Malema arrives at Goldfield mine

Carletonville – Expelled ANC Youth League president Julius Malema arrived at the Gold Fields [JSE:GFI] KDC west mine, near Carletonville, to address striking workers on Tuesday.

Security hesitated for a moment on allowing Malema in, but a crowd went to the gate to usher him through.

His black 4×4 was surrounded by miners, who chanted and sang: “Those who have not seen him [Malema] will see him today.”

Production at the gold mine came to a standstill on Monday, when almost 75% of the workforce of around 15 000 downed tools.

A Burglar drinks all booze in house, and falls asleep on a couch

A burglar who fell into a stupor after helping himself to several bottles of alcohol at the Vereeniging home he broke into was arrested at the crime scene by police.

Afrikaans daily Beeld reported today that thieves had broken into the home of Dennis Stastney last week, after the family left for work.

“It looks as though they’d had a massive party here all day… if one looks at the amount of alcohol consumed, there was more than one burglar,” Stastney said.

The burglars ransacked the house and stole electronic items and jewellery, urinated on the beds and couches, and had a meal.

“They emptied five bottles of booze, including a bottle of brandy, a bottle of whisky, rum, wine and vodka.”

Stastney said he, his wife and two children arrived home around 6pm to find a man sleeping on their couch.

They notified the Vereeniging community policing forum, and police duly arrived at the scene, woke the intruder up and helped him into a police van.

“He was covered in alcohol and glue – he’d sniffed a bottle of glue I’d been using to put in wooden floors,” Stastney said.

He described the incident as “frightening”, as the intruders had obviously been familiar with the family’s routine. SAPA

Rugby player died after a head knock

Image

Johannesburg – A promising young rugby player from the University of Johannesburg, who would have signed a professional player’s contract on Monday, died over the weekend after bumping his head at a party.

Roché van der Westhuizen, 24, died in his sleep on Saturday night, several hours after he tripped on a step and knocked his head against a wall, Beeld reported.

His brother, Quintus van der Westhuizen, 34, said Roché had gone out with friends to celebrate winning a rugby match earlier in the day.

Roché was the prop for UJ’s second team in their Predator final against Rustenburg Impala on Saturday afternoon.

After he bumped his head at a Greenside restaurant, the group went to get take-aways, after which they went back to their Northcliff student home, it was reported.

“He fell asleep and never woke up… we’re not sure what caused his death, we’ll have to wait for autopsy results. It’s an absolute freak accident,” Van der Westhuizen said.

Border Bulldogs coach Paul Flanagan confirmed that Roché would have signed a contract on Monday.

“We’d been watching him for a while. It’s incredibly tragic that something like this could happen to such a promising young player,” he said.

According to information received, the workers were egaged in talks during the weekend and decided to go on illegal strike.

“The meeting was held at Jabula shaft during the weekend and we agreed to go on illegal strike” said our mole.

It seems the “Marikana massacre” prompted the situation around mine workers across the country as we saw many unrest in different mines in the past two weeks.

“The same thing that caused de strike at Marikana, the RDO’s wants R12 500,the meeting was held this weekend at Jabula shaft and all agreed to go on with illegal strike. When we knocked-off yesterday, there was a Notice at Bathopele Mine informing employees that they will be protected if they don’t join the strike” our mole yelled.

According to reports, the workers might down tools tomorrow and embark on ilegal strike.

We will keep you posted and our attempt to get the Batho Pele respond proved futile.

Pretoria – A convict stunned court

Pretoria – A well-groomed, self-confessed serial rapist and killer stunned the Pretoria High Court court on Monday when he explained what led to his evil deeds, saying he had different reasons for killing each of the women, but that in each case he had become annoyed with them.

John Mabuti Sape, 41, of Mokopane, told the court he had strangled his first victim with her scarf after raping her.

He strangled his second victim with the cord of her cellphone charger after raping her. To strangle his third victim, he used a shoelace. He said although they had sex, he did not rape her because she “was a prostitute”.

