The wooden mic of pick-up lines

broken-heart1

Being single – with all the virtues that come with it – is good, especially if it’s out of choice. However, for some people it is more circumstantial than anything else.

Granted, there’s only so much you can do about your looks and perhaps your wallet. But to lose out on love or perhaps a fling simply because you can’t string a descent opening line is plain lax and deserves a wooden mic!

IOL put together some of the worst pick-up lines that are guaranteed to deny you the golden ticket and usher you into the celibacy hall of fame… Share yours and let’s have fun.

‘Labour brokers won’t be banned’

DA MP Herman Groenewald, a member of the National Council of Provinces, has managed to extract from Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant an admission that labour broking will not be banned.

Groenewald asked what steps had been taken by the department “with regard to the mandate of the protest held by Cosatu on March 7 and what is the actual or estimated amount the economy has lost as a result of the protest (against labour broking)”.

The minister said the department “is mandated to collect statistics on strikes, lock-outs and protests using the Labour Relations Act (LRA) 9.2 form”.

She continued: “Regarding the Cosatu strike… the department is monitoring the process. This is done by sending LRA 9.2 forms to the bargaining councils, employer organisations and the Department of Public Service and Administration.”

These are helpful forms because “information to be collected will include the number of employees who participated in the strike, reason for strike, duration and wages lost”, the minister reported.

How to avoid being hijacked

The Automobile Association has released tips for drivers on how to limit the chances of being hijacked.

Spokesman Gary Ronald said: “Leaving your passenger window open just a fraction may prevent smash and grab incidents as it makes the glass more flexible, allowing the window to absorb the sudden impact of someone trying to break it.

“Also, stay alert, always make sure your car is locked and stop a few metres behind the car in front to leave room for a quick get-away, if necessary.”

A mother has told of her growing sense of unease when, arriving at home in Ballito after a holiday, she found her husband’s car was not there. They had travelled home in two cars, her husband ahead of her with two boys in his car.

Charmaine Killian was to learn soon afterwards that her husband, her youngest son and his friend had been killed in the horrific truck accident on the N2 on Tuesday.

“I am coping in the knowledge that my little boy, Kelvin, was an absolute child of God. As small as he was, he was very well informed and vocal about his beliefs,” she said, displaying a strength needed for her remaining two children.

Richards Bay – New universities for Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape will be located in the capitals of the two provinces, President Jacob Zuma said on Thursday.

“The seat and main campus for the university in Mpumalanga will be at the Lowveld Agricultural College, a site overlooking the city of Nelspruit and close to the new provincial parliament,” Zuma told a labour department jobs fair in Richards Bay.

“In the Northern Cape, it is our intention to establish the seat and main campus in the inner city of Kimberley, injecting new life and purpose into this historic mining city,” he said in a speech prepared for delivery.

These would be the first two new universities to be built since democracy in 1994.

“We are determined that these new universities should take their place among the network of higher education institutions serving and expanding our national needs,” Zuma said.

The location of these new universities had caused friction, with residents in Barberton holding protests and demanding the Mpumalanga one be based in their town.

Deadline to repair faulty scholar buses

iol news pic school bus dec 13

At least 203 of 485 buses in the Gauteng scholar transport programme are unroadworthy, provincial education MEC Barbara Creecy said on Thursday.

Speaking at the Randburg testing station in Joburg, she said there were 700 buses in the subsidised scholar transport programme, 485 of which had been tested so far.

Most of the buses found to be unroadworthy had defective brakes, faulty steering mechanisms, and loose wires and bolts.

“A lot of the buses had major oil leaks and their brakes were not effective, but I would not say they were an immediate danger to the public,” said testing station manager Charles van der Heere.
