Man killed in car deal gone wrong

NM GYM INSTRUCTOR 2

Ballito – A 21-year-old Ballito gym instructor, found murdered at the weekend, told a colleague before he met a car dealer that if he was in trouble he would give her a missed call. She was then to immediately phone his mother.

Craig Hall, who was found stabbed to death near the Old Greenfield Service Station in Ballito on Saturday, died in circumstances which his mother Roselyn Bega describes as something “out of a movie”.

What his family know for sure is that he was involved in a private deal to buy a R400 000 car.

He disappeared early on Thursday, apparently after meeting the car dealer. Bega told The Mercury: “We did not want him to buy the car; we shouted at him, but he said he had already put down a deposit of R20 000 and now needed to borrow another R25 000. We agreed to lend him the money which he paid over to the sellers. We don’t know who they were.

Heads to roll over Ngobi water disruption-Premier Modise

BY Obakeng Maje

A team from the Presidency’s Department of Performance Monitoring and Evaluation and North West Office of the Premier will be visiting Ngobi village and Moretele Local Municipality tomorrow, Monday to follow through interventions to ensure that disruption to water supply experienced at Ngobi village does not reoccur.

“Though the two-day disruption of water supply should have been reported sooner and escalated for prompt intervention, someone within the municipality’s technical section should take responsibility for dereliction of duty” said Premier Thandi Modise.

In welcoming confirmation that the Department of Water and Environment Affairs will be paying for coupon for electricity for the entire year, Premier Modise appealed to Ward Councillors and ward committee structures to monitor and take ownership of services delivered by government.

Eleven boreholes to alleviate water shortage in the area were officially launched by President Zuma as part of the Ngobi Water Project during his Performance Monitoring and Evaluation last month in response to an email that he had received from 47-year old Mmatsheko Pine before the State of the Nation Address.

In addition, another ten boreholes have been constructed in the area. The construction of 2,5MI water reservoir has already started in the area which also involves the electrification of boreholes and construction of pump stations.

Banyana Banyana friendly against Cameroon has been cancelled

BY Obakeng Maje

Cameroon scheduled to be played in Lille, France on Wednesday, 11 July 2012 has been cancelled. This is due to the Cameroon Football Federation not being granted permission by FIFA as their (Cameroon) application to stage the match was considered late.

The Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana will instead play a practice match against local club side Bayer 04 Leverkusen ladies team playing in the Women’s Football Bundesliga (German Women’s Premier League). They finished 5th in the league last season.

The encounter will now take place on Thursday, 12 July at 19h30 in Sportschule, Hennef. The Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana will no longer be travelling to France.

The South African Senior Women’s National Team arrived safely at Sportschule (Hennef) in Cologne, Germany on Saturday, 7 July as they conclude final preparations for the Olympic Games set to begin later this month in London.

“There’s not much we can do about the match, we were really looking forward to testing our strength against Cameroon but since it will not happen we will have to continue with our preparations. I believe Bayer 04 Leverkusen will also give us a lot of insight into how European teams play and we will go into that practice match with the same determination as though we were facing Cameroon. We still have Great Britain on our sights which will be another great experience for the girls,” said Banyana Banyana head coach Joseph Mkhonza.

The second match of the tour against Great Britain is still set to go ahead. The friendly clash will take place in Birmingham, England on Sunday, 15 July starting at 15h00 local time (14h00 South African time).

Mkhonza has re-emphasised the importance of using the time they have left before the Olympic kick-off wisely.

“With less than 20 days to the start of the Olympics, we are hoping to use this time wisely in refining our skills ahead of the Olympics. We must remember that we began preparing for this tournament during the Olympic qualifiers last year, we need to carry forward what we have learnt as we prepare to take on the world’s top athletes.” said Mkhonza.

“We have the support of millions of South Africans and we should do well by finishing what we started in style, we are the pride of the nation.”

