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale to remove themselves as directors and trustees of the Mandela Trust and as directors of Harmonieux and Magnifique (Pty) Ltd with immediate effect.

In his replying affidavit, Chuene reportedly said he, Bizos and Sexwale had, in 2011, refused to release the trust’s money to the daughters without a legal justification.

Chiefs will take part in Africa- Motaung

Image

Kaizer Motaung has confirmed that Kaizer Chiefs will play in the CAF Champions League next season contrary to recent reports.

Chincha Guluva was speaking after Chiefs were handed their PSL trophy on Saturday at Mbombela Stadium.

Motaung says: “It is just speculation (that Chiefs won’t play in Africa) and I don’t know where it stems from.

“Playing in Africa is about representing your country and it is something we cannot shy away from. We are committed to that,” he says.

Motaung, though, clearly has reservations about the way the Confederation of African Football is running the club competitions.

“It is costly to get involved in the Champions League. You are well aware that there was no sponsorship for this competition at the time, in 1993, when we first got involved and the South African teams took a stand to say we won’t play until something happens.

“Now it is sponsored, even though it is not adequate and that’s why as the PSL, we give the clubs that participate there R1 million especially for the first part of the campaign, but we are not fortunate like other countries. In other countries, their governments pay for them but because we are a big League in Africa, obviously we must compete.

“As for other things, CAF need to improve in a lot of areas. You saw what happened to Pirates,” Motaung adds.

Guptas apologise for “misjudgements”

Image

Johannesburg – The Gupta family has apologised for the controversy surrounding the landing of a chartered plane at Waterkloof Air Force Base, saying it had only wanted to hold a memorable wedding, but realised that some bad decisions could have been made in the process.

“…perhaps some misjudgements may have been made,” family spokesperson Gary Naidoo said on Sunday.

He said an interim report shed some light on the matter and the family would wait for the release of the full report.

The full ministers’ report is expected to be made public during the course of next week.

“We wish to once again re-iterate our apology for any embarrassment or inconvenience caused by the landing of the aircraft,” said Naidoo.

Investigation

A plane chartered by the Gupta family, carrying 270 wedding guests, landed at the base last month.

Guests were attending the wedding of Vega Gupta, 23, and Indian-born Aakash Jahajgarhia at Sun City.

The landing sparked widespread criticism. Several government ministers initiated an investigation into a possible breach of diplomatic protocol.

On Sunday, Justice Minister Jeff Radebe said President Jacob Zuma and his Cabinet had no involvement in the landing. Radebe said one of the findings of the investigation was that the landing was a direct result of manipulation of processes. He said names had been “dropped” during the course of the probe including that of Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, Transport Minister Ben Martins and Zuma.

He said the aircraft was cleared for landing and the correct clearance procedures were followed. But this was based on false information and abuse of privileges, by a group who acted in common purpose. The investigation found that the wealthy Gupta family had resorted to using diplomatic channels when it failed to get landing rights from ministers and the Airports Company SA.

Political reaction

The Democratic Alliance said on Sunday that it came as no surprise that Zuma and his Cabinet were exonerated from the landing saga.

“From the start, the investigation into the landing…was a carefully crafted damage control exercise designed to protect…Zuma and members of his Cabinet from the political fallout,” said DA MP David Maynier.

“The scope of the investigation must include the role played by President Zuma and members of his Cabinet.”

He said an independent investigation into the controversial plane landing was needed by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela.

Freedom Front Plus spokesperson Pieter Groenewald demanded that decisive action be taken. He said Radebe’s statement that false information and abuse of privileges led to the landing amounted to fraud.

“The guilty should be named and prosecuted. The fact that false information led to the correct landing procedures being followed creates a serious void in the process which has to be followed to allow airplanes to land,” he said.

“It does not matter whether Waterkloof is a national key point or not; the fact is that Waterkloof is a military air force base and is therefore a security area and a serious security breach took place.”

Radebe said earlier the base was not a national key point.

Johannesburg – President Jacob Zuma, political parties and the broadcasting community on Sunday paid tribute to SABC television and radio presenter Vuyo Mbuli.

