A boys’ night out almost turned deadly for three friends as they tried to help a woman in distress on the R25 Modderfontein Road.

Bongani Thuswa, 32, was driving to Kempton Park with his two friends to pick up another friend on Friday night.

“We missed our turn at the robot and had to make a U-turn just after the Tembisa off-ramp.”

That U-turn probably saved Kgaugelo Rankapole’s life.

Rankapole, 25, lives in Kempton Park and was driving towards Greenstone at around 9.20pm to meet a friend when she saw a black Corsa bakkie shining its bright lights into her car.

“I thought he was in an emergency and so I moved from the fast lane to the left lane,” she said.

The bakkie’s driver (who is known to The Star) pursued her and tried to cut her off.

“I stopped my car and the driver stopped his car in the yellow lane,” said Rankapole.

“He was very hostile,” she said.

The North West Province’s Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality is the first municipality in the country to be approved by National Treasury to pledge their conditional grants in order to bring forward implementation of water and sanitation projects within its area of jurisdiction.

The Development Bank of Southern Africa(DBSA)’s Divisional Executive for Communication, Marketing and Public Affairs, Rosemary Mangope announced  at the economic infrastructure colloquium gala dinner held at Sun City Resort on Monday evening that that future government grant transfers will be considered as an option to raise capital for the implementation of various projects and programmes.

Mangope said that the majority of local and district municipalities have little or no capacity to generate own revenue due to limited economic base, and are unable to raise normal debt and alternative sources of funding on their balance sheets.

“The DBSA is ready to renew current partnership arrangements and take implementation to new heights .At provincial level, we will continue to interact with the Provincial Planning Commission  to identify infrastructure needs and funding mechanisms and explore long term solutions in support of the Strategic infrastructure Programme(SIP4),” she committed.

She said that the DBSA has committed, in principle, to establish a partnership arrangement which will assist in the development, project preparation, implementation support and Operations and maintenance.

“The DBSA is thus called to play its diverse role as financier, partner, advisor, integrator and implementer. We hope that together with other Development Finance institutions, sector departments and private sector, we’ll contribute towards the development of sustainable social and economic infrastructure geared towards job creation and brining about good quality of people’s lives,” she concluded.

Sustainable energy and renewable energy for job creation and sustainable livelihoods

BY Obakeng Maje

The North West Province should tap into sustainable energy sources and renewable energy as they have the potential to create jobs that can give unemployed people sustainable livelihoods, Acting Premier Louisa Mabe asserted at the economic infrastructure colloquium gala dinner hosted by the North West Planning Commission at Sun City resort on Monday evening .

Acting Premier Mabe in her keynote address challenged mining houses to support the North West University and colleges as centres of mining related skills excellence.

“The mining industry is the backbone of our economy because mining accounts for 38% of the province’s Gross Domestic Product. The 296 mining operations located in the province accounts for 25% of all mining operations in South Africa and employs 38% of the total number of jobs in the mining sector.

The central question we need to preoccupy ourselves with, is to address the dichotomy of being endowed with rich minerals and yet being declared as one of the poorest provinces of South Africa. What makes it difficult to beneficiate communities in the province to create sustainable job and grow our economy?” the Acting Premier asked adding that Tourism, Agriculture and Manufacturing have huge potential for growth and development.

Mabe emphasised that the foundations laid during the colloquium has potential to unlock economic potential of the province because economic infrastructure development is a catalyst for unlocking development and the potential of the province that should also have a multiplier effect on socio-economic development .

She highlighted that the Planning Commission established by Premier Mme Thandi Modise in 2011 has to finalise a Provincial Growth Plan that is aligned to the New Growth Plan before the end of this year.

“It is critical that the plan be finalised and implemented to propel the province towards a New Growth Path” she emphasised.

BY Obakeng Maje

Minister of Energy, Dipuo Peters has urged mining houses to play their part by taking a leading role in energy efficiency programmes, Peters made the call on the first day of the Provincial economic infrastructure colloquium held at Sun City outside Rustenburg.

Minister Peters discouraged the use of grid connected electricity to power boreholes and agricultural irrigation schemes and advocated the use of solar technology to provide water and feed people.

Banyana Banyana looking to leave the Olympics on a high

]

BY Obakeng Maje

The South African Senior Women’s National Team (Banyana Banyana) will be looking to leave the Olympic Games on a high note, when they take the challenge to World Cup champions Japan in their final Group F fixture. The match will be played on Tuesday, 31 July 2012 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.

