Cosatu president Sdumo Dlamini has taken on the federation’s North West members who gestured in the air to indicate that they wanted a change of leadership in the ANC.

A few people were seen in Potchefstroom on Saturday making the gesture associated with football supporters when they want a substitution to be made in the field of play, just before Dlamini – who has been widely linked to those in support of a second presidential term for President Jacob Zuma – took to the podium to address one of three Cosatu provincial congresses at the weekend.

Before speaking, Dlamini broke into a song: “Samthath’uZuma, samfak’eLuthuli, sathi phatha Msholozi (We took Zuma, put him in Luthuli House and told him to govern).”

However, Auditor-General Terence Nombembe said he was excited by the fact that six new municipalities had joined the clean audit category, taking the number to 13.

The municipalities with clean audits were in KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and the Western Cape.

None of the municipalities in the Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, Northern Cape and North West received clean audit reports.

Dewani extradition hearing set down

Copy of CA_dewani0

Extradition proceedings against Shrien Dewani will resume on July 31 in the UK, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said on Monday.

Western Cape NPA spokesman Eric Ntabazalila said the hearing would take place at the Westminster Crown Court.

“It is a continuation of the earlier ruling which said that Dewani cannot be extradited until his condition has improved,” he said.

“The Westminster Crown Court asked Judge Riddle to monitor Dewani’s status so as to make a determination whether he was ready to be extradited.”

Dewani has repeatedly denied arranging the contract killing of his 28-year-old wife, who was shot in an apparent car hijacking while on their honeymoon in Cape Town in November 2010.

In March, Britain’s High Court temporarily halted Dewani’s extradition on mental health grounds, saying it would be “unjust and oppressive”.

At the time, the court said he would be extradited to South Africa as soon as he was fit. Dewani is being treated in a mental health hospital in his hometown of Bristol, western England.

Two men accused of taking part in the killing would go on trial a day before Dewani’s hearing, on July 30.

Pienaar move edging closer

Everton manager David Moyes is confident of completing the re-signing of Steven Pienaar before the end of the week.

A robotics professor in Singapore has invented a gadget equipped with motion-sensitive electronic “lips” that allow amorous but absent couples to exchange long-distance smooches via the Internet.

Shaped like a small head with oversize silicone lips, the “Kissenger” – short for Kiss Messenger – was unveiled in June at a scientific conference in Britain and is still being refined for commercial launch.

“It can be used between humans to improve their communication,” its creator Hooman Samani told AFP.
