SA U20 Women on fire as they approach Zone VI Games semi-finals

BY Obakeng Maje

The South African Women’s Under 20 National Team, Basetsana, have finished top in the Group stages of the Zone VI Games played in Lusaka.

In their last group stage match, the South Africans defeated Zimbabwe 5-0 on Tuesday, 11 December 2012.

The U20 women’s section of the tournament consists of four teams, which now means after they have played against each other in the group stages, all four sides get into the semi-final phase.

The number one placed team will face number three, with the second placed facing the fourth placed side. This means, South Africa will play Zambia on Thursday, 13 December in the first semi-final at the Zanaco Sunset Stadium starting at 11h00 while Zimbabwe will face Namibia in the other match at the same venue. That match kicks off at 15h00.

Basetsana has had a great run so far in the tournament, defeating hosts Zambia 1-0 in the opening match of the women’s competition on Friday, 07 December. They followed that with a goalless draw against Namibia (Sunday, 09 December) played at the Nkoloma Stadium, before thrashing neighbours Zimbabwe 5-0.

Basetsana head coach, Sheryl Botes is feeling confident ahead of the semi-final clash.

“I am excited that we have made it this far in the competition. I have brought along several young players to complement the experienced players so we can have continuity as we approach the World Cup qualifiers next year. The girls have showed great potential throughout the competition and we are confident if we keep on playing the way we have been doing, we should be able to reach the final,” said Botes.

“Despite beating the hosts in the opening game, we are very much aware that the clash against Zambia will not be easy and I have been preaching it to the players. The fact that they are playing at home, and a spot in the final is at stake will make things tough for us, and we need not be complacent because this is a completely different match altogether.”

The third and fourth place play-offs will take place at the Zanaco Sunset Stadium on Friday, 14 December at 15h00.

The final will be held on Sunday, 16 December at the Nkoloma Stadium.

Kick-off is at 11h00.

A domestic worker has been found dead in her employer’s farmhouse in Kraalhoek, near Rustenburg, North West police said on Wednesday.

The 43-year-old woman was found dead in the lounge on Tuesday by a caretaker and a gardener, said Lt-Col Lesego Metsi.

It was suspected that the shot that killed her was fired through a sliding door from outside the house. A spent 9mm cartridge was found.

The woman had been left to look after the house when her employers went on holiday on Friday.

Police had ruled out the possibility that the motive was robbery, because nothing was stolen from the house.

“All property including vehicles and household valuables and her cellphone had not been tampered with,” said Metsi.

Investigations were continuing.

Mahikeng, North West –

A third person has been reported dead in torrential rainfall in the Mahikeng area, North West police said on Wednesday.

An 80-year-old woman was found dead on Tuesday afternoon, beneath a tree between Rantse and Marotse village, said Lt-Col Lesego Metsi.

Mosebi Lenah Motsemme was walking home after visiting her daughter in another village.

“Due to heavy rainfall she lost direction and decided to seek shelter under a tree,” Metsi said.

When she did not return home, her son went looking for her and found her beneath the tree, dead.

Two people were found dead in Madibogo South on Tuesday night, Metsi said.

The first death was a 22-year-old man, who was caught in heavy rain while walking home. His aunt said he coughed the entire night and was unable to walk or talk before dying.

The second was a 52-year-old man who was found dead in a field used for grazing animals.

“It is suspected that he could have been struck by lightning while looking for his cattle when caught up in the heavy rains on his way back.”

The Motsitlane, Dikgatlhong, and Lenganeng sections of Madibogo village have been hit by heavy storms this week.

Metsi said one house had been destroyed, a tavern and several other houses had been damaged, and several families had been left homeless. The damage was estimated at R80 000.

He said the house which was destroyed had belonged to the family of Selina Tsubane, 40, who lived there with her three children and two nieces. She survived on child support grants. – Sapa

NWest Scopa ‘unfair’: Mabe

IOL news sep 9 si thandi

The North West’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) was “grossly unfair” in not accepting education MEC Louisa Mabe’s apology for failing to appear before the committee, her department said on Wednesday.

“She was only given one-day’s notice to appear before the committee,” said department spokesman Gershwin Chuenyane in a statement.

“She had prior commitments which she could not postpone as they were agreed a while ago.”

Mabe was asked to appear before the committee to address media reports stating she and finance MEC Paul Sebegoe had spent R13

million on a disciplinary hearing.

The North West legislature said in a statement on Tuesday the disciplinary hearing concerned suspended department head (HOD) Johannes Mohlala.

Chuenyane said: “MEC Mabe will not respond to the allegations pertaining to the disciplinary hearing of the department of finance head of department 1/8due to the disciplinary hearing still in progress 3/8.”

Sebegoe’s department said on Tuesday the newspaper report alleging he and Mabe spent R13 million on legal fees for the hearing was wrong.

“The information published by the newspaper in question is gross misrepresentation of facts,” department spokeswoman Kesalopa Gill said in a statement.

“The MEC submitted an apology for not attending the Scopa meeting as he was not available due to prior commitments. It is unfortunate that no arrangements were made to determine 1/8his 3/8 availability.”

The department had taken up the matter with the editor and was awaiting a response.

Gill said that with the matter still under review, the department could not comment further on the case.

On Tuesday, Scopa called for the expulsion of the two MECs.

This came after Sebegoe and Mabe failed to appear before Scopa to address media reports relating to the disciplinary hearing.

Acting HOD Geo Paul reportedly wrote to Mabe asking if she was going to avoid standard practice and appoint a law firm on contract for the hearing, the cost of which was not allowed to exceed R500,000.

However, according to media reports an invoice from the law firm Mabe appointed showed the department paid nearly R2 million for a single invoice, spending R13 million in total.

It was reported that Mabe was the chief witness in the matter.

Scopa wanted Mabe and Sebegoe expelled because they both failed to appear before the committee to explain the matter as requested.

“The two sent apologies but the committee ‘rejected them with contempt’,” the legislature said.

Scopa chairman Hlomane Chauke said public money could not be spent in that manner, with Sebegoe and Mabe refusing to take responsibility and account for it. He said if media reports were correct, Mabe had acted in bad faith.

“They were given enough time to come and present facts to the committee and they failed to do so,” said Chauke.

“If we do not take action we will see the collapse of accountability in the province.”

Scopa resolved the matter be brought to the attention of premier Thandi Modise. – Sapa
