Pirates might be off the hook for now

Image

ORLANDO Pirates appear to be off the hook following violence on Saturday night by their fans during an MTN8 semifinal.

Pirates fans threw firecrackers onto the pitch at Orlando Stadium and fought with fans from SuperSport United.

The Pirates fans were angered by the sending off of Benni McCarthy, and a 3-0 win by United.

The PSL, however, refused to apportion blame to a specific group of fans, saying only that a “faction” was responsible.

Attempts to clarify the PSL’s stance were unsuccessful.

The PSL official in charge of the disciplinary committee, Ntietso Mofokeng, was not available for comment yesterday. PSL acting CEO Cambridge Mokanyane said the league would “not tolerate such behaviour”.

On three occasions firecrackers were thrown at United goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez, once resulting in a minute-long stoppage when referee Robert Smith took the players to the centre circle.

Plastic bottles were thrown onto the pitch. Mokanyane said: “What we saw. cannot be condoned.

“It is not good for us or for the image of football.”

But on Pirates’ website yesterday, fans expressed their disgust. “Referee or not, we as fans were pathetic and barbaric destroying our own stadia,” said a Pirates supporter named Okonkwo. Assassin of Orlando said: “This time we are going to pay! How many suspended sentences do we have pending?”

Do not misuse Marikana: ANC

Image

The ANC’s national executive committee (NEC) has asked that the shooting in Marikana not be used for political gain, secretary general Gwede Mantashe said yesterday.

“The special NEC appeals to all South Africans that nobody must use the tragedy for political and opportunistic reasons,” Mantashe said in a statement.

“It the NEC expressed its support for the judicial commission of inquiry and… the composition of the inter-ministerial committee by government.”

The African National Congress held a special NEC meeting yesterday. Police opened fire on striking Lonmin platinum mineworkers on a hilltop in Marikana, North West, last Thursday, killing 34 of them and wounding 78.

Workers had been on strike for nearly two weeks, demanding that their salaries be increased to R12 500 a month. President Jacob Zuma appointed a commission of inquiry, headed by retired Supreme Court of Appeal judge Ian Farlam, to investigate  the shooting.

Mantashe said the NEC was also looking at reports on local government and its performance.  “This follows the completion of the ANC’s internal monitoring report and the recent Auditor General’s report.

“Both reports had highlighted areas considered to be posing a challenge in the composition and functioning of local government,” he said. A report by AG Terence Nombembe, released in July, revealed that  only five percent of municipalities received clean audits, while none of the country’s metros received clean audits.
