Eight women and four men were arrested for allegedly setting classrooms on fire and damaging 15 computers during service delivery protests in Bona-Bona, North West police said on Saturday.

Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said the 12 people faced charges of arson, public violence and malicious damage to property.

They allegedly placed two gas cylinders in two separate class rooms on Wednesday.

“They opened them and set the classrooms alight… the staff room caught fire from the two classes and 15 computers which were in the room were badly burnt,” said Ngubane.

They also set alight three water tanks.

The residents were protesting over poor service deliver in the area.

The 12 were expected to appear in the Ganyesa Magistrate’s Court on Monday. -Sapa

Crowd gathers for mayor case

A large crowd gathered outside the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday morning ahead of the judgment in the case of the former mayor Matthew Wolmarans.

Wolmarans and his co-accused Enoch Mtshaba are appearing on a charge of killing councillor Moss Phakoe.

Phakoe was shot dead at his Rustenburg home in March 2009, two days after he had handed a document to former co-operative governance minister Sicelo Shiceka alleging corruption in the local municipality.

Gauteng traffic cops have reportedly come up with a way to make a cool R11 million a year.

Once again using motorists as cash cows, the cash-strapped National Traffic Police Unit is said to have instructed its officers to issue 15 traffic fines each a day.

f the 268 officers reach the target, they could generate more than R11 million a year.

According to insiders, the latest move is to keep afloat the unit launched last year with much hype by former transport minister S’bu Ndebele.

Warning over new Spider-Man movie

Balitto – Parents who let their children see age-inappropriate movies are causing more harm than they know, a Ballito clinical psychologist has warned.

Sumayyah Khan, a child, adolescent and family therapy specialist, says she has seen nightmares and bedwetting in traumatised little children for whom it is not “just a movie”.

“This is my issue. Many parents don’t take responsibility, and don’t pay attention to the age restriction when it’s a DC or Marvel comics story,” Khan said.

Off-duty officer suspected of killing friend

A night out ended in tragedy when an off-duty police officer allegedly shot and killed a 23-year-old manwho was sleeping.

Sakhiwo Njokweni, of Philippi, was shot once in the headin his shack after a night of drinking at a tavern on Saturday.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Andre Traut said a 24-year-old off-duty police constable stationed at the Bellville police station was arrested and charged with the murder.

He said the two men knew each other.

Horror train crash toll rises

Johannesburg – The death toll following a collision between a train and truck in Mpumalanga on Friday has risen to 24, police said.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Leonard Hlathi said 23 people were killed and 26 injured in the accident.

“The [truck] driver has been detained,” he said.

The man would face murder charges in Tonga Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks said that the truck had been carrying the farm workers on the N4 when it collided with the train at a level crossing between Malelane and Hectorspruit, at 07:00.

Transnet tweeted that the truck was carrying 44 passengers.

“We would like to extend our sincere sympathies and condolences to the families of those whose lives were lost and a speedy recovery to the injured.”

Maarohanye, Tshabalala lied: State

Molemo “Jub-Jub” Maarohanye and co-accused Themba Tshabalala lied about a crash that killed four pupils in 2010, the Protea Magistrate’s Court heard on Friday.

“Accused number one (Maarohanye) blamed accused number two, supported by his witnesses which are biased and have an interest in the matter,” prosecutor Raymond Mathenjwa said.

“Accused number two (Tshabalala) also blamed accused number one, supported by individual statements.”

The two face charges of murder, attempted murder, and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Terror group targeting local Christians: Bishop

Elite cops are investigating claims that terror group al-Shabaab is behind the murders of 14 Christians in the Western Cape.

The killings occurred within a 10-month period across the province, from Mossel Bay to Philippi, Macassar and Paarl.

All of the victims were Ethiopian Christians living here and the murders were initially thought to be random xenophobic attacks on foreigners.

The latest of these is a shop owner who was gunned down in Philippi last Friday.

Robbers get hot and heavy in court

Two robbers tried to get hot and heavy in a court while their trial was in full swing.

Witnesses and court orderlies were left with their jaws dropped after the couple ignored their surroundings and began making out like it was their last day on earth.

Police were left stumped as to what sparked the outrageous display of affection.

 

Some speculated that it could have been the excitement of being found guilty of theft charges in the reserved Mossel Bay court on Wednesday this week.

Baby bashers get 10 years in jail

Bradley Connor and Malinda Marshall were each sentenced to 10 years in jail for abusing their son, causing him to die blind and brain-damaged, News24 reported on Friday.

The sentence was handed down in the Johannesburg Regional Court on Friday morning.

Connor and his ex-girlfriend were found guilty of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in November last year.