Kickoff is at 14h30 (15h30 SA time).

Despite defeats to Sweden and Canada, captain Amanda Dlamini’s team will leave the world’s greatest sports showpiece richer in football experience. This could prove to be of major value as they prepare to put in a bid to lift the CAF African Women Championship 2012 title in Equatorial Guinea in October this year.

The results in the first two matches mean Banyana Banyana will not progress to the next round.

But the sports world will remember the team for the superb strike from 45 metres out by forward Portia Modise which resulted in South Africa’s historic first goal in Olympic Games women’s football history. This was in Banyana Banyana’s 4-1 loss to Sweden on Wednesday, 25 July 2012.

Japan, ranked No 3 in the world, go into the match against South Africa at the back of Group F outings which saw them record a 2-1 win over Canada and a goalless draw against Sweden.

“We are looking forward to the match against Japan, as our styles are similar in that they like to keep and play the ball on the ground and so do we. We had hoped to do well in our opening two matches to stand any chance of proceeding to the next round, but it was not to be and I would like to applaud the whole team for giving their all. We have one match remaining in the competition and we are confident we can come with a positive result even though we know it won’t be easy,” said Dlamini.

“On behalf of Banyana Banyana, I would like to thank SASCOC, SAFA and our loyal sponsor Sasol, for all the support that they have given to our team and it was a privilege to be a part of Team SA at the London Olympics. We have learnt so much from these two games and we hope they will put us in good stead when we challenge for the AWC title later this year.”

North West has energy potential, nuclear and biogas niche – Minister Peters

BY Obakeng Maje

The North West Province has oil and gas potential that is being explored by the Petroleum Agency of South Africa (PASA), Minister of Energy Dipuo Peters revealed in her keynote address delivered at the economic infrastructure colloquium that commenced at Sun City on Monday.

Minister Peters said that the North West Province is well positioned to be a nuclear skills development hub especially in view of the role that the North West University is already playing by producing the world sought after nuclear professionals.

The Minister called on the provincial government to continue to support the university in its rare skills development endeavour.

Peters also identified the province’s competitive advantage to lead in biogas as cow dung provides another potential energy source.

“We also believe that we need to work together with communities on programmes like Working for Energy, where with the support of the South African National Energy Development Institute we can exploit the Biogas potential due to the fact that NW is the cattle ranch of South Africa,” she stressed.

The two-day colloquium themed “Growth and Development Colloquim: Strategies to unlock the economic potential of the North West Province” to focus on strategic development priorities of water, energy, economic infrastructure and roads identified by Premier Thandi Modise is aimed at:

  • ·         Establishing an understanding of the significance of infrastructure development to growth and development in the province
  • ·         Exploring infrastructure development to accelerate job creation
  • ·         Laying the foundation for the development of the provincial long term plan that is aligned to the National Development Plan
  • ·         Interacting with other role players in infrastructure development

The colloquium which has attracted public sector and public sector from across all spheres of government and the private sector ends on Tuesday.

Bogus brigadier fools cops

Musa Khumalo

KwaZulu-Natal – When Johannesburg police circulated a picture of an alleged killer who had escaped from custody, alarm bells rang for their counterparts in KwaZulu-Natal, where some knew him for his sterling work as a police brigadier.

Zimbabwean Musa or Muzi Khumalo had escaped from a Joburg jail early last year, allegedly with the help of a warder, only days after he had been charged with murder.

Now there are concerns that he may have used his “position” in the elite Hawks unit to shut down opposition crime syndicates.

National police commissioner General Riah Phiyega and Hawks boss Lieutenant-General Anwa Dramat are determined to see him behind bars.

“A bakkie stopped next to me and a man got out and pointed a gun at me,” the girl told the High Court sitting in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court in Alberton.

The girl, who was 14-years-old at the time, was testifying in the trial of Johannes Jacobus Steyn, who is accused of murdering schoolgirls Louise de Waal and Lazanne Farmer.

She gave evidence in camera as she is a minor. Her mother sat with her for support in a room outside the court. Her father sat in the courtroom.

The girl testified that her kidnapper, who wore a wig and large sunglasses, blindfolded her and drove her to an unknown location.

He forced her to smoke and tried to kiss her, but she pulled away.

“He told me to do what he says and stop being stubborn.”

She said she started crying. He undressed her and saw she was menstruating.