The family of Sape’s first victim, Agnes Masemola, an Atteridgeville school teacher, had been the proverbial Good Samaritans as they had taken Sape in to live with him.

He was a stranger to them, but they felt sorry for him and gave him a roof over his head.

Agnes Masemola was killed during the second week of Sape living with her and her husband and her parents.

Sape told the court that Masemola had asked him – on October 20, 2001 – to fetch her husband from a shebeen.

They returned home and continued drinking, he said.

“I believed her husband suspected I was involved in a relationship with the deceased.

“He was upset that I fetched him from the shebeen and this resulted in a fistfight.”

Sape said the husband left the house to sleep at another place and he was left alone with Masemola. He said he told the woman that she was the reason why he had become embroiled in a fight with her husband.

“I was aggressive and upset because of the fight. I grabbed her and forced her on to the bed. I forcefully had sex with her and because I realised she could tell her husband, I decided to kill her.

“I grabbed the scarf which was around her head and strangled her until she no longer breathed.”

Sape said he then went drinking at a shebeen and sold two watches he found in the house for money.

He said he had reported to the police station the next morning when he heard the woman was dead.

He was arrested, but the case against him was later withdrawn.

He killed his next victim nearly four years later.

Rebecca Madiba, of Mokopane, was also a teacher and he strangled her with the cord of her cellphone charger.

Sape said he also became annoyed with her, as he knew her well, but she rejected him, saying she had heard that he had killed a woman.

“She said she wanted nothing to do with me. I lost my temper, grabbed her and pushed her to the floor of her bedroom. I forcefully undressed her and raped her. I, in a state of anger, grabbed her cellphone charger out of an electrical outlet and strangled her.

“I do not know how long this took, but I realised after a while that she had passed away.”

Sape was not arrested for this murder and six months later, on March 14, 2006, he strangled his next victim with a shoelace.

He said Lindiwe Masangu was a prostitute and he killed her at the Nest Inn in what was then Andries Street in Pretoria.

Sape said he got a room and paid Masangu for her services before they engaged in sex.

She claimed to have locked the room and insisted that the lights be switched off.

Sape said he wanted to smoke a cigarette after sex, but realised his cigarettes and purse were missing. He immediately realised Masangu had pulled a stunt by leaving the door open and darkening the room, as someone had come in to steal his belongings.

“This is a common occurrence at brothels,” he said. “I became angry and lost my temper. I took a shoelace and strangled her. I don’t know for how long, but I realised after a while she was dead.”

Following his guilty plea, Judge Selby Baqwa convicted him on three counts of murder, two of rape and two of theft.

Johanna Gwangwa, sister of Agnes Masemola, said she “had a bad feeling” when her family took him in.

“The family are terribly traumatised by her death and her two children have to grow up without a mother.

“He never even apologised,” she said.

Julia Madiba, sister of Rebecca, said her sister’s three children are now virtually orphans.

“The manner in which my sister was killed is very painful to us.

“He is a brutal man who never once said he was sorry for what he had done,” she said.

Sape will be sentenced on Tuesday.

Most provinces return their budget unused

Image

In a written reply to a parliamentary question by DA MP Patricia Kopane, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said the five provinces had underspent on a cumulative allocation of almost R2-billion.

In Eastern Cape, the department was allocated a budget of R361-million. Its under-expenditure was R191-million.

Free State failed to spend R134-million from its infrastructure budget of R378-million, while KwaZulu-Natal incurred an under-expenditure of R228-million.

Limpopo reported an under-expenditure of R89-million from its R323-million budget, while in Northern Cape a grant of R420-million was given but only R262-million went to infrastructure development.

Motsoaledi said the failure to spend was due to, among others, delays in the awarding of tenders, roll-over budgets from the previous financial year, poor performance by appointed contractors and termination of contracts and subsequent court challenges.

However, Kopane yesterday slammed the underspending, saying it was unacceptable because of the ageing infrastructure at public hospitals.

“If funding is made available it must be utilised efficiently and effectively,” she said.ll
