Seven newcomers join Banyana camp

By Obakeng Maje

Banyana Banyana head coach Joseph Mkhonza has called up seven new players to be a part of the South African Senior Women’s National Team’s training camp. It will begin at the Wits University campus fields in Johannesburg on Monday, 1 October 2012.

The training camp forms part of the Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana’s preparations ahead of the eight-nation CAF African Women Championship 2012, which will take place in Equatorial Guinea from October 28 to November 11.

“A lot of lessons were learnt at the 2012 London Olympics where we played against some of the world’s leading women’s football nations, and we are looking at several new players to see what value they can bring to the national team set up, as we prepare for the CAF African Women Championship 2012,” said Mkhonza.

Durban Ladies (Sasol League KwaZulu Natal) striker Silindile Ngubane, with 11 goals, was the leading goal-scorer at the Sasol League National Championships held in Umlazi, near Durban in July and is one of seven called up for national team duty.

She will be joined by City Lads (Eastern Cape) holding midfielder Andisiwe Ndesi, along with tall Maluti Ladies defender Zanele Dlamini (Sasol League Free State). Dlamini, who is equally at home playing as a striker, was identified by the Banyana Banyana coaches at the Sasol League Road Show held in Welkom in March this year.

Another Durban Ladies player, central defender Charlotte Mshengu, who is comfortable playing in any of the defensive positions, has also been called to camp, along with speedy Letsete Ladies (Sasol League Free State) striker Makhanya Makhalala and KZN Police team goalkeeper BJ Dladla.

Midfielder Precious Matabologa from Kanatla Ladies (Sasol League Limpopo) has also received a camp call-up – she represented South Africa at the FIFA under 17 Women’s World Cup in the Caribbean in 2010.

University of Johannesburg (Sasol League Gauteng) midfielder Yola Jafta returns from a long-term leg injury that ruled her out of the London Olympic Games held in July.

However, Banyana Banyana will be without the services of midfielder Robyn Moodaly (High Performance Centre, Tshwane) for the remainder of the year due to matric exam commitments.

Overseas-based players in goalkeeper Roxanne Barker, a biology student at Pepperdine University USA, and midfielders in Kylie Ann Louw (Stephen Austin University, USA) and Nompumelelo Nyandeni (FC Rossiyinka, Russia) will only join the camp on 9 October.

Only twenty-one players will be registered for the CAF African Women Championship 2012 event, and the coach is expected to announce the AWC squad on Tuesday, 9 October.

World Rabies Day celebration in Manthestadt,Taung

BY Obakeng Maje

The North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will commemorate World Rabies Day on Friday, 28th September, by engaging on public education. Dubbed “Stand united; End Rabies”, the public education awareness which will focus on school children, will be done in collaboration with the provincial Department of Health.

This World Rabies Day awareness event will be held in Taung, at Manthe village sports ground.

Learners from high schools in Taung who will form part of the day’s programme, will start the day by participating in a 7 kilometer marathon that will be followed by Rabies awareness talk.

As confirmed by the MEC for Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Desbo Mohono, the basis for rabies prevention is vaccination of pets and avoiding contact with the potentially infected animals.

“This worldwide commemoration and awareness offer the opportunity for all to rally towards working together in guiding children on how to help animals and prevent their exposure to rabies”, says MEC Mohono adding that teaching the children more about rabies will help to eliminate this preventable disease.

The month of September has been declared Rabies month, and the department has since the beginning of this month embarked upon massive awareness and vaccination campaigns at schools, community clinics and community gatherings.

North West premier to address mourners at memorial service

Image

By Obakeng Maje

North West Premier Mme Thandi Modise is to deliver the keynote address and message of condolence at the memorial service of ANC PR Councillor Pauline Masutlhe to be held at Wonderkop Stadium in Marikana as from 2:00pm this afternoon.

The Councillor who served in Madibeng Local Municipality reportedly sustained rubber bullets wounds during a raid conducted by police at Nkaneng informal settlements on Saturday.

Premier Modise had earlier expressed condolences to the family on the loss of their loved ones and to the community on the loss of their loyal servant who was very helpful throughout the conflict and stood by the ANC branch and did not desert the miners.

The Premier has appealed that while authorities investigate the councillor’s alleged shooting and subsequent death, members of the public should remain calm and not speculate on the cause of her death as a post-mortem will confirm the actual cause of her death.

Bojanala Platinum District Municipality has in support of the Inter ministerial Committee (IMC) been responsible for coordination of support activated by government to support the family as it has done with all other victims of the Marikana tragedy.

Zuma’s visit to Taung cancencelled

Image

BY Obakeng Maje

Taung- The presidency office explains that the visit of Jacob Zuma to Taung, North West was cancelled due to some other comittments they said in a stament.

President Jacob Zuma was suppose to visit the rural area of Taung on a follow-up mission. Zuma was expected to spend two days in Taung for the launch of another project called Masibambisani for rural upliftments.

PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma is currently out of the country and will join nine other heads of state as a “champion” of a United Nations (UN ) education initiative launched yesterday.

The initiative aims to go beyond simply providing global access to education by 2015, and will also deal with issues of quality.

At a summit in New York yesterday, Mr Zuma became a “member state champion” of the UN Education First initiative. The champions supported UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in a campaign to inspire greater commitment to and spending on education, especially in the world’s poorest countries, the Presidency said in a statement.

“The president’s visit was cancelled and we are very disappointed as there are many burning issues that we were looking forward to discuss” Kgosi Motlhabane said.

“There are projects that were launched by his deputy, mr Kgalema Motlanthe. And he was supposed to do follow-ups. We are so disappointed, but we accept the point that he is abroad” he said.

Mr Zuma said the initiative was “timely” as the 72-million children who were uneducated and the 700-million adults without basic literacy skills faced a life “with two hands tied behind their backs”. Future generations deserved a successful initiative.

“Universal access to quality education is essential for the creation of democratic and inclusive societies,” Mr Zuma said.

The initiative builds on the UN’s 2000 Millennium Development Goals, which aim for universal access to primary school education by 2015 and, importantly, at addressing quality issues.

“The president will not be able to travel to Taung as he is engaged in other project abroad and he visit has been cancelled, but the event will continue as scheduled” Lesiba Kgwele said.

SA is ahead in terms of meeting the goals, having achieved near universal access in the compulsory band of schooling for seven-to-15-year-olds. But the system is still widely criticised for high dropout rates after the age of 15, and because of the poor basic skills of even those who matriculate.
