Nelpruit-The South African Under 20 National Team, Amajita played to a one all (1-1) draw against Nigeria in their first leg of the African Youth Championship qualifiers.
The clash took place on Friday, 21 September 2012 at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga.
Amajita’s Thabani Mthembu continued his unbelievable run with yet another goal in the 12th minute to give South Africa the lead going into half time.
But reigning champions, Nigeria, came back into the second half with more aggression and intent. Their efforts paid off in the 54th minute when Ajagun Abduliellel scored from a corner kick after the South Africans failed to clear the ball.
Amajita coach Solly Luvhengo says although he is not happy with the result, he was a bit disappointed that his side had conceded at home.
“I am happy with the team’s performance but obviously not happy with the result. It is not the end of the road as I believe we still have a fighting chance in Nigeria in the second leg. I believe we could have scored more goals but luck was not on our side. We have noted where we went wrong and it is back to the drawing board to work on those mistakes,” said Luvhengo.
Amajita travel to Nigeria for the second leg which is scheduled to take place in a fortnight.