Banyana Banyana technical director, Shakes Mashaba says that the South African Senior Women’s National Team has the potential to surprise the world and play magnificent football at the Olympics.

“We need to remain united, we have the potential to do above our expectations, and it’s all in the mind. We are amongst the number one teams in Africa, with the inclusion of Cameroon who qualified for the Olympics, we have what it takes to surprise the world and show them South African football at its best,” said Mashaba who addressed the players upon arrival in Germany.

“This tour will assist the entire team a great deal as we will be acclimatising ourselves to the European weather conditions and fine tune all we have learnt over the last year. We have to prepare ourselves mentally as we near the Olympic Games and we need to remain united as a team to achieve one common goal to perform at our peak,” said Banyana Banyana captain Amanda Dlamini.

Banyana Banyana, who now form part of Team SA, will begin their Group F Olympic campaign against Sweden on Wednesday, 25 July 2012 in Coventry. This will be followed by a clash against Canada on Saturday, 28 July and they will round off their group stage matches with a fixture against Japan on Tuesday, 31 July 2012 in Cardiff.

Roses United are the Vodacom League Champions

BY Obakeng Maje

Roses United from Free State are the 2012 Vodacom League champions after defeating Milano United from the Western Cape by four goals to two (4-2) on penalties in a tense final played at the Seshego Stadium in Polokwane on Sunday, 08 July 2012.
The match finished goalless after 90 minutes.

With both sides having already clinched automatic promotion to the National First Division by virtue of winning their respective groups, the grand finale was always going to be a closely-contested affair and, notwithstanding supreme effort from both teams, neither was able to find a way to break the deadlock.

It took two excellent saves from Goalkeeper and Player-of-the-Tournament, William Mothokoa of Roses United to deny Shaun Daniels and Shamiel Philander in the shootout to ensure the trophy will reside in Bloemfontein for the next twelve months. On the other hand, Milano can return to Cape Town with their heads held high to plan for new life in the NFD next season.

“I cannot properly express how proud I am of my boys. At the beginning of the season, we drafted a three-year plan for promotion and we have achieved it. Credit must go to everyone involved with this club for their unified commitment to reaching our common goal,” said former Bafana Bafana international John Tlale, who is the coach of Roses United.

“Congratulations the newly crowned Vodacom League champions. You have shown yourselves to be worthy winners and we wish you well in your endeavours in the NFD next season,” said Vodacom’s Regional Marketing Manager, Ishmael Hlomane.

With the expiry of Vodacom’s sponsorship agreement from next season onwards, SAFA will be assuming full responsibility of the running of the League.

“As we reach the end of this road, a new path opens up for the future and we would like to wish SAFA all the best going forward,” added Hlomane.

SAFA President, Kirsten Nematandani paid tribute to Vodacom’s role in establishing the league as a vital component within the structures of South African football.

“We appreciate the invaluable support and co-operation we have received from Vodacom during their sponsorship of this league. We are confident in our ability to maintain the high standards set over the course of our partnership,” said Nematandani.
The two finalists shared the spoils in the individual awards:

1. Player of the Tournament:   William Mothokoa (Roses United)
2. Goalkeeper of the Tournament:  William Mothokoa (Roses United )
3. Coach of the Tournament:   Theo Hempe (Milano United)
4. Top Goal scorer:    Yusuf Abrahams (Milano United – 4 goals)

SA football celebrates 20 years of returning to the international fold

BY Obakeng Maje

On Saturday, 7 July 2012, South Africa will be celebrating 20 years of returning to the FIFA football family.

After years of international isolation due to discriminatory apartheid policies, South Africa was re-admitted and played their first match on the 7th of July 1992 when they played Cameroon in an international friendly. The match was played in Durban’s Kings Park Stadium.

Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Doctor Khumalo scored the only goal from the penalty spot as Bafana cantered to a precious 1-0 victory. This was the country’s first ever international goal.

It has been a roller-coaster ride for this country since then.

