Image

By Obakeng Maje

Radio Presenters are the voice of a station or programme, whether they work in speech-based or music Radio.

They are responsible for creating the tone and style of Radio output and establishing a relationship with listeners.

Our crew are talking to one of prime presenters in entertainment industry.

Mafikeng Fm’s Lesego “Masterpiece” Molamu need no introduction,so sit back and relax while Lesco Events owner pulls no strings!!!

Born and bred in the dusty streets of Itsoseng township, like any other kids Lesego had a dream that one day he will make it big.

Molamu always wanted to become a radio presenter.

“It was my longing dream to become a radio presenter one day. I was inspired by many of top radio presenters across the country and slowly trickle with self-confidence I started to take it into reality” Molamu said.

It was not very easy for Lesego to embark on his dream as he had to convince his mom to follow his dream.

Even though it was not easy for his mom to accept it,she gave him that “benefit of doubt” and agrees to Lesego’s plea.

“It was not that easy to convince my mom to be a Radio Presenter as she wanted me to have a proper career. She wanted me to be a nurse and I wanted to be where I am now” he smiles.

“It is not that easy to be a radio presenter as creativity is the order of the day. As a presenter you must always be on point as your listeners might be bored by your one way strategy, so you need to be careful and keep them captivated” Molamu said.

Presenters may also be required to carry out a range of other production tasks, as well as deliver content for related websites or other mobile platforms.

Radio Presenters’ specific responsibilities differ considerably depending on the programme or station.

Molamu present a show called “Y Cruz Air Ways with Jam” at Mafikeng Community Radio Station based in Mahikeng.

Itsoseng-born Dj is armed with Media Studies & Journalism from Boston Media House.

“I studied Media at Boston College and I am very grateful as now I know the ins and outs of radio. I also like to advice the youths of SA to up their game and furnish themselves with education” Masterpiece said.

The majority of Radio Presenters are part of a small team, although some work with much larger programme units.

They are mainly based in offices and recording studios, but may also work on location presenting outside broadcasts.

A 26 year old presenter joined Mafikeng Fm last year as a producer and now a presenter.

Lesego Molamu is also runs a Lesco Events and catering for the youths of Mahikeng and its surroundings.

He helps them to reach their dreams and instill that “never give up” attitude.

“We help a lot of people especially previously disadvantage and make sure we all get coducive life because we all equal” Molamu said.

What Lesego’s take on Unemployment?

Unemployment has been rife in our country especially amongst the youths. Molamu explains what he thinks and advice the youths not to lose hope.

“With regards to unemployment, one should stand up on his/her feet to do anything one would want to do, so do not wait for anyone to make it possible. To every youth out there, stand your ground and be counted” Molamu said emotionally. Alcohol and Substance abuse amongst the youths? It all goes to peer presure at some point said sassy presenter.

“Sometimes trying to please other people not knowing that you killing your own future in the long run” he said.

“As a young person from whatever background,do not let fear stand on your way. Dream big, take your chance, trust yourself and get your education. All this will give you the reality you wishing for today” he advised.

What is your job as presenter?

Presenters in music Radio work for a range of stations and programmes, catering for all musical tastes.

Presenters in speech Radio work in all genres, from topical talk shows to documentaries, light entertainment and comedy.  “Working hours can vary enormously and may involve early mornings, late nights and overnights, as well as working weekends or holidays” Molamu said.

“My plans for the next 5 years is to see my self working for SABC”.

“My road to get in radio, was not easy. I applied like any other person and followed the standard procedure” Lesego said.

In some roles Presenters are expected to travel to work on location, both within the country and abroad.

“Wherever they work, Presenters are expected to understand the purpose and format of their station or programme; to be aware of the characteristics of their target audience; and to be knowledgeable about the subject matter of the output they present” he asserted.

Radio Presenters may present live or recorded shows, scripted and unscripted.

They can be required to generate original ideas; carry out research; write scripts and links; work from a brief supplied by other members of a production team; conduct interviews with contributors in a studio or over the phone; handle debates or phone-ins; and host live events.

They may also be required to carry out a range of other production tasks, as well as deliver content for related websites or other mobile platforms.

They must work within production requirements and observe the disciplines of the production process, particularly those regarding timings.

They are expected to understand and comply with media law, regulation and industry codes.

They work closely with other members of a production team and may be expected to take direction from a Producer or Editor.

Radio Presenters are expected to review their own output and to seek and accept feedback on their performance.

They are also expected to monitor listener feedback, and contribute to responses to comments, or programme complaints

Radio Presenters should be able to operate various radio studios, and to record audio both in studios and on location.

