Kaizer Chiefs defender Siboniso Gaxa has been called up to the Bafana Bafana squad to face Brazil in an international friendly match on Friday, 7 September 2012.

The Senior Men’s National Team (Bafana Bafana) arrived safely in the South American country on Monday, 3 September following a ten-and-a-half hour flight from Johannesburg.

Bafana Bafana held their first training session at the CT Palmeiras grounds in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

The clash will take place at the Estadio do Morumbi, the home of local side Sao Paolo FC.

Kickoff is at 15h45 local time in Brazil (20h45 SA time).

All but three players were present at the first training session of new head coach Gordon Igesund.

Greece-based defender Bongani Khumalo, Dino Ndlovu who plays in Israel are expected only on Wednesday (5 September); while Belgium-based defender Anele Ngcongca has been ruled out due to a knee injury.

Ndlovu also suffered concussion but has been allowed to travel by his club, and he will be checked by the national team’s medical staff before he joins his compatriots.

Ngcongca becomes the fourth player to pull out of the squad following the withdrawals of Steven Pienaar, Siyabonga Nomvethe and Edward Manqele.

“This is just a bad luck in terms of injuries. We have been dealing with nothing but withdrawals since the announcement of the squad last Thursday. It is a blow for us to be losing players like this, but there’s not much we can do, we have to soldier on. I have called up right back Siboniso Gaxa from Kaizer Chiefs to replace Anele and I expect him to fly out on Wednesday morning to be here in the afternoon,” said Igesund.

“This was my first training session and I was happy with what I saw. The players gave what I expected of them and the vibe was just great even though some of them were slightly tired from playing over the weekend and the travel as well.”

The players also enjoyed the session.

“It’s good to be back and having returned to the national team it was just a great training session. It was our first but I really enjoyed myself. It was more relaxed and we were able as players to enjoy from the beginning to the end,” said goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs.

The squad will have three more training sessions at the grounds before moving to the match venue on Thursday, 6 September.

NW to acknowledge Public Service week

By Obakeng Maje

North West Provincial Government will observe Public Service Week, which will be used as a platform for participation and engagement for the delivery of quality public services.

The Provincial Public Service Week will be launched and celebrated at Toska village in Kagisano-Molopo Local Municipality on Friday and will end on the 14th of September 2012.

North West Premier, Mme Thandi Modise said this year’s public service week must be used as a platform to review imperatives and challenges related to public service delivery.

“We must go out there to wake up the public service because it is one of those events where we need to reflect on the mandate that we need to carry, to deliver services to the people,” she said.

This year’s public service week will attract participation from senior managers from government, public servants across all the department and citizens.

It will be under the theme “15 Years of Batho Pele: Strengthening the Ethos of Batho Pele & Recommitment towards an Efficient, Effective and Development Oriented Public Service and Empowered Citizenry”.

Public Service Week is an integral part of the Batho Pele movement aimed at instilling and/or rebuilding good ethics, morale and pride in public servants to encourage the culture of providing quality services.

The week promotes inter-governmental relations by encouraging integrated approaches in rendering public services to effectively utilise limited government resources for improved results.

The platform further affords senior managers like Heads of Departments (HOD) and political principals an opportunity to engage with frontline staff and citizens to get a first-hand understanding of what transpires at different service delivery points.

The month of September has been declared public service month concurrently with the Heritage Month.

It will cover various strategic programmes across the public service intending to revive skills wisdom and energy of public servants towards better and improved service delivery.

Activities for the 2012 Public Service Month will include the deployment of senior managers to service delivery sites, sports activities, and unannounced visits to service delivery points, cleaning campaign, service delivery exhibitions and creating awareness to enhance access to citizens by provincial departments.

Also as part of a report back from unannounced visits at service points, a Provincial Senior Management Services Conference will be held on the 13th September 2012.

Image

By Obakeng Maje

Taung- North West Art,Sports and Culture department is still mum on the issue of North West Cultural Calabash that is scheduled to take place in Taung.

The Annual Cultural Event has been taking place for more than a decade even though it has its own challenges.

The  Cultural Calabash was allegedly been moved to Moruleng last year, but it did not receive the same reception it always endure in Taung.