The SABC reported that Mbuli, 46, collapsed while watching a rugby match between the Cheetahs and the Reds at the Free State Stadium on Saturday night.

He was treated at the scene before being rushed to the Mediclinic hospital in Bloemfontein, where he later died.

Zuma praised Mbuli’s contribution and said his death was a loss to the nation.

“It is hard to think of a more patriotic and positive person than Vuyo,” Zuma said in a statement.

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, who was in London, paid tribute to Mbuli as a “constantly reassuring presence on our television screens over two tumultuous decades”.

“With gentle and genteel style, perfectly suited to morning television and radio, his was for many people the first and most trusted analysis of the daily news,” Tutu said in a statement.

South African Football Association president Kirsten Nematandani said in a statement that it was difficult to express the loss South Africans felt at Mbuli’s death.

“He was a great fan and admirer of our national football team. We pray for his family to remain strong as they mourn his passing.”

Former 2010 Fifa World Cup local organising committee chief executive Danny Jordaan said he was shocked by Mbuli’s sudden death.

“As a veteran journalist and commentator, Mr Mbuli was always committed to creating a platform for discussion and debate on difficult human rights issues facing our country.”

Earlier, Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane said: “We have lost a patriot; a true believer in the ideals of South Africa; his wit and smile will forever be missed from our television screens.”

Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille extended the City’s condolences to Mbuli’s family, friends and colleagues.

“His warm, thoughtful and engaging style of conducting interviews made every interview with him a pleasurable encounter.”

“Government expresses its deepest condolences to his family, friends and the media industry. Vuyo has touched the hearts of South Africans through his work.”

The SABC expressed its shock and “great sadness” at Mbuli’s death.

Spokesman Kaizer Kganyago said in a statement that Mbuli, who was a Morning Live and SAFM presenter, had shown dedication and loyalty to his job, as well as the South African public, through his work.

“He was one of the first presenters on Morning Live, when it began to broadcast in November 1999 and he had maintained his position until his untimely death.

“This speaks volumes of the love that the public had for him, and the great talent and skill he possessed through his presenting and knowledge base.”

On Sunday, condolences poured in from parties across the political spectrum, including the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania, the Young Communist League of South Africa, the ANC Youth League in Limpopo and the Democratic Alliance.

DA spokesman Mmusi Maimane said: “He personified what it meant to be a warm, engaging and tolerant South African.”

Congress of the People spokesman Dennis Bloem described Mbuli as “a zealous newshound who stood for the truth in public interest and remained fiercely objective at all times”.

Azanian People’s Organisation spokesman Funani ka Ntontela praised Mbuli’s multilingualism, saying this skill gave him the ability to make a broad spectrum of guests on his talk shows feel at ease.

ANC spokesman Jackson Mthembu described Mbuli as “an outspoken linguist who took pride in celebrating the diversity of South Africa and its people”.

“For decades, Vuyo Mbuli has been a constant presence in South African homes, tackling various issues of national importance with wit, charm, respect and an all-embracing and inclusive manner.”

The ANC also praised Mbuli’s tireless efforts in promoting dialogue on various issues of relevance to South Africa’s national discourse.

“In this, the last time, his signature sign off – ‘sharp sharp’ – came too soon and he will be sadly missed,” Mthembu said.

The Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA) described Mbuli as a lively and intuitive presenter with exceptional qualities.

“He was prone to using phrases such as ‘Goeie Genade’, ‘Eita daar’ and more famously his brand mark was ‘sharp sharp’,

“It is these small things that make such men unforgettable,” it said in a statement.

The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union said Mbuli made all South Africans feel welcome in their country.

“He greeted us in all 11 African languages… his presentations, peppered with South African lingo, made many of us feel at home,” said Sadtu’s general secretary Mugwena Maluleke.

A family spokesperson told the SABC that the cause of death had not yet been determined.

The spokesperson requested that the family’s privacy be respected as they tried to come to terms with Mbuli’s death. – Sapa
