WORSHIPPERS at a Soweto church were taken by surprise yesterday when their minister was arrested after the service.

The Uniting Reformed Church minister’s arrest follows a charge of theft and malicious damage to property laid against him by a congregant.

The congregant allegedly lent his car to the priest in 2010 to use as he did not own a car at the time.

“I lent him the car in February 2010. In September last year I checked on the car with the minister and realised that the engine was missing,” the congregant said.

The minister, who cannot be named until he appears in court, had allegedly promised to fix the car but has yet to do so.

“He promised me in October last year he would fix my car, but now he does not answer my calls,” he said.

North West – A North West police constable was arrested on Friday after she allegedly killed a man by throwing him from a moving car, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said.

The 32-year-old policewoman from Jouberton, in Klerksdorp, allegedly killed 20-year-old Kleinbooi Matthews on Sunday, IPID spokesman Moses Dlamini said in a statement.

“A group of youths were walking from a nearby tavern on the way home. A police vehicle stopped near an Engen garage and the driver of the police vehicle (the constable) called the victim to the police vehicle,” he said.

“It is alleged that the driver… then closed the window of the police vehicle and drove away while the victim’s head was inside. The rest of the victim’s body was dangling outside.”

He said the window was then opened and the man was thrown to the road.

Paramedics declared him dead at the scene.

Mystery over missing SA yachtsman

missing skipper

A South African family has flown to the Seychelles in a desperate bid for news on missing yachtsman Sean Terry, formerly of Cape Town, who disappeared in mysterious circumstances while completing what was to be the final leg of his circumnavigation of the globe on his yacht Finnegan.

Police in the Seychelles are investigating the disappearance of the SA/British national yachtsman, 48, who despite being an experienced yachtsman and skipper was allegedly lost overboard.

Although he usually sailed alone, Terry was accompanied by an Australian national on the final leg when he planned to sail from Sri Lanka to Chagos, and then on to Madagascar. The Australian is being held for questioning by police in the Seychelles.

Kgalema in race – experts

Evidence is mounting that Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe will stand against President Jacob Zuma for the ANC leadership at the party’s elective conference in December.

It was reported at the weekend that Motlanthe would not entertain attempts by Zuma lobbyists to cut a deal that would include him on the president’s leadership slate for the top six positions of the ANC’s national executive committee at Mangaung.

Analysts on Sunday said this was a clear signal that Motlanthe was likely to take up the political cudgels against Zuma.

Political analyst Professor Susan Booysen agreed that Motlanthe now appeared to be campaigning for the top job. “Zuma is doing an ‘I am not campaigning’ campaign,” she said. “It is probable that, in that context, Motlanthe has indicated, rather than denied, that he is available.
