South African sportsmen once again proved to be world beaters on a day of high drama that first saw Hashim Amla make the highest Test score for a South African and then, hours later, golfer Ernie Els winning the British Open.
Amla crowned a record-breaking day when he first surpassed the highest individual Test score by an SA batsman before becoming the first South African to score a triple Test century as he finished on a mammoth 311 not out at The Oval in London.
Together with Jacques Kallis, the pair took their side to a commanding 637/2 declared against England at tea on day four of the first Test on Sunday before captain Graeme Smith declared with the Proteas 252 runs ahead on the first innings.
