Brave girl testifies about rape

Tshego* sat clutching her orange teddy bear, eyes nervously looking around the brightly decorated intermediary room.

Ntombi Zwane, an intermediary, adjusted the earphones on seven-year-old Tshego’s head as she listened to Johannesburg High Court Judge Kathy Satchwell on the other end.

“My name is Kathy and ndivela eBhayi. Ndithetha isiXhosa kancinci (I’m from Port Elizabeth and I speak a little Xhosa); do you think I speak Xhosa well?” Satchwell asked the little girl on Tuesday.

Tshego nodded twice.

“Today, we are all going to ask you questions … it’ll be hard work, but I’m sure for a girl in Grade 1 whose teacher claps for her when she does well, you’ll be okay… can you do that?” the judge asked softly.

“Yes,” Tshego replied in a barely audible voice.

Tshego was allegedly abducted by 27-year-old Simon Rikhotso on December 24 last year, while she had been visiting her grandmother in Thembisa.

Baby dies over hospital space

Durban – A pregnant woman, who was sent home from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital after being told the facility had no space for her to deliver her full-term baby, says her newborn died in utero.

Abigail Pillay, 28, said was thrilled when she received confirmation she was expecting her first child.

She said like any expectant mother, she thought of possible names, bought baby clothes, and was all set to welcome her bundle of joy into the world.

However, after not naturally experiencing labour on the scheduled date, Pillay was referred to the hospital from her local clinic with instructions that she was ready for induction – the process through which labour is forced.

Absa Women’s League National Championships Draw 2012

BY Obakeng Maje

Johannesburg – The draw for the Absa Women’s League National Championships took place at the Nasrec headquarters of the South African Football Association this morning.

The Absa Women’s League National Championships are scheduled to take place in Kimberly, Northern Cape with the Galeshewe Stadium hosting the opening and closing matches, while the AR Abass Stadium will be used for the group stages clashes.

The tournament kicks off on Friday, 3 August 2012 with the final scheduled for Women’s Day, Thursday, 9 August 2012.

This Under 19 tournament is now in its fourth year, having started in Tshwane in 2009. The other editions took place in Mafikeng and Richardsbay.

The tournament is a feeder to the Under 17, Under 20 and Banyana Banyana national teams.

All 52 regions of the South African Football Association hosted matches throughout the course of the season and the best players from each province were selected to participate in the National Championships.

“Absa should be applauded for this initiative as it has helped to produce some of our women football stars who are in the Banyana Banyana squad currently doing duty in London at the Olympics. The tournament has played a great role in grooming the future of this country’s talent,” said Sam Masitenyane, Chairperson of the SAFA Competitions Committee.

Some of the Banyana Banyana players who passed through this tournament are Amanda Sister and Zamandosi Cele, as well as Robyn Moodaly, who are expected to feature for the Senior Women’s National Team at the Olympics against Sweden tonight.

Moodaly has also represented South Africa at the FIFA World Cup Under 17 tournament in Trinidad and Tobago.

All nine competing provinces were all placed in a pot and a random draw was conducted to determine the schedule of fixtures for this edition of the tournament.

The current champions of the Absa Women’s League National Championships are the Eastern Cape having won the tournament in 2011. Gauteng won the previous two editions in 2009 and 2010.

“We are looking forward to the Absa Women’s League National Championships in August and we are confident that Kimberly will prove a wonderful host city and that our young female footballers will strive to give of their best as they aim to represent their provinces with distinction,” said Steward Masela, Absa Sponsorship Manager.

SA will not freeze in their Olympic Games women’s football debut

BY Onbakeng Maje

The South African Women’s Senior National Team (Banyana Banyana) may be the new kids on the block in terms of Olympic Games level experience, but statistics will be far from their minds when they represent Team SA, and the country, in their opening Group F fixture in Coventry, England on Wednesday, 25 July 2012 (20h00 kick-off SA time).

Thanks to the firm financial backing of Sasol, the South Africans have had a solid build-up to the Olympic Games, and will put Sweden’s statistics far out of their minds when they lace up their boots for action. Sasol is also the official sponsor of Team SA at the Olympics and Paralympics respectively.

While Banyana Banyana is placed 4th on the Confederation of African football rankings, the Swedes are ranked 2nd in Europe.

Sweden beat France 2-1 in the playoff for third and fourth places at the 2011 FIFA World Cup held in Germany last year, and it is these two nations that will represent Europe at the Olympics over the next few weeks.

South Africa’s head coach Joseph Mkhonza, who played as a striker for South African professional sides Kaizer Chiefs and African Wanderers in the 1970s, described the mood among the Banyana Banyana players as “nervous but excited, and can’t wait for the Olympic Games action to begin”.

“We have had a look at the match venue and have a fully fit team of 18 players to choose from for the match against Sweden,” said Mkhonza.

“We have known since we beat Ethiopia in September last year that we were going to play at the Olympics, so I don’t believe the moment will be too big for our players.”

Following the match against Sweden, the South Africans will play their next Group F fixture at the same venue on Saturday, 28 July 2012 against Canada (15h45 kick-off), before playing FIFA World Cup women’s champions Japan in Cardiff, Wales in their final group fixture on Tuesday, 31 July 2012 (15h30 kick-off).

The 12 teams have been drawn in three groups of four teams each, with the top two sides from each group and the best two third placed teams, qualifying for the last eight knockout stage of the competition.