Among some of the country’s major achievements to date are:

•Hosted and won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations tournament
•Won silver in the following edition held in Burkina Faso in 1998
•Qualified for the 1998 FIFA World Cup tournament in France
•Won the bronze medal at the AFCON edition hosted by Nigeria and Ghana in 2000
•Qualified for the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan
•Successfully hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament
Over the years South Africa has also produced players who have graced the international stage like Lucas Radebe, Benni McCarthy, Mark Fish and Steven Pienaar just to mention a few.

The country has also produced astute administrators who now occupy seats at both FIFA and CAF – the likes Dr Molefi Oliphant, Dr Irvin Khoza, Dr Danny Jordaan, Raymond Hack, Anastasia Tsichlas, Jomo Sono and Kaizer Motaung.

South Africa has also become training ground for most African countries, with some of our fields used by various national teams and clubs for training camps due to the magnificent facilities available.

“It has really been a rollercoaster of a journey since the country was readmitted into the FIFA family. There have been very exciting moments like the hosting of the 2010 World Cup but of course, there have also been really low moments,” said SAFA President, Kirsten Nematandani.

“That aside, I think this country has really taken its place among the world’s leading role players in the Beautiful Game. We look forward to hosting the 2013 AFCON tournament with great excitement knowing this country has never failed putting up a great showpiece,” added Nematandani.

Roses United joins Milano United in the NFD

BY Obakeng Maje

Roses United have been promoted to the National First Division following a tension-filled 1-1 draw against Baroka FC that saw them finish top of Group A of the 2012 Vodacom League National play-offs at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Friday, 6 July 2012.

In Sunday’s (8 July) Grand Finale to determine the 2012 Vodacom League champions, Free State’s Roses United will meet Milano United from the Western Cape, who also qualified for promotion after winning Group B.

Baroka, playing in front of a passionate home crowd, needed to win to overturn a two point disadvantage going into the match, but they fell behind to a 19th minute Patrick Ngidi goal, as Roses looked to snuff out any chance of blowing their golden opportunity.

Roses had a chance to further entrench their strong position early in the second half when Baroka goalkeeper, Veli Mothwa, felled Ngidi in the box. Mothwa redeemed himself by saving Ngidi’s spot-kick to keep Baroka’s hopes alive.

Buoyed on by the vociferous home support, Baroka poured forward in search of the two goals they needed but time and again they were repelled by the brilliance of Roses’ goalkeeper, William Mothokoa, who produced a number of outstanding saves.

The pressure eventually told eight minutes from time, when Archie Lekgele handled inside the box and Olaleng Shaku despatched the penalty past Mothokoa. A frantic ending saw a number of close shaves but Roses somehow managed to hold on until the final whistle.

Their overjoyed coach, former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, John Tlale, paid tribute to his team’s resilience.

“Physically, it has been a very demanding week and my players were feeling fatigued in the second half, but they still pushed themselves to the limit and I couldn’t be more proud of them. We have achieved our objective, which was to qualify for the NFD, so there is no pressure for the final, but we will still go out there to win. We want to be national champions,” said Tlale.

“Well done to Roses United. It is clear that the two best teams in the tournament have earned promotion and are worthy finalists,” said SAFA’s Director of Competitions, Jeff Monnakgotla.
“We anticipate a feast of quality football in Sunday’s final as a fitting conclusion to this exciting event.”

Vodacom Regional Marketing Manager in Limpopo, Ishmael Hlomane said, “We are delighted with the way the tournament has progressed to date, with encouraging numbers of supporters being treated to some excellent football. The efficient organisation has enabled the smooth running of the competition and we look forward to a fantastic grand finale come Sunday.”

In the other Group A match, Vardos FC (Gauteng) beat Morester Jeug (N. Cape) by six goals to one (6-1).

The final between Roses United and Milano United will be played on Sunday afternoon at the Seshego Stadium in Polokwane.

Kickoff is at 15h00 and the match will be broadcast live on SABC 1.
