Chiefs mauls Wits

Bernard Parker continued his scorching goal scoring form with a brace and helped Kaizer Chiefs to a 3-1 victory over Bidvest Wits in their Premiership match at Nelspruit’s Mbombela stadium on Monday.

Chiefs were 2-0 up before the break, with Parker scoring both and lifting his goal-tally for the league to seven this season.

The Amakhosi were rampant in the first-half and should have scored more, and the door was left open for Wits in the second period.

The Clever Boys did manage a goal after a better second-half performance, but Lehlohonolo Majoro scored the third for Chiefs just before added time to seal another resounding win for the table-toppers.

With the win Chiefs move further ahead at the summit of the table with 13 points after five matches. Wits, meanwhile, remain on five points from as many games.

Wits were unbeaten in their previous three league games coming into the match, but it was Chiefs – as the away team – who dominated proceedings.

Parker could not stay off the score-sheet long, as his first goal came in the 13th minute. Kingston Nkatha ran in behind the Wits defence from a throw-in, and managed to move the ball across the face of goal, leaving Parker with the simplest of chances to give Chiefs the lead.

Six minutes later Chiefs came close again, this time from a Siphiwe Tshabalala inswinging corner, Tefu Mashamaite headed just over goal from close range.

In the 26th minute, Parker turned his expertise to a set-piece. His free-kick from just outside the area, was deflected out for a corner off the wall.

Just after the half hour mark Nkatha was involved again, this time with a direct chance on goal. From a tight angle at close range – running onto a quick ball – his shot sailed just wide of target.

In the only decent chance for Wits in the first half, Matthew Pattison was responsible in the 33rd minute. His free-kick from 30 metres out was awkward for Itumeleng Khune in the Chiefs’ goal, as the ball bounced just before the keeper, but the Bafana No 1 shot stopper made no mistake with the gather.

Three minutes later Parker completed his double. After George Lebese went for goal, the Wits defence were unable to cover Parker, and falling back he was still able to find the target and make it 2-0 to Chiefs.

In the 52nd minute, Tshabalala went on a trademark bustling run down the right, and his shot from just inside the area required a good save from teenage goalkeeper Steven Hoffman.

Erwin Isaacs tried to pull a goal back for Wits in the 63rd minute. Chiefs midfielder Willard Katsande conceded a free-kick in a dangerous position 35 metres out, and was a given a yellow-card for his efforts. Isaacs went for goal, but his powerful strike drifted just wide.

Four minutes later, unmarked and in space in the box, Pattison could not hit the target as his shot rifled into the stands.

Wits were finally rewarded for their improved play in the second period through Calvin Kadi in the 81st minute. Asive Langwe provided the cross into the box and Kadi found the back of the net from the far-post.

Majoro scored the third for Chiefs in the 89th minute to thwart the Wits comeback, and claim the three points.

Satawu calls off strike…but!!!

Image

Cape Town – Last-minute talks may have averted a strike by 60 000 freight industry workers, that could potentially bring the economy to a standstill, according to Business Report.

The SA Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu), along with other unions in the transport and logistics industry, called off the strike after the Road Freight Association came with an offer.

The unions will take the offer to workers on Tuesday. If workers reject the offer, truck drivers would embark on a protected strike that could drag on for the rest of the week.

The strike could have disastrous implications, costing the economy millions and halting the transportation of fuel, coal, food and steel.

Workers are demanding a 12% wage increase but employers have offered an 8.5% increase.

The Road Freight Association’s labour relations manager, Magretia Brown-Engelbrecht, has advised members to make contingency plans, due to the disruptions that may arise.

Sars free to attach Malema’s properties

Image

JOHANNESBURG – The South African Revenue Service (Sars) can now attach expelled ANC Youth League (ANCYL) leader Julius Malema’s assets, if he fails to pay the R16 million tax bill he was slapped with.

Sars confirmed that it obtained a judgment against Malema earlier in September following two years of fruitless discussions with him.

Malema is also facing charges after an arrest warrant was issued for him on Friday.

It is believed the charges are related to his Ratanang Family Trust and his controversial business deals with the Limpopo government.

The charges reportedly include money laundering and fraud.

The tax judgment was unopposed but Sars said Malema had the option of appealing.

The fiery politician’s money affairs had been a headache for the revenue service.

His half-built house in Sandton, north of Johannesburg, and a farm house in Polokwane and other properties can now be attached, which had been brought through the family trust.

Malema is expected to appear in court this week.

The Phiri born midfielder has been one of the top scoring midfielders in the gold and black in the past four seasons.

It is because of his goals and sometimes his creativity that has seen him walking away with Kaizer Chiefs Player of the Season in 2008/2009 and 2011/2012.

Freight talks hit snag

Image

Wage talks in the freight industry have deadlocked. This means road freight operations will come to a standstill today. Trade union, the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) expects 80% of the sector’s 120 000 employees to down tools.

Unions have rejected an 8% wage hike. Prolonged strike action could affect petrol supplies across the country as well as the transportation of food because many of the union members are long-distance truck drivers.

Truck drivers have been threatening to go on strike after several months of failed salary negotiations with employers. Satawu has given notice of plans to strike from today, because of today’s public holiday the stay-away would not take effect until tomorrow, a spokesperson said.

“There is currently a recommended offer by the employers that we are considering, but we hope to check with our membership…. We are going to contact our members tomorrow morning,” the union’s Vincent Masoga told AFP. Masoga said truckers are seeking a 12% increase for 2013 and 2014.

He refused to say how much the employers’ association is offering, but local broadcaster Talk 702 put the figure at 8%. South Africa’s central bank has forecast that inflation will hold steady at around five percent through 2014.

The Road Freight Association of transport employers was not immediately available for comment. A strike could disrupt retail and fuel supply chains in the country, which was swept by violent strikes in its crucial mining sector in recent weeks. – Additional reporting by Sapa-AFP

More tenders for Friends of the Youth League (FYL)

ImageTwo men linked to the Friends of the Youth League (FYL) have allegedly benefited from multi-million rand contracts with the University of Limpopo, according to a report.

However, FYL spokesman Floyd Shivambu has rejected this as a “cheap and lousy claim”.

The university confirmed that in July last year, it awarded a R27.8 million tender for the conversion of a gymnasium into a laboratory to Collins Foromo, the Mail & Guardian reported.

Foromo was once a driver for expelled African National Congress Youth League president Julius Malema.

Foromo told the M&G he was invited to all FYL rallies, but he denied contributing to the organisation.

Questions have been raised about who funds the FYL, an organisation which was formed after Malema was expelled.

The university also awarded Mandla Seopela, one of the founders of the FYL, a three-year lease for dining facilities on campus, the M&G reported.

The newspaper was unable to establish the value of the deal.

The university confirmed that it awarded the tender to Seopela’s company, Bohlaleng Foods, in January last year.

Seopela has been quoted as a spokesman for the FYL, and works as a speech-writer for Limpopo premier and Malema ally Cassel Mathale, according to the report.

The newspaper reported that it had been told that the higher education department had questioned the awarding of the two university contracts, although the department denied this.

The M&G alleged that the FYL was using the university to fund its activities.

Shivambu denied this.

“This cheap and lousy claim is made because of comrade Mandla Seopela’s open and unashamed association with struggles of economic freedom fighters, which he said on various occasions is due to the fact that the leadership of the ANC Youth League… was treated unfairly and should be supported.”

Foromo and Seopela “have a right to be economically active and involve themselves in legitimate economic activities”, Shivambu said.

He called on the M&G to provide proof that university money was being used to fund FYL programmes.
