Eleven people perish on North West roads in Easter

Eleven people have died on North West roads since the beginning of easter, the North West Department of Human Settlements, Public Safety said on Sunday.

 

In the latest accident, two pedestrians were hit by a car in Muilskraal outside Klersdorp, said department spokesman Simon Lesolang Mmope.

 

“According to police the two were walking in the middle of the road in the darkness, when the unfortunate accident happened.”

 

The man and woman were allegedly walking with two children.

 

The children escaped unharmed.

 

Earlier today a man was reported dead after his car went off the road and crashed into two trees.

 

He had lost control of the car at a sharp bend on Vermaars drift road, Klerksdorp.

 

On Saturday police had reported that eight people had died since the start of the Easter weekend.

 

One man died when he crashed into a bridge on the N4 near Majakaneng on Friday morning, said Mmope.

 

Three people, a driver and two women, died when a minibus taxi and a Volkswagen Golf collided on the R501 between Potchefstroom and Carletonville.

 

Another three people died in an accident on Nelson Mandela drive in Potchefstroom when two cars collided, said Mmope.

 

“According to reports the two vehicles caught fire after the collision.”

 

A cyclist also died when he was knocked over by a car on the Koster-Swartruggens Road on Friday. – Sapa