They may be also be required to edit audio material – using suitable computer editing software.

Some Radio Presenters may be required to write material for websites, blogs or other platforms, and to prepare visual images and video footage, as well as audio material, for online use.

Typical Career Routes

Traditionally Radio Presenters acquire hands-on experience of presenting by working in community radio, student or hospital radio, or discos, in some cases while taking an undergraduate degree or a post-graduate Diploma or MA in Radio or Media Production.

Some may benefit from talent development schemes run by some larger broadcasters to identify potential presenters.

Others work their way up from entry level roles in Radio secured with or without a degree or other qualifications.

However, Radio Presenters may also be recruited for their specialist knowledge or celebrity profile – acquired from working on newspapers and magazines, or in the music business for example. Others make the move to Radio from presentation roles in TV.

Once in post, career progression for Radio Presenters often involves moving to a larger station, to a programme with a wider audience, or from a local to a regional or national service.

Radio Presenters also move into TV, or combine working in both media.  Some may choose to move into Programme Production or into Radio Management roles.

See the Radio Reporter job profile for information about the career route for Presenters in News and Sport.

Essential Knowledge & Skills

Radio Presenters need the following:

excellent presentation and performance skills

ability to generate original ideas, and to think creatively about how to communicate them

an understanding of how to use the voice effectively for radio

ability to build credibility and rapport by communicating knowledgably and engagingly with audiences

determination and tenacity

excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to draw information from people

knowledge of the Radio market, different station and programme styles, and audience demographics

a comprehensive knowledge of subjects relevant to the Radio genre in which they wish to work

ability to work independently but also as part of a team

self-motivation and adaptability

ability to work effectively under pressure, react quickly, and meet tight deadlines

knowledge of the law, ethics and industry regulation as they affect Radio production

knowledge of when it is necessary, and how to acquire, the relevant clearances and licenses, including copyright and music clearances

knowledge of the requirements of the relevant Health and Safety legislation and procedures

a high level of IT skills – particularly good word-processing and data handling skills

ability to learn how to use a variety of recording equipment and to operate different radio studios

ability to present while operating studio controls and co-ordinating a range of simultaneous technical activities

ability to conduct effective internet research, use relevant computer software for audio editing, and, when necessary, to manipulate visual images or edit video, and upload all such material for use on websites.

Training and qualifications

When recruiting Radio Presenters, employers’ primary concern is evidence of hands-on experience – and time taken to develop technical and presentation skills as well as a personal style.

A degree or other qualifications are not essential for the role.

Some Radio Presenters start out in entry level roles in Radio and pursue every opportunity to develop their presenting skills until they are able to secure jobs presenting full-time.

Places on talent development schemes run by some of the larger broadcasters are highly sought after, as places are limited, and such schemes do not recruit on a regular basis.

In their selection process, the emphasis is on evidence of hands-on experience and performance, rather than specific qualifications.

With graduate recruits Radio employers do not necessarily expect the degree to be in a media-related subject, and may even prefer those with degrees in other disciplines – particularly those related to the radio genre in which they wish to work.

For those considering higher education there are a wide range of media courses on offer, but it is important to determine whether a particular course offers a good grounding in practical Radio presentation and production skills, has good contacts with the Radio industry, and whether its students are successful in obtaining work in Radio.

Once in post, Radio Presenters are expected to develop their skills on the job.

Most employers also offer a variety of forms of training to keep their Presenters’ skills and knowledge up-to-date, and to introduce new technologies.

This training may be offered in-house, or supplied by external providers, depending on the size and structure of different Radio organizations and employers.

Colleges and private training providers also offer a range of short courses which can support the professional development of individual Radio Presenters, and may offer opportunities for them to gain promotion, or to change career direction.

You can listen to Lesego Molamu on fridays from 18:00-19:00 on Mafikeng Fm.

A Kimberley man imposed with 20 year imprisonment for rape

ImageBY Obakeng Maje

The Kimberley SAPS welcomes the rape sentencing which was passed on today in the Kimberley Regional Court North Cape police said.

Tebogo Goasenkwe(28) was sentenced to an effective twenty years imprisonment after he raped a 47 year old female in the female toilet at the Castle City Tavern in Beaconsfield, Kimberley on 12 April 2011 at approximately 21:00pm.

“This came after Detective Constable Pitso Tau of the Kimberley SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences ensured that he brought a water tight case to the Court of Law” Lieutenant Sergio Kock said.

