Banyana Banyana central defender Janine van Wyk has recovered from a niggling groin strain and is in high spirits at the national team camp at the Sportschule in Hennef, Germany, sporting a new ‘London 2012’ tattoo on the right arm.
As the Sasol-sponsored South African Senior Women’s National team goes about their final phase of preparations ahead of the London Olympics, a relieved Van Wyk described the return from injury as a close call.
The injury kept the Palace Super Falcons (Sasol League Gauteng) defender side-lined for the past three Banyana Banyana matches and also saw her miss her club’s third consecutive Sasol League National Championship title triumph in Durban recently.
“Recovery time was running out and I made it in the week before this camp so I am delighted to be back in the Banyana Banyana team training here in Germany,” said Van Wyk, who has been capped 76 times for her country and has scored 8 goals wearing the Banyana Banyana jersey.
“I have been in this Banyana Banyana team since 2005 and missing out on my Olympic dream would have been a disaster for me. I am just so pleased to be back.”
While she was side-lined, the 25 year-old has been hard at work coaching schoolgirls and running a schools league competition on the East Rand where she hails from.
“After my playing days are over, I would like to move into coaching and plan on doing as many SAFA coaching courses as I can,” she added.
“I am really passionate about coaching and want to help the next era of talented women players to make the grade. I have been fortunate enough to represent my country and I hope someday I can help a young player enjoy the same experience.”
The past few camps and matches have helped to create depth in the Banyana Banyana squad, with 21-year-old Hallelujah Zebra Force (Sasol League Gauteng) defender Lebogang Mabatle having performed admirably in the centre of defence in the international friendly fixture against Nigeria in Lagos last month (June 23).
Head coach Joseph Mkhonza was able to take many positive lessons out of the goal-less draw encounter against the Nigerians, who are ranked No 1 in Africa in terms of women’s football.
The South Africans face German Women’s Premier League side Bayer 04 Leverkusen in a practice match on Thursday, 12 July 2012 (19h30 kickoff), and will face Great Britain in an international friendly encounter in Birmingham, England on Sunday, 15 July 2012 at 15h00 (14h00 SA time).
