Over 300 arrested in Soweto, Lenasia

Over 300 people were arrested on the weekend in Soweto and Lenasia, police said on Sunday.

Police used road blocks and stop and search procedures to arrest 312 people between Friday night and Sunday morning, said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.

“Four unlicensed firearms were confiscated and four suspects arrested,” he said.

Ten people were arrested for possession of dagga and three for dealing in dagga. The owner of a shebeen was arrested for operating without a permit. A man was arrested for possession of a stolen motorbike.

In total, 36 people were arrested for drunken driving, and the remainder were arrested for drinking alcohol in public.

“All these suspects will appear in the Protea Magistrate’s Court, Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court, and Lenasia Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (on Monday),” he said. – Sapa
