Mining houses should lead in energy efficiency programmes-Minister Peters

BY Obakeng Maje

Minister of Energy, Dipuo Peters has urged mining houses to play their part by taking a leading role in energy efficiency programmes, Peters made the call on the first day of the Provincial economic infrastructure colloquium held at Sun City outside Rustenburg.

Mining is the greatest consumer of electricity in the province using 63% of electricity supplied to the province as the province produces 84% of South Africa’s platinum,46% of the granite and 25% of the gold prpoduction in the country.

Minister Peters discouraged the use of grid connected electricity to power boreholes and agricultural irrigation schemes and advocated the use of solar technology to provide water and feed people.

Peters said that all municipalities in the North West Province are candidates for solar water heating, solar street and traffic lights and traffic light and retrofitting some of the tourism industry facilities and game farms.

Banyana Banyana looking to leave the Olympics on a high

]

BY Obakeng Maje

The South African Senior Women’s National Team (Banyana Banyana) will be looking to leave the Olympic Games on a high note, when they take the challenge to World Cup champions Japan in their final Group F fixture. The match will be played on Tuesday, 31 July 2012 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.

Kickoff is at 14h30 (15h30 SA time).

Despite defeats to Sweden and Canada, captain Amanda Dlamini’s team will leave the world’s greatest sports showpiece richer in football experience. This could prove to be of major value as they prepare to put in a bid to lift the CAF African Women Championship 2012 title in Equatorial Guinea in October this year.

The results in the first two matches mean Banyana Banyana will not progress to the next round.

But the sports world will remember the team for the superb strike from 45 metres out by forward Portia Modise which resulted in South Africa’s historic first goal in Olympic Games women’s football history. This was in Banyana Banyana’s 4-1 loss to Sweden on Wednesday, 25 July 2012.

Japan, ranked No 3 in the world, go into the match against South Africa at the back of Group F outings which saw them record a 2-1 win over Canada and a goalless draw against Sweden.

“We are looking forward to the match against Japan, as our styles are similar in that they like to keep and play the ball on the ground and so do we. We had hoped to do well in our opening two matches to stand any chance of proceeding to the next round, but it was not to be and I would like to applaud the whole team for giving their all. We have one match remaining in the competition and we are confident we can come with a positive result even though we know it won’t be easy,” said Dlamini.

“On behalf of Banyana Banyana, I would like to thank SASCOC, SAFA and our loyal sponsor Sasol, for all the support that they have given to our team and it was a privilege to be a part of Team SA at the London Olympics. We have learnt so much from these two games and we hope they will put us in good stead when we challenge for the AWC title later this year.”

North West has energy potential, nuclear and biogas niche – Minister Peters

BY Obakeng Maje

The North West Province has oil and gas potential that is being explored by the Petroleum Agency of South Africa (PASA), Minister of Energy Dipuo Peters revealed in her keynote address delivered at the economic infrastructure colloquium that commenced at Sun City on Monday.

Minister Peters said that the North West Province is well positioned to be a nuclear skills development hub especially in view of the role that the North West University is already playing by producing the world sought after nuclear professionals.

The Minister called on the provincial government to continue to support the university in its rare skills development endeavour.

Peters also identified the province’s competitive advantage to lead in biogas as cow dung provides another potential energy source.

“We also believe that we need to work together with communities on programmes like Working for Energy, where with the support of the South African National Energy Development Institute we can exploit the Biogas potential due to the fact that NW is the cattle ranch of South Africa,” she stressed.

The two-day colloquium themed “Growth and Development Colloquim: Strategies to unlock the economic potential of the North West Province” to focus on strategic development priorities of water, energy, economic infrastructure and roads identified by Premier Thandi Modise is aimed at:

  • ·         Establishing an understanding of the significance of infrastructure development to growth and development in the province
  • ·         Exploring infrastructure development to accelerate job creation
  • ·         Laying the foundation for the development of the provincial long term plan that is aligned to the National Development Plan
  • ·         Interacting with other role players in infrastructure development

The colloquium which has attracted public sector and public sector from across all spheres of government and the private sector ends on Tuesday.

Musa Khumalo

KwaZulu-Natal – When Johannesburg police circulated a picture of an alleged killer who had escaped from custody, alarm bells rang for their counterparts in KwaZulu-Natal, where some knew him for his sterling work as a police brigadier.

Zimbabwean Musa or Muzi Khumalo had escaped from a Joburg jail early last year, allegedly with the help of a warder, only days after he had been charged with murder.

Now there are concerns that he may have used his “position” in the elite Hawks unit to shut down opposition crime syndicates.

National police commissioner General Riah Phiyega and Hawks boss Lieutenant-General Anwa Dramat are determined to see him behind bars.

Johannesburg – A 16-year-old alleged victim of the so-called “Sunday rapist” recounted on Monday how she was kidnapped, blindfolded, and sexually assaulted.

“A bakkie stopped next to me and a man got out and pointed a gun at me,” the girl told the High Court sitting in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court in Alberton.

The girl, who was 14-years-old at the time, was testifying in the trial of Johannes Jacobus Steyn, who is accused of murdering schoolgirls Louise de Waal and Lazanne Farmer.

She gave evidence in camera as she is a minor. Her mother sat with her for support in a room outside the court. Her father sat in the courtroom.

The girl testified that her kidnapper, who wore a wig and large sunglasses, blindfolded her and drove her to an unknown location.

He forced her to smoke and tried to kiss her, but she pulled away.

“He told me to do what he says and stop being stubborn.”

She said she started crying. He undressed her and saw she was menstruating.
