Malema has no impact: Zuma

President Jacob Zuma dismissed critics who accuse him of being out of touch with the people and brushed aside one of his most vocal opponents, saying populist rival Julius Malema had no influence and was “just talk”.

Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting with the European Union, shortly after a deal was struck to end a six-week strike at South Africa’s Marikana platinum mine, Zuma laughed when asked how he responds to those who say he has lost touch with the roots of the ANC and its voters. “They are actually wrong,” he said in an interview at his hotel in Brussels late yesterday. “I am with the people on a continuous basis in huge meetings. Those people are really just telling what they think without looking at the facts. I am very much in touch with the people.”

By Obakeng Maje

The South African National Under 20 Team, Amajita, defeated National First Division side Sivutsa FC of Mpumalanga by two goals to one (2-1) in a practice match that took place at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga.

The clash was part of Amajita’s preparation for the upcoming African Youth Championship (AYC) qualifier- first leg encounter against Nigeria which will be played on Friday, 21 August 2012 at the Mbombela Stadium.

Kickoff is at 19h00.

Amajita head coach Solly Luvhengo expressed his happiness at the result on the day. Thabani Mthembu and Lorenzo Gordinho scored for South Africa.

“Sivutsa is a very organised and strong side, they gave us a tough time, they gave it their all. We should just maintain the confidence that we have gained from this win and carry it with us. We are looking forward to a good and very competitive match against the Nigerians on Friday,” said Luvhengo.

“It is always good to win games, but the most important thing for me and the technical team was to look at certain players under certain situations on and off the ball. I am just not happy with the goal we conceded – it was easy. We must be weary of such mistakes when we face the likes of Nigeria who can punish us more so because this is a home and away fixture, which can be detrimental to us.”

The Nigerians are expected to arrive in South Africa on Thursday, 20 September 2012.

The U20 championship is scheduled to take place in Algeria next year (2013). Four top African countries will automatically qualify for the 2013 FIFA Under 20 World Cup to be staged in Turkey later next year.

Bafana can conquer Africa: Igesund

Image

By Obakeng Maje

Bafana Bafana coach, Gordon Igesund said if all South Africans rally behind the National Team, he is confident the team can win the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournament scheduled for next January here in South Africa.

“I think at the moment, there is a great vibe in the country regarding our national team and I know when this national team goes into the field and there are 60 000 people blowing their vuvuzelas and truly supporting the players and getting behind the team, we will be very difficult to beat,” said Igesund in an interview posted on

http://www.safa.net.

“If the boys continue with the positive attitude, we really can go places including conquering Africa of course,” he added.

The national coach said he was encouraged by the cooperation given to him by the South African Football Association (SAFA) and the Premier Soccer League (PSL) who were working together to make sure ‘we have a successful Bafana’ side.

Igesund said the two friendly matches against Brazil and Mozambique had given him an ideal foundation on which to build a successful national team.

He said he would continue to monitor all eligible Bafana players plying their trade overseas; though he insisted the bulk of the national team players should be drawn from the domestic leagues.

“There are plenty of players across the World who qualifies to play for South Africa. I still believe though that a good chunk of players in the national team should come from South Africa. It is important to understand that not all players that play overseas qualify (material wise) to play for Bafana. We have our own top players plying their trade locally. Only if the overseas player is better than we have at home, will he be called up,” he said.

On whether he would continue to rotate his goalkeepers, Igesund said much as he was spoilt for choice, he is not one person who believes in the rotation system.

He also sang the praises of his two assistants Thomas Madigage and Serame Letsoaka as outstanding individuals.

“I think Tommy (Thomas Madigage) and Serame (Letsoaka) are both excellent individuals and I think our working relationship and understanding could not be better. There is no doubt in my mind that together we can make Bafana a force to be reckoned with,” he said.
