India rape victim cremated

iol news pic India rape victim cremated

New Delhi – A young woman who died after being gang-raped and beaten on a bus in India’s capital was cremated Sunday amid an outpouring of anger and grief by millions across the country demanding greater protection for women from sexual violence.

The cremation took place during a private ceremony in New Delhi soon after the woman’s body arrived in the capital on a special Air India flight from Singapore, where she died at a hospital Saturday after being sent for medical treatment.

After the body arrived at the airport, it was taken to the woman’s home in New Delhi for religious rituals before being escorted by police to the crematorium.

Security was tight, with no access to the public or media at the crematorium.

Sheila Dikshit, the top elected leader of New Delhi, and junior Home Minister R.P.N. Singh placed wreaths beside the body before it was cremated, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi, head of the ruling Congress party, were at the airport to receive the body and meet family members of the victim who had also arrived on the flight.

Hours after the victim died early Saturday, Indian police charged six men who had been arrested in connection with the attack with murder, adding to accusations that they beat and gang-raped the woman on a New Delhi bus on December 16.

New Delhi police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said the six suspects face the death penalty if convicted, in a case that has triggered protests across India and raised questions about lax attitudes by police toward sexual crimes.

After 10 days at a hospital in New Delhi, the victim, who has not been identified, was taken Thursday to Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth hospital, which specializes in multi-organ transplants. She arrived there in extremely critical condition, and then took a turn for the worse, with her vital signs deteriorating. She died with her family and officials of the Indian Embassy by her side, according to the chief executive of the hospital, Dr. Kevin Loh.

Following her death, thousands of Indians lit candles, held prayer meetings and marched through various cities and towns, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Kolkata, on Saturday night to express their grief and demand stronger protection for women and the death penalty for rape, which is now punishable by a maximum of life imprisonment.

Women face daily harassment across India, ranging from catcalls on the streets, groping and touching in public transport to rape.

The tragedy has forced India to confront the reality that sexually assaulted women are often blamed for the crime, forcing them to keep quiet and discouraging them from reporting it to authorities for fear of exposing their families to ridicule. Police often refuse to accept complaints from those who are courageous enough to report the rapes, and the rare prosecutions that reach courts drag on for years.

Prime Minister Singh said Saturday that he was aware of the emotions the attack has stirred, adding that it was up to all Indians to ensure that the young woman’s death will not have been in vain.

On the night of the attack, the woman and a male friend, who also has not been identified, were on a bus after watching a film when they were attacked by six men who raped her. The men beat the couple and inserted an iron rod into the woman’s body, resulting in severe organ damage. Both were then stripped and thrown off the bus, according to police.

Dipali, a working woman who uses one name, said the rape victim deserved justice. “I hope it never happens again to any girl,” she said.

Gandhi, the ruling party chief, assured the protesters in a statement that the rape victim’s death “deepens our determination to battle the pervasive, the shameful social attitudes and mindset that allow men to rape and molest women and girls with such an impunity.”

Meenakshi Ganguly, South Asia director of Human Rights Watch, said the woman’s death was a sobering reminder of the widespread sexual violence in India.

“The outrage now should lead to law reform that criminalizes all forms of sexual assault, strengthens mechanisms for implementation and accountability, so that the victims are not blamed and humiliated,” Ganguly said.

Prime Minister Singh said he understood the angry reaction to the attack and that he hoped all Indians would work together to make appropriate changes.

“It would be a true homage to her memory if we are able to channel these emotions and energies into a constructive course of action,” he said.

Attitudes by Indians toward rape are so entrenched that even politicians and opinion makers have often suggested that women should not go out at night or wear clothes that might be seen as provocative.

A statement issued by United Nations spokesman Martin Nesirky said U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon “offers his sincerest condolences” to the victim’s family and “utterly condemns this brutal crime.”

“Violence against women must never be accepted, never excused, never tolerated,” the statement said. “Every girl and woman has the right to be respected, valued and protected.”

Ban urged the Indian government to take steps to deter such crimes and bring perpetrators to justice, and to “strengthen critical services for rape victims,” the statement said. – Sapa-AP

Durban businessmen in sex scam

prostitute

Durban – Prominent Durban businessmen, literally caught with their pants down, are at the centre of a multi-million-rand extortion racket operated by sex-workers and crooked private investigators.

This week, PI Brad Nathanson lifted the lid on the scam and, speaking exclusively to the Sunday Tribune, told of how the con has been operating for years, with scores of victims paying hush money totalling more than R1 million to make salacious photographs of their trysts disappear. If they refuse to pay, racketeers threaten to send the incriminating photos or video footage to their wives.

Two weeks ago a Durban businessman fell victim to the scam after paying for a “massage” at a Morningside hotel.

His attorney, who asked not to be named, said the man had contacted him after scam artists demanded R20 000 to prevent them showing pictures of the encounter to his wife.

“Normally he would get a massage at this woman’s house but because she had family there, they decided to meet at a lodge. He had a massage and before he got home a guy called him and said that he had my client’s details and said that if he did not pay by close of business that day, he would disclose this to his wife and employer,” the attorney said.

“Before he had spoken to me, my client offered to pay them R6 000. I met with him and the extortionist phoned again while we were sitting together. I told him I was a lawyer and I said that the police and the press were onto the issue and we would under no circumstances bow to demands,” the attorney said.

He enlisted the services of Nathanson, who started on the case immediately.

“Two days before Christmas he received another threat and since then there has been no word,” the lawyer added.

Nathanson said that he had identified the scam’s ring leader, a Durban-based private investigator, whose alias “Bullocks” had cropped up in many of the extortion cases that had landed on his desk.

