JOHANNESBURG – The South African Revenue Service (Sars) can now attach expelled ANC Youth League (ANCYL) leader Julius Malema’s assets, if he fails to pay the R16 million tax bill he was slapped with.

Sars confirmed that it obtained a judgment against Malema earlier in September following two years of fruitless discussions with him.

Malema is also facing charges after an arrest warrant was issued for him on Friday.

It is believed the charges are related to his Ratanang Family Trust and his controversial business deals with the Limpopo government.

The charges reportedly include money laundering and fraud.

The tax judgment was unopposed but Sars said Malema had the option of appealing.

The fiery politician’s money affairs had been a headache for the revenue service.

His half-built house in Sandton, north of Johannesburg, and a farm house in Polokwane and other properties can now be attached, which had been brought through the family trust.

Malema is expected to appear in court this week.