However this issue of being moved was vehemently denied by its co-ordinator, mr Mogashoa when we spoke with him back then.

“The North West Cultural Calabash was never moved from Taung. In fact it did not take place last year as we still sorting some other issues like sponsors and partners” he said.

Mogashoa guaranteed that the annual event will take place in Taung as planned, however he couldn’t outline some plans as he claimed it was too early.

We contacted Mogashoa on Saturday to give us more details regarding the event.

“I think the relevant person to speak to is MEC of Sport, Art & Culture in te province” Mogashoa said.

Our crew contacted the acting Director of Communication from MEC office mr Vusi Kama who was not in the office by then as he had some other commitments and he promised to shed more light on Tuesday(Today).

“Unfortunately I am not in the office and I promise to get back to you tomorrow(meaning today) when i arrive back in the office” He said.

However our crew’s attempt to get more details about the Calabash issue proved futile as again mr Kama was not yet back in the office.

“I did not manage to get to the office and I will send you all details first thing in the morning. I will speak with organisers first” he said.

Image

Durban – A 23-year-old man pleaded guilty in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court to raping an 8-year-old boy, the Witness reported on Tuesday.

Siyabonga Dladla, who is deaf, was assisted by an interpreter skilled in the use of sign language during court proceedings.

Dladla admitted in a statement that on January 1 he had seen a child walking along the road and called him in sign language.

The boy resisted going with Dladla but he dragged him to a toilet and raped him.

A state psychologist found the child to be psychologically and emotionally traumatised. He now fears being in the company of older boys.

Dladla will be sentenced on Friday.

Top school close doors on Griekwastad murder accused teen

Image

Bloemfontein – Prestigious Grey College in Bloemfontein has decided not to allow the Griekwastad teenager accused of murder to go back to his boarding house.

This was only while he was awaiting trial for the murders of the Steenkamp family over Easter weekend, reported Volksblad.

The school governing body met shortly after the teenager was released on bail on Monday.

The chairperson said a lot of thought had gone into the decision and it was decided that it was in the best interests of all involved parties, including the boy, that he should not be allowed back in school or at the boarding house while he was awaiting trial.

The school would, however, supply him with educational material to help him keep up to date with his school work.

The boy’s guardian, Bennie Heckroodt, was shocked at the news.

“We’ve just cleared one hurdle then the next one appears. But we will tackle the problem and make a plan. It is important that he continues going to school.

After bail was granted, the teenager smiled broadly and hugged relatives and supporters.

Orlando Stadium to host prestigious cup final

ImageThe majestic Orlando Stadium will host this year’s MTN8 final between SuperSport United and Moroka Swallows.

This was announced by the Premier Soccer League (PSL) today, 03 September 2012. The MTN8 final will be played on Saturday, 22 September 2012 at 20h15.

This will be the second time that Orlando Stadium hosts the MTN8 final. The last time the awe-striking venue – which is in the heart of Soweto – hosted the MTN8 final was back in 2009 in a final that produced a feast of goals between Ajax Cape Town and Golden Arrows. Arrows won that final 6-0.

PSL Acting CEO, Cambridge Mokanyane said: “We are extremly excited to announce Orlando Stadium as the venue for the MTN8. We have already seen quality football during the quarterfinals and the semi-finals of the MTN8. I have no doubt that this final will produce another spectacular experience for South African football fans.

He added: “Together with our partners MTN, we will pull all stops to ensure that we put together a great event that will leave lasting memories on the minds and hearts of our supporters.”

MTN SA’s Chief Marketing Officer, Serame Taukobong, hinted at some exciting activities during the final: “MTN is all about connecting its customers with their passion for the beautiful game and with the MTN 8 final we aim to ensure that MTN customers have an unforgettable experience. For the final, MTN is working around the clock to put on an unforgettable spectacle,” said Taukobong.

He adds: “We look forward to hosting another MTN8 final at the historic Orlando stadium in Soweto. We are excited about the final and looking back at the amount of goals that have been scored in the tournament this season, there’s no doubt that fans will be treated to another exciting goal-fest encounter in Soweto”.
