Teams: Orlando Pirates 2-0 Bidvest Wits

Date: 24 November 2012

Venue: Orlando Stadium

Referee: Thabo Nkosi

Premiership champions Orlando Pirates reduced Kaizer Chiefs’ lead at the summit to one point with a 2-0 victory over Bidvest Wits on Saturday evening.

The Sea Robbers prevailed through goals either side of the break from Thabo Matlaba and Tlou Segolela at Orlando Stadium.

Earlier, Amakhosi suffered their first league defeat of the season, a 2-0 reverse to Platinum Stars.

In a dull opening half, Zambia hitman Collins Mbesuma fired wide from range following a miscued clearance from Wits goalkeeper Ryan Harrison in the sixth minute.

At the other end, Faty Papy and Sibusiso Vilakazi were likewise off target with their ambitious shots in the 12th and 14th minute respectively.

Mbesuma, who scored in the 4-0 rout of Black Leopards in midweek, earned a free-kick just outside the box midway through the stanza, but Khethokwakhe Masuku curled his attempt to the left of Harrison’s upright.

Bucs, however, took the lead 32 minutes in via Matlaba, who beat Harrison with a stunning 35-yard screamer into the top corner.

Masuku nearly pounced on a risky back-pass from ex-Kaizer Chiefs defender Tlou Mokekwane soon after but Harrison was alert and narrowly won the race to the ball.

The Clever Boys net-minder then made a sharp save at his near post to keep out a powerful effort from Mbesuma just before the interval.

Wits started the second period brightly, as Oefentse Nato’s scissor kick forced Senzo Meyiwa to make a crucial stop from close range in the 48th minute following good work from Papy and Vilakazi.

The visitors then strongly appealed for a penalty in the 55th minute, as Calvin Kadi tumbled in the box when tussling with Bafana Bafana centre-back Siyabonga Sangweni. Referee Thabo Nkosi, however, ruled in favour of the hosts.

Three minutes later, Vilakazi squeezed a shot just wide of Meyiwa’s upright.

Pirates, though, doubled the advantage in the 71st minute through substitute Segolela. The former Bloemfontein Celtic winger, on for Masuku, calmly chipped the ball over the onrushing Harrison after being put through one-on-one by Matlaba.

Wits threatened in the closing stages through efforts from Kadi and Tinashe Nengomasha, but Bucs held on for the three points.

Orlando Pirates: Senzo Meyiwa, Siyabonga Sangweni, Lucky Lekgwathi, Thabo Matlaba, Patrick Phungwayo, Oupa Manyisa, Sifiso Myeni, Daine Klate (Moholo 84′), Thandani Ntshumayelo, Khethokwakhe Masuku (Segolela 58), Collins Mbesuma (Chinyama 77′).

Stars were too bright for Chiefs

Image

Kaizer Chiefs suffered their first defeat of the season as they went down 2-0 to a determined Platinum Stars at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday.

Thuso Phala could have given a penalty away just four minutes in when he went down and touched the ball but the referee gave away a free-kick outside the area when it looked as though the ball was on the line.

The league leaders then had a great chance through Lehlohonolo Majoro who forced Siyabonga Mpontshane into a save just five minute in when the ball fell to him in the area.

Willard Katsande then lashed a long drive wide of the target seven minutes later before Thuso Phala worked Itumeleng Khune at the other end in the 15th minute.

The hosts were looking lively on attack though and in the 16th minute they would make the breakthrough when Phala picked out the run of Henrico Botes who produced a clinical finish.

The goal gave the hosts a boost as Chiefs continued to struggle to get their game going and just nine minutes later Stars would double their advantage when the ball was pulled back to Ngele at the edge of the area and his shot was deflected past the goalkeeper.

Khune was worked again two minutes later while Majoro got a shot off at the other end off of a Siphiwe Tshabalala cross but Mpontshane was up to the challenge.

Stars suffered a blow in the 41st minute with Ngele having to come off and he was replaced by Robert Ng’ambi.

Botes almost slotted a sensational goal for Stars late in the half when a ball was floated in but his spectacular overhead kick was palmed over by Khune.

Chiefs tried to kick things into gear after the break by introducing Lucky Baloyi and Kingston Nkhatha but Dikwena were well-drilled and kept their opponents at bay.

The visitors were restricted to strikes from distance but none were causing the Stars stopper any trouble while Botes lashed a shot wide at the other end before Sibusiso  Msomi tested Khune in the 73rd minute.

Chiefs continued pressing in the dying minutes but poor decision making and tame efforts were easily dealt with by the home side as they handed Chiefs their first defeat of the season.

P Stars: Siyabonga Mpontshane, Edward Tshabalala, Tshepo Gumede, Luvolwethu Mpeta, Vuyo Mere, Benson Mhlongo, Thuso Phala, Sibusiso Msomi, Innocent Mkhabela, Mogakolodi Ngele, Henrico Botes.