The occurrence of the mentioned incident is as follows :

“The female victim was enjoying a drink at the tavern when Tebogo Goasenkwe approached her and sat at her table. The female was employed at the tavern but was off-duty at the time the incident occurred”.

” After a while the female left the table and visited the toilet at the tavern. Tebogo followed her to the toilet and forced the door open while the victim was still busy inside. He then turned her around and started beating her face on the toilet sisten while choking her repeatedly” Police said.

” He then kept his hands over her mouth and raped her from behind, anally and then vaginally. The female victim said she was screaming but because of the loud music played inside the tavern nobody could hear her” Lieutenant Kock said.

The victim reported the rape immediately after it occurred and Tebogo Goasenkwe who is originally from Kuruman was arrested the same evening.

The female victim sustained severe injuries to her face, arms and her genitals due to the brutal rape.

“The Kimberley Cluster Commander, Major General Jean Abrahams lauds Detective Constable Pitso Tau for a brilliant job done which ensured that no impunity was granted to the criminal after he committed this heinous crime” Kock said.

“Justice has prevailed and we trust that the sentencing will serve as a deterrent to others who consider similar crimes. The SAPS sees rape as a brutal invasion of a person’s privacy and dignity therefore we hail victory with regards to the sentencing.” police said.

“The SAPS Provincial Men for Change Forum concur with the Court of Law and reiterates that rape in all it’s forms is a humiliating and degrading act which causes serious psychological trauma to it’s victims” police adds.

Bearing in mind that some rape victims never recover or rehabilitate completely after such a gruesome encouter. Men should know that we are there to love, protect and cherish women and children and ensure that their rights are in no way violated.

We celebrate the sentencing and we denounce this type of barbaric behaviour portrayed in a public place and agree that the criminal be removed from society.”

Magistrate JJ Clarke imposed a sentencing of 15 years’ for count one of the charge and 15 years’ for count two and this will be running concurrently, henceforth Tebogo Goasenkwe will be serving an effective twenty years’ imprisonment for this intentional and unlawful crime he committed said police.

After the first week of camp, the extended squad will be cut down to 22 players which the coach will take with him to do duty in Cyprus. The squad features six new players whom the coach has been eyeing in a bid to breed a new crop of players for the national team.

“I am trying to look to the future that is why I have included several players from the Under 20 National team. These are the players we are trying to give a chance because experience has taught us that we need to be prepared for all circumstances. If you remember when we went to the London Olympic Games we had four key players, so we need a bigger pool of players to be ready to slot in when needed,” said Joseph Mkhonza.

“We also want to qualify for all upcoming tournaments starting with the 2014 African Women’s Championship, where we need to finish in the top three to automatically qualify for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada. These two tournaments will help us prepare thoroughly for the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.”

Banyana Banyana is expected to depart for Cyprus on Monday, 25 February, but before that they will play a friendly match on Saturday, 23 February with still-to-be announced opponents. Banyana Banyana will also face New Zealand upon arrival in Cyprus as part of their final preparations.

The two clashes will give coach an opportunity to assess the match fitness of the players and also to look at possible combinations before the start of the tournament that will feature teams like England, Canada, Switzerland and the Republic of Ireland.

In their group, Banyana Banyana is drawn with Korea Republic, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. They will kick off against the Korea Republic on Wednesday, 6 March and will go on to play the Republic of Ireland on March 8 and will finish off their group matches against Northern Ireland on March 11.

“This is the first outing of the year for the team, so we need to start on a good footing. This tournament is key as it will give players a good work out for future tournaments,” said Mkhonza.

“We also need to improve our performance in this tournament as we finished 10th out of 12 teams last time around. A good showing will surely improve our rankings.”

The three overseas based players in the squad, Nompumelelo Nyandeni, Kylie-Ann Louw and Roxanne Barker will meet up with the rest of the squad upon the team’s arrival in Cyprus.

Pissed off by Pistorius tweets

Image
The flood of comments on Twitter and other social media platforms around Oscar Pistorius highlight the extreme dangers of unmediated social media.
One of the most basic precepts of law is that a person is innocent until proven guilty. Allied with this is the concept of audi altarem partem – you have to listen to both sides of the story.  And those who are tweeting with such delight and thoughtless impunity should remember that they are probably guilty of publishing defamatory statements for which they can be sued. None of us knows, yet, what sparked the tragedy at the Pistorius home early this morning. All we know is that it cost the life of Reeva Steenkamp. Her family and loved ones must be devastated and all of our hearts go out to them in this moment of tragedy.

