Ronald Lamola has slammed ministers for poor service delivery and called for their firing.

He was speaking at the ANCYL’s Nelson Mandela lecture in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, on Saturday.

Lamola singled out Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa, Water and Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa, and Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga for criticism.

“Those who say it was not their responsibility to deliver books must also be fired,” he said.

Lamola also criticised Molewa for not delivering water to Carolina.

He argued that ministers were quick to make claims that they would deliver but were quick to deflect blame when they came up short.

“When things go bad you say it is not your responsibility,” said Lamola.

He criticised Mthethwa for having a security fence built around his house with public funds.

“You cannot have a person where they built a security fence around his house and he do not know… how does he get in and out of his house,” asked Lamola.

He said public officials who conduct misdeeds must be fired regardless of who they support in the ANC. – Sapa

Robbers held after chase

Four robbery suspects were arrested after a high speed chase and a shootout with an off-duty police officer, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

“The high speed chase and a shoot-out with an off-duty member of the Hawks resulted in the arrest of four suspects on Saturday after their vehicle flipped into a ditch and exploded in Randburg,” said Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini.

He said one of the suspects was shot and wounded and was under police guard at a hospital. The fifth suspect escaped and police were looking for him.

“The police officer became suspicious when he saw five men loading goods at a house in Monument, Krugersdorp and suspected that they might have broken into the house.”

The suspects confronted him and one of them pulled out a firearm, said Dlamini.

“He also pulled out a firearm and fired shots. A shoot-out then ensued and he followed them along the N14.”

The driver lost control after turning into Malibongwe Drive and the vehicle flipped and rolled, he said.

“The vehicle had been fitted with false number plates. It was stolen in Kempton Park recently.”

All the stolen goods including laptops and a TV valued around R60,000 were destroyed when the vehicle caught fire.

The men will appear in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of housebreaking, theft, possession of a stolen vehicle and attempted murder. – Sapa

Rollout ‘roadblocks’ cause new traffic fine demerit system to stall

Copy of si National Traffic Police

The future of South Africa’s demerit-based traffic fine system, where drivers are penalised for road offences, is hanging in the balance.

Nearly four months have passed since the deadline for the implementation of the act – yet no new date has been set.

Now traffic authorities are questioning if the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (Aarto) Act will ever be implemented nationally.

The act’s rollout is managed by the Road Traffic Management Corporation – a body set up by the Department of Transport to ensure road safety.

For motorists, its implementation would mean authorities can deduct points from traffic offenders until their licences are taken away.