DA is for white maddams: Nzimande

Image

Durban – The Democratic Alliance is a party of whites, SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande said on Saturday.

“The DA is a party of white madams and baases (white bosses),” he told the KwaZulu-Natal ANC nomination conference in Durban.

Nzimande lashed out at those who said there was no leadership in the country.

“Those who say there is no leadership in South Africa, they speak for the rich.

“I did not know that electricity could be connected to a mud structure. It is the leadership of the ANC that brought that,” he said.

Nzimande said the ANC was the only organisation that could build South Africa as a non-racial, non-sexist and democratic society.

He urged the delegates who would represent the province at the party’s national elective conference in Mangaung to choose wisely, when deciding who should lead the ANC.

“Go and defend the majority rule. You can’t have people losing the elections and wanting to rule from the courts and from the graves.”

Nzimande also hit out at the media, saying it was not objective in its reporting.

He said the party should close ranks and defend the majority rule, especially from attacks on President Jacob Zuma.

“We (SA Communist Party) are not going to decide for the ANC who the ANC must elect. But khethani kahle maqabane (choose properly comrades).”

Nomination would take place on Sunday. -Sapa

Chiefs ready to dim Stars

Stuart Baxter said that he is not reading too much into the result that saw Platinum Stars losing their five game winning streak following a loss against Chippa United on Tuesday.

The Glamour Boys continue with their journey to Reclaim the Glory when they travel to Phokeng this weekend to meet Platinum Stars.

The Glamour Boys sent the Birds packing at Soccer City on Tuesday in a thrilling five goal thriller while Stars are still licking their wounds following a rare defeat in Cape Town at the hands of Chippa United.

We are not reading too much into the result on Tuesday. We are preparing here for a very tough game against a top team. We need to be at our best on Saturday to bring maximum points to Naturena, said Baxter speaking to kaizerchiefs.com after training at Kaizer Chiefs Village on Thursday.

We were back in training this morning. I had an opportunity to talk to the players about the game against Moroka Swallows. We are of course addressing the lapses of concentration at the back. It is very important that we control our games. The game against Swallows became more of an end to end stuff and you do not want that to happen. We need to be in control.

Kaizer Chiefs will have to do without the services of industrious midfielder and a brace hero on Tuesday, Reneilwe Letsholonyane due to bookings while one or two players will have to face a late fitness test to determine their availability on Saturday.

We are missing the services of Reneilwe (Letsholonyane) this coming weekend which is a blow for us. He is on a high following this performance on Tuesday. We will need to assess Tower (Eric Mathoho) who took a knock in the game.

For more details go to http://www.kaizerchiefs.com

Besides that we are looking forward to the game against Platinum Stars. They are obviously back on their turf this weekend. We need to be consistent and keep the momentum going, added Baxter.

Kick off for the game is at 15H30.

Zille:Freedom you cannot use is useless

Image

Gauteng-Democratic Alliance had their Elective Conference today in Boksburg,Birchwood Conference Centre.

DA president Helen Zille remains as the party leader after being elected unopposed.

“Democratic Alliance is a party that is fighting for freedom. Yes, we have our past leaders who fought for democracy, but how important it is when you have freedom but you can’t use it” she said.

“That is why here at DA we say Honour your past and own your future. Most of the people in the country felt hard done by the governing party” Zille adds.

The premier also narrated some few stories that believes could draw a bigger picture of which direction does her party want to take.

She also pulled no punches and encourages people of South Africa to stand up and fight for what they believe in.

“Stand up and fight for freedom. DA has done a lot of things for its people compare to the ruling party. So,we can only do more if you vote us in power. Vote for DA and what we doing in Western Cape and Midvaal in Gauteng will be passed on across the country” Zille said.

“Democratic Alliance is the only ideal party to help you achieve your objectives. Our mandate is very simply, Freedom that you can use” Refiloe Ntsheke said.

“Currently 71% of police failed fitness test in  Gauteng and they still serving us. Most people are migrating to Western Cape because of service delivery DA offers” she said.

The Sol Plaatje municipality halts water supply

Image

The Sol Plaatje municipality has decided to halt the controlled switching off of water in the evenings after water levels at the Newton Reservoir stabilised.

The municipality embarked on the water switch-off spree for two consecutive weekends recently after the main pipe, which supplies water to the CBD and townships burst. Residents were left without water, which impacted negatively on businesses too.

After the repair of the burst pipes, the municipality decided to switch off water in the evenings to let the water levels rise. Municipal spokesperson Sello Matsie said three of the four dams at the Newton reservoir were now at 13.5 feet.