People’s patience wears thin – economist

Image

The patience of South Africa’s population is wearing thin and urgent action needs to be taken to address the big concerns, including economic growth and jobs, big deficits and social stability, according Old Mutual Investment Group South Africa senior economist Johann Els.

Speaking at the company’s Breaking the Economic Deadlock conference at Montecasino yesterday, Els said although the state was spending too much, with half of its expenditure going on wages and social grants, the lingering social challenges made for a discontented society as shown by the protracted labour strikes and the uncertainty of business about the political scenario.

“Politics matters a lot to business, politics is a huge constraint for business investing in their own business,” he said.

He said the backdrop to the increasing agitation was that 2012 was dominated by fear, with the euro zone falling apart, the fear of the world economy slumping to recession and policy that either did not work or led to more errors. But despite this, “none of the risks actually materialised”.

Part of the remedy lay in achieving sustainable growth over a long period to bring unemployment down.

He lauded the National Development Plan as fantastic but said the country “needs government to have the same sense of urgency that we need to do something now”.

On the excessive expenditure on wages and social grants, Els said there was a need for tax increases, which would cushion the state’s limited resources and at the same time help to achieve sustained job creation.

“Unfortunately there is no decent growth model, there is no single sector that can boost the economy,” he said.

Articulating the problems that needed to be addressed, Els pointed out the following:

l uncertainty about future policy direction; excessive government regulation and meddling in the economy; low employment absorption, which was a function of the labour laws, education, productivity and labour relations; corruption, which was a drag on infrastructure and tainted South Africa’s investor attraction;

l infrastructure backlogs, in which implementation crosswinds hampered plans;

l escalating costs in the economy, including wages, electricity, fuel, water and public service charges; and

l fiscal constraints, including the state’s wage bill and grant explosion, that threatened the infrastructure drive.

Making an assessment of South Africa’s ranking in the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Index of 144 countries, Els said the country lagged behind pathetically in labour/employer co-operation, where it was last. It was 143rd in maths and science education, the same in hiring and firing practices and 140th in quality of higher education and flexibility of wage setting.

“On the upside, say the fixes are made with vigour and speed, confidence recovers and growth and employment improves, but if the fixes are not made, investor confidence grinds lower, growth stagnates at 3 percent, social and financial pressures mount relentlessly and the end game is a crises,” he said.

Speaking at the same event, veteran journalist and author Max du Preez said the worst never happened in South Africa but sadly, neither did the best.

Pretoria – The State intends charging paralympian Oscar Pistorius with premeditated murder after the death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court heard on Friday.

“Is the State’s argument premeditated murder?” asked Magistrate Desmond Nair asked.

“Yes,” said prosecutor advocate Gerrie Nel.

‘Dangerous’ killer gets three life terms

Image

Pretoria – There are still more questions than answers about what happened on the night a Theresa Park woman and her two small children were murdered, but for now her killer has been sentenced to three life sentences and 28 years’ imprisonment.

Sipho Masiqa, 36, maintained to the end that he had nothing to do with the July 2010 murders of Thifhelimibilu (Pauline) Mashau and her two children – four-year-old Adivhao and eight-month-old Aveani.

Mashau’s half naked body, dressed only in a pink pyjama top, was found in bushes near Ga-Rankuwa two days after the bodies of her children were found in her home. She had been stabbed with a knife and strangled to death and was sexually assaulted.

The baby was discovered face down in the bath and her sister in a bedroom with a balaclava pulled over her face. Both children had been strangled and suffocated.

“You are a dangerous man who needs to be permanently removed from society,” Judge Bert Bam told Masiqa yesterday.

The murder of the woman was an act of savagery, he said.

“Not only was she stabbed, but she was also strangled. She was overpowered while still in her pyjamas. The killing of her two children was also brutal and barbaric.”

The judge said the two children were defenceless.

“Why they were murdered remains a mystery. It seems so senseless to kill little children. They could pose no threat to anyone.”

The judge said the children were shown no mercy. “The killing of children is a reprehensible crime.”

Masiqa had told the court several versions. The first was that Mashau asked him for a firearm to kill herself, while the second was that she asked him to kill her. The third was that Mashau asked him to stage a robbery at her house for insurance purposes.

Masiqa said he staged the robbery, but had nothing to do with the murders. According to him, she killed her own children and gave him R10 000 and her car for staging the robbery.

Masiqa admitted he was at her home on the night of the murder.

He claimed Mashau and a man named Peter fetched him from work and took him to the house.

The woman took the children to a bedroom, he said, and he never saw them again.
