Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe managed to secure his first nomination from a province, but with a narrow margin, as nomination results for the ANC in Gauteng were announced earlier this morning.

The Free State, the ANC Veterans League and Mpumalanga also wrapped up their conferences in the past 12 hours.

In Gauteng, Motlanthe secured 238 votes while President Jacob Zuma got 173 votes from the just over 400 delegates eligible to vote at the party’s nominations conference, which happened at Turffontein Race Course in Johannesburg overnight.

For nomination as deputy president, Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale got 211 votes and businessman Cyril Ramaphosa got 175.

For secretary-general Gwede Mantashe received 249 votes and Fikile Mbalula 148.

Thandi Modise beat Baleka Mbete to the nomination for national chairperson, while Febe Potgieter-Gqubule beat Jessie Duarte for the position of deputy secretary-general. ANC Gauteng chairperson Paul Mashatile beat KwaZulu-Natal Premier Zweli Mkhize to become the province’s nomination for treasurer-general.