“The fourth dam, which is still empty, will be filled once these three reach their maximum capacity of 16 feet. Hence we have taken a decision to stop cutting the supply of water to residents in the evening because problems were picked up with the opening and closing of the valves.”

Matsie said they picked up that some valves were not being opened, “which meant that some parts of town were not getting water even though the supply was enough”.

He said they were finally in a position where the inflow was exceeding consumption.

Malema:Government targets poor people

Image

Johannesburg – The government was targeting poor people because they did not have the money to defend themselves, expelled ANC Youth League president Julius Malema told a group of people on Friday in Lenasia, where houses were demolished.

“They target those who don’t have money,” Malema said.

He pointed to a block of flats near to where some houses had been demolished.

He said the government would not demolish the flats, because it knew the people who owned them had the money to take them to court.

“You’ll find these ones (the flat owners) have a hand in it (the demolitions) because they want to expand (their own building).”

The African National Congress was turning on its people, Malema said.

“It can’t be that the ANC… is eating its own people,” he said.

“They must give you alternative land. You must have a piece of land. It’s your right to have a piece of land.”

Malema told the group not to start rebuilding their houses, but to find alternative accommodation until a solution was found.

“Those who have suffered from demolition, be strong. We want you to be compensated… you’ve been crooked,” he said.

“We’ve come to give you support, even if there is nothing we can do. We can tell you: your pain is our pain.”

Community members sang and danced when Malema arrived in Lenasia extension 13.

Women stood around shouting: “I love Juju”.

Malema inspected the area. He was joined by suspended ANCYL spokesman Floyd Shivambu and suspended secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa.

Malema and his entourage climbed over the rubble of the demolished houses.

When Malema arrived at the front door of a woman’s house, she ran and dropped to her knees at his feet and cried.

Malema comforted her, telling her “don’t cry”.

He said the woman was brave because when they tried to demolish her house she went inside, refusing to leave. In the end her house was spared.

“We salute this woman. She has courage,” Malema said. – Sapa

Madonsela blasts her critics

Image

Johannesburg – People in positions of

power needed to provide proof that the office of Pubic Protector Thuli Madonsela is biased, she said on Friday.

“If you want to say there are inconsistencies in reports, you should be able to say that,” she said.

“But you can’t accuse me of being biased without pointing out specific provisions in my reports that don’t make sense.”

Madonsela was speaking at a Daily Maverick conference in Johannesburg.

She said officials had “maligned” her in public and claimed she was linked to political parties without providing proof.

“Sometimes in our country there are people who see the phrase ‘speak truth to power’ as a swearword or a phrase that is trying to shame or embarrass those who exercise power,” she said.

“Speaking truth to power is an act of friendship, it is not an act of destabilisation. Telling lies to those in power is a destructive act, because when they are headed for a cliff and you tell them it’s all rosy… you are leading them to failure.”

She said the government needed to be more open to working with her office.

“We believe that government should say what it means and mean what it says,” Madonsela said.

“If it does this, this would mean that when we investigate we would get full collaboration, and when we make findings there will be no difficulty with implementation.”

She also criticised the government’s procurement methods.

“When it comes to procurement services within the state, there hasn’t been due diligence and in the process the state has been robbed blind – cheated totally.”

Madonsela used the example of a one-month-old company receiving a tender when there were other more qualified and deserving companies.

She said her office received about 20,000 complaints last year. Most were from individuals who had personal issues with service delivery.

There were “warning signs” that the country was headed towards a situation like the Arab Spring uprisings.

“(However) we are not there yet,” Madonsela said. – Sapa

Ajax thumped Chippa United

Image

Ajax Cape Town beat Chippa United 3-2 in an exciting Cape Town Derby on Friday night at Cape Town Stadium.

Khama Billiat broke the deadlock, in the 17th minute, when he impressively went through Chippa’s defence to slice a goal past the keeper.

Their joy was short lived, however, when Welcome Qalanto beat Westerveld at the near post with an angled strike which hit the top of the net, just a minute after Ajax’s goal.

Billiat was in and among the action for Ajax and he nearly handed them the lead when his effort struck the woodwork just before the half hour mark.

Despite their efforts on attack it was Chippa who claimed the lead when Larry Cohen slotted the ball under the body of Westerveld 33 minutes in.

Ajax made an immediate response after the break when Musa Lebusa managed to connect with the ball, off a corner kick, and placed it into the back of the net just three minutes after the restart.

It was a comedy of errors for Kassaly who rushed off his line and miss-kicked a ball twice, which fell to Wanderson on the 62nd minute, who stunningly chipped the ball into the net to wrap up a wonder goal.

Chippa have close to six registered former Ajax players in their squad and they replaced one for another when Mfundo Shumana came on for Brent Carelse, however, there wasn’t to be any late equaliser from the Chilli boys.
