Zuma’s visit to Taung cancencelled

Taung- The presidency office explains that the visit of Jacob Zuma to Taung, North West was cancelled due to some other comittments they said in a stament.

President Jacob Zuma was suppose to visit the rural area of Taung on a follow-up mission. Zuma was expected to spend two days in Taung for the launch of another project called Masibambisani for rural upliftments.

PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma is currently out of the country and will join nine other heads of state as a “champion” of a United Nations (UN ) education initiative launched yesterday.

The initiative aims to go beyond simply providing global access to education by 2015, and will also deal with issues of quality.

At a summit in New York yesterday, Mr Zuma became a “member state champion” of the UN Education First initiative. The champions supported UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in a campaign to inspire greater commitment to and spending on education, especially in the world’s poorest countries, the Presidency said in a statement.

“The president’s visit was cancelled and we are very disappointed as there are many burning issues that we were looking forward to discuss” Kgosi Motlhabane said.

“There are projects that were launched by his deputy, mr Kgalema Motlanthe. And he was supposed to do follow-ups. We are so disappointed, but we accept the point that he is abroad” he said.

Mr Zuma said the initiative was “timely” as the 72-million children who were uneducated and the 700-million adults without basic literacy skills faced a life “with two hands tied behind their backs”. Future generations deserved a successful initiative.

“Universal access to quality education is essential for the creation of democratic and inclusive societies,” Mr Zuma said.

The initiative builds on the UN’s 2000 Millennium Development Goals, which aim for universal access to primary school education by 2015 and, importantly, at addressing quality issues.

“The president will not be able to travel to Taung as he is engaged in other project abroad and he visit has been cancelled, but the event will continue as scheduled” Lesiba Kgwele said.

SA is ahead in terms of meeting the goals, having achieved near universal access in the compulsory band of schooling for seven-to-15-year-olds. But the system is still widely criticised for high dropout rates after the age of 15, and because of the poor basic skills of even those who matriculate.

By Obakeng Maje

Johannesburg- Safa squashed rumours reported by certain local football magazine that the game against Poland has been cancelled.

The South African Senior Men’s National Team (Bafana Bafana) will play Poland and Kenya in two international friendly matches. The first clash takes in Poland on 12 October 2012 with the second scheduled for Nairobi against the Harambee Stars of Kenya on 16 October.

Bafana Bafana will leave for Poland on 8 October via Zurich, and the squad is expected to arrive in the Polish capital of Warsaw the following day (9 octobe).

South Africa departs early for Poland to acclimatise to the cold East European conditions.

The team leaves Warsaw on the morning of 13 October for Nairobi via Amsterdam and will arrive in the Kenyan capital on the same day. They will have two days of training before playing the East Africans.

Bafana Bafana head coach Gordon Igesund says he is looking forward to the two clashes as part of his bid to put his squad into shape ahead of 2013 AFCON.

“Initially I felt it was prudent to play African opposition considering we will be playing in the AFCON tournament in four months’ time. But after seeing the opposition available, I decided Poland was the best option,” said Igesund.

“Most of the top African teams are involved in the

2013 AFCON qualifiers, therefore we had no tough opponents to play against. We need to play strong opposition so we can be tested thoroughly, therefore, after considering all options which we had, I have no doubt in my mind that Poland will give us the test that we require.”

“We even considered Egypt which is already out of the

2013 AFCON qualifiers, but they are on tour in the United Arab Emirates. They could have been great opposition for us. We are not afraid to lose, that is why we don’t need to play weak opposition. We need to be challenged so we can see where we are. If any of the top African teams were available then it would have been a different ball altogether,” concluded Igesund.

Igesund is expected to announce his travelling squad next week.

Malema knew about the unlawful money, but “intentionally” took it: Court

Image

Polokwane – Expelled ANC Youth League president Julius Malema is accused of making nearly R4 million from corrupt activities, in papers filed in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court.

“The accused (Malema) did unlawfully and intentionally acquire ownership… of the amount of money,” according to the charge sheet.

Malema did this “well knowing” – or ought to have reasonably known (that) the money “formed part of the proceeds of unlawful activities”, it alleged.

He appeared in court on Wednesday on a charge of money-laundering, and was released on bail of R10 000.

According to the court papers, Malema had clear business ties with On-Point Engineers director Lesiba Gwangwa.

It was alleged that On-Point was fraudulently awarded a R53m tender by the Limpopo department of roads and transport, and that R43m of this had been paid by the department.

“During September 2009 the Limpopo department… identified the need for the establishment of a Programme Management Unit (PMU) to assist it with infrastructure, as the department did not allegedly have the capacity to manage this function.”

The charge sheet stated that the company’s services were to be used for three years as a PMU.

It was required that the company’s management be multi-disciplinary, consisting of architects, land surveyors and engineers.

The company also needed to have experience and knowledge in the design and construction of roads, traffic stations, overload control, cost centres and airport infrastructure.

However, it was alleged that On-Point was not multi-disciplinary, and that the people whose names it submitted as part of its executive were never employed by the company.

On-Point was accused of pretending to have extensive experience and knowledge, when in fact it had existed for only one month at the time it submitted its bid.

It had stated on its tender application that it had nine years of experience.

According to the charge sheet, Malema substantially benefited from the tender payment, using it to fund a farm worth R3.9m and to pay R382 655 for a Mercedez-Benz Viano.

Charges of corruption were brought against On-Point, Gwama Properties, Segwalo Engineering, and Oceanside Trading.

On Tuesday, four people, including Malema’s business associate Lesiba Gwangwa, appeared in court and were granted bail of R40,00

each.

They are accused of fraud, corruption and money-laundering relating to the tender.

Malema will appear in court again on November 30. – Sapa
