Kaizer Chiefs suffered their first defeat of the season as they went down 2-0 to a determined Platinum Stars at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday.
Thuso Phala could have given a penalty away just four minutes in when he went down and touched the ball but the referee gave away a free-kick outside the area when it looked as though the ball was on the line.
The league leaders then had a great chance through Lehlohonolo Majoro who forced Siyabonga Mpontshane into a save just five minute in when the ball fell to him in the area.
Willard Katsande then lashed a long drive wide of the target seven minutes later before Thuso Phala worked Itumeleng Khune at the other end in the 15th minute.
The hosts were looking lively on attack though and in the 16th minute they would make the breakthrough when Phala picked out the run of Henrico Botes who produced a clinical finish.
The goal gave the hosts a boost as Chiefs continued to struggle to get their game going and just nine minutes later Stars would double their advantage when the ball was pulled back to Ngele at the edge of the area and his shot was deflected past the goalkeeper.
Khune was worked again two minutes later while Majoro got a shot off at the other end off of a Siphiwe Tshabalala cross but Mpontshane was up to the challenge.
Stars suffered a blow in the 41st minute with Ngele having to come off and he was replaced by Robert Ng’ambi.
Botes almost slotted a sensational goal for Stars late in the half when a ball was floated in but his spectacular overhead kick was palmed over by Khune.
Chiefs tried to kick things into gear after the break by introducing Lucky Baloyi and Kingston Nkhatha but Dikwena were well-drilled and kept their opponents at bay.
The visitors were restricted to strikes from distance but none were causing the Stars stopper any trouble while Botes lashed a shot wide at the other end before Sibusiso Msomi tested Khune in the 73rd minute.
Chiefs continued pressing in the dying minutes but poor decision making and tame efforts were easily dealt with by the home side as they handed Chiefs their first defeat of the season.