“I first learned about this scam about four years ago. I had a resident of the upper Highway area call me in a state saying he had been scammed and needed help. My client’s wife was going away for the weekend and he decided to… find a prostitute to entertain him while she was away,” Nathanson said.

“He made several mistakes and one of them was bringing this woman back to his own house.

“When she arrived this fee had changed and was exponentially more than… he had organised on the phone. At that point he should have picked up that something was amiss, but he entertained it because she was already there and he paid the inflated rate,” he said.

“The prostitute then refused to ‘get down to business’ until she had had cocaine and insisted that my client buy her drugs. He then negotiated a fee with her driver for cocaine and its delivery which also went up in price considerably when it arrived.

“They had sex and afterwards, while he was using the bathroom, she allegedly used her cameraphone to take pictures of his bedroom. The driver returned and there was another fee to remove this woman. This man was handled right from the get-go.”

Hard work pays off for IEB Learners

Image

JOHANNESBURG – While education experts say the 98.2 percent pas rate achieved by the IEB matric class of 2012 is no surprise, the Independent Examinations Board has emphasised the value of basic education.

The matriculant’s results were released yesterday.

More than 8, 900 pupils at 183 private schools and an additional 534 part-time pupils wrote the matric exams uMalusi has declared fair and credible.

The class of 2012 fared slightly better than that of 2011 – who achieved a 96.15 percent pass rate.

A St John’s College matriculant who has been accepted into Harvard University in the United States on Saturday told Eyewitness News that he was overjoyed.

Jacques van Rhyn was one of the top students at the Houghton school who ranked in the top one percent of candidates in the country in four subjects, including Mathematics and Afrikaans.

Van Rhyn, who also obtained an overall average of 94 percent, says he wants to study an undergraduate degree majoring in Mathematics.

“I’m very happy, I’m really excited! It’s fantastic [that] my hard work has paid off.”

His mother Heleen believes it is more than just Jacques’ academic performance that got him into Harvard.

She says she believes it is St Johns’ reputation and Jacques’ charity work that got him noticed by admission officers at the Ivy League institution.

The school achieved a 100 percent pass rate.

Meanwhile, education expert Graeme Bloch has praised the IEB class of 2012.

Nkhatha: Bafana can win Afcon

Image

Kaizer Chiefs striker Kingston Nkhatha has travelled in Africa with the Zimbabwean national team and, as South Africa prepares to host the Afcon 2013, the former Black Leopards striker believes Bafana Bafana has what it takes to win the trophy at home.

Bafana Bafana are in Group A with surprise package Cape Verde, Morocco and Angola and Nkhatha thinks they will top the group and go all the way.

He told Soccer-Laduma that he plays with many national team players at Amakhosi and he knows they are quality, capable of winning the Afcon 2013.

“This is a good team that can challenge for top honours in Africa. They have been unfortunate in many cases where they play very well but just fail to win,” he said.

“But I think when next year comes they will be a well gelled team that can beat any team in Africa in the tournament. They are hosting and you know how passionate South Africans are when it comes to their football.

“If they can fill the stadiums and support the team I see no reason why the team can’t win this trophy. They For have what it takes to win it,” Nkhatha concluded.

Bafana coach wields axe

By Obakeng Maje

Bafana Bafana wrapped up the three-day training camp at Orlando Stadium where head coach Gordon Igesund had a last look at players before naming his final 23-man squad tomorrow.

The announcement will be made at the Southern Sun Monet Casino Hotel in Fourways, Johannesburg at 15h00.

A total of 33 players took part in the training camp but will be trimmed to 23 for the Africa Cup of Nations South Africa 2013 tournament.

“I am excited that everything went well, the players raised their hands to say they want to be included in the final squad. You could tell almost all of them don’t want to be left out. This was a very important camp where we had the cream of the crop and I saw what I wanted to see. Now the wait for the players begins while for me it’s crunch time. The challenge is who to leave out,” said Igesund.

England-based Kagisho Dikgacoi and Dean Furman, as well as Belgium-based Darren Keet were not part of the training camp due to club commitments, while Benni McCarthy, Eric Mathoho and Ayanda Patosi will not be considered due to injuries.

Things to ditch as 2012 passes

Image

New Year is the time for throwing out the old… and the style police on social networking sites have a few suggestions.

Here’s a list of all the things that have been named as “so 2012!”

Skinny jeans on men are out, leave the hips and the curves to the girls.

Colour blocking, no you don’t have to compete with the rainbow any more.

Ditto for colour hair extensions.

Weird baby names from Tinkerbell to Buzz-Bee to Nemo, Peaches and Apple. We live in the real world, not fairyland or Disneyworld.

YOLO – we can blame rapper Drake for popularising this useless phrase. We all know that “you only live once” unless some have their identity confused with that of a cat.

50 Shades of Grey, let’s move on to a more colourful (and intellectual) read.

Julius Malema jokes, leave him be to tend to his cabbages.

Khaya Mthethwa and Chad le Clos could move into the “so 2012” bracket, but as they are said to be single – these are celebs to keep an eye on in 2013.

Remarks about the weight of Adele, Christina and Lady Gaga, let’s find something a little more phat to talk about.

Putting the last name of a celebrity on your Facebook profile name, oh yes Mary Smith-”Bieber” we are talking to you!

Pouting in pics, leave that to the chimps in the zoo.

If you are doing the Gangnam style at your New Year’s Eve party at one minute past 12, you are so 2012.

Using Facebook as a bragbook, to talk about the places you’re going to, the outfits you buy or your latest gadgets.

Last but not least, Twilight fans – it’s time to find something new to read/watch, try finding a hobby. Here’s to 2013 and the promise of new fun trends, new dance moves and #GoodTimes. -Saturday Star
