By Obakeng Maje

The SAFA National Executive Committee (NEC) has called up a meeting on Saturday, 23 February 2013 to discuss and confirm recommendations of the Legal and Constitutional Affairs and Security Committees with regards to the FIFA Match Fixing report and the way forward.

The NEC meeting of 4 January 2013 resolved to rescind decisions of the Emergency Committee (EmCo) of 17 December and the matter was referred to the two SAFA Committees, (Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee and Security Committee) for further consideration.

The scheduled next meeting on 23 February will take place at SAFA House.

Among others, the decisions relate to the 17 December 2012 EmCo report relating to the suspension of the President of the Association, Mr Kirsten Nematandani as stated in the letters written to FIFA, CAF, SASCO, Minister of Sport and COSAFA which were reviewed and set aside and corrected.

The matter also relate to the suspension of the SAFA staff members which was reviewed and set aside and corrected by referring it to the Acting CEO of SAFA for his consideration and further action.

“We have therefore, called an NEC meeting on 23 February 2013 to discuss and confirm the recommendations of the two Committees whose recommendations remain confidential.

“The NEC will take the decision, and no other body has the authority to make any determination on the matter and any presupposition on the issue is premature. We should always keep in mind the rules of natural justice,” said chair of the Legal and Constitutional Committee, Pooby Govindasamy. “It must be emphasised that to speculate on the outcome of any hearing is dangerous as any person is presumed innocent and must be given an opportunity to explain any allegations against him or her in order to ensure fairness in the process.”

DA remain “tight-lipped” on Ramphele

Image

Cape Town – Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille on Saturday said she is furiously preparing for the next general elections in 2014, which she has estimated will fall on April 27, marking 20 years since the country ushered in democracy.

Addressing a SA National Editors’ Forum dinner in Cape Town, she said five things were needed for a political party to be successful with voters. It had to have a coherent political philosophy, strong institutions, excellent research capabilities, performance-based evaluation systems for its staff and leaders, and capacity to raise money, a lot of it.

The biggest political mistake that could be made was to believe there was internal contestation within one party.

She predicted that there would likely be announcements of mergers, coalitions and alliances in the run-up to the election because parties believed this was a way to secure more votes. “I can assure you that if there is a new platform established and political parties get together to talk about how they will contest the election, it will be six months of haggling over what systems are used, the processes to use, who gets what position on which list,” Zille said. “We are masters of political alliances and mergers…some have worked well, some have worked badly, some have succeeded, some have failed but we’ve learnt lessons from every single one of them.” The Western Cape premier remained tight-lipped about former activist Mamphela Ramphele’s future political plans. The two worked together at the University of Cape Town many years ago. “Mamphela and I have raised children together, we chat often, we remain good friends and I know quite a lot (about her plans) but I don’t like to speak for other people.” Ramphele was set to announce her plans on Monday, amid media reports she was starting a political party. When asked if Ramphele would be fast-tracked to top DA leadership should she join the party, Zille said there would be no special treatment. “If she had to stand for a position, she would have to go through the process like any person.” She said in this theoretical situation, it was likely that Ramphele would naturally be chosen for a leadership position by party members because of her skills and experience. Asked if she was worried about the impact Ramphele would have on the DA should she start her own party, she said: “No”.

Zille said Ramphele’s plans formed part of a long road to a strong two-party system in South Africa, a political “re-alignment”. Central to this political re-alignment was the National Development Plan (NDP), which contained “profound and powerful proposals” that would unblock the political space and create growth. She said she was amazed that President Jacob Zuma “lost” an opportunity to spend more time on the NDP in his state-of-the-nation address this week. “His main opposition, the DA, had endorsed the NDP which emanates from his own office. He managed at Mangaung (ANC elective conference) to get a mandate for the NDP, and yet, ironically, when he gets up… he doesn’t say a word about it.” Zuma spoke briefly about the NDP in the National Assembly, saying it was a roadmap for the country to have 100 percent access to basic services, housing, jobs, transport, education, social protection, healthcare, recreation and a clean environment. “The achievement of these goals has proven to be difficult in the recent past, due the global economic recession,” he said at the time. – Sapa

Real men should stand up to be counted against sexual violence- Premier Modise

North West Premier Thandi Modise has called on traditional leaders, politicians across the political spectrum, pastors, celebrities and sports men to stand up to be counted in order to give the anti-rape campaign impetus. Premier Modise made the plea in condemning the gang rape of a 33 year old hitch hiker by six men.

“Rape has reached alarming and unacceptable levels and calls for united action therefore real men need to stand up to be counted against sexual violence which cuts across race, gender and class.’ said Modise

The Premier appeals to members of the community who could have witnessed the incident or saw those responsible for the ghastly act to come forward with information that might assist police in their investigations.

According to police, the man was hitch hiking from Rustenburg to Kroondal on his way from work when a white Toyota Hilux with six male occupants stopped to offer him a lift at around five o clock on Thursday afternoon.

It is alleged that along the waythe suspects demanded the victim’s wallet with intentions to rob him but found it empty. Instead of stopping at Mooinooi where the man was supposed to alight, the suspects supposedly drove into nearby bushes where they allegedly injected the victim with an unknown drug. The suspects purportedly put a plastic bag on the victim’s head and took turns raping him before leaving him in the bushes.

According to Spokesperson of the North West Police, Brigadier Thulane Ngubane, those who came to the man’s rescue took him to Job Shimakana Provincial Hospital in Rustenburg.
