Cape Town lesbians live in fear

Lesbians in some Cape Town townships live in such fear of attack by people who reject their sexual orientation that a group who went to a lesbian’s memorial service on Thursday were too afraid to enter Nyanga without an escort.

“We had to go and fetch them. We had to call some and tell them to avoid a few spots. They were really scared of going into the area,” Free Gender founder Funeka Soldaat said as about 100 people gathered in Nyanga for a memorial service for Phumeza Nkolonzi, a 21-year-old lesbian who was shot dead two weeks ago.

Soldaat said at a meeting earlier this week that activists had asked police to patrol the area where Nkolonzi lived and to be visible while her family and friends held the service.

“Lesbians who live in Nyanga are scared of being visible in their area because they fear being killed or raped,” Soldaat said.

Pretoria – The proposed purchase of a new Boeing 777 jet for President Jacob Zuma will not go ahead, Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula said on Friday.

She told reporters in Pretoria the procurement process was cancelled after the offer to purchase lapsed on June 15.

A US10 million (about R82 million) deposit would be returned in full, the minister added.

The ministry confirmed that there was also an offer from Airbus but that this lapsed two weeks later on June 30.

Mokoena Should Settle In A Day Or Two

Wits’ head coach, Roger de Sa, has explained that Aaron Mokoena should sort out his issues with Portsmouth in the next couple of days and will then be free to join up with The Clever Boys.

The Siya crew recently broke the news that Mbazo had agreed terms with The Students, however his move has been stalled because of negotiations at Pompey surrounding his release from the club.

De Sa has explained that he hopes the matter will be resolved soon and that he thinks the former Bafana Bafana captain will do big things at the club.

He told the crew, “I hear it’s going to get done in the next day or two, then we’re ready. Hopefully it gets sorted. He’ll be good for us both on and off the field, also he’ll be able to motivate the players around him, so the others will get better as well.”

How to live like a millionaire

London – The trouble is, darlings, it is very expensive to be rich. No sooner have you bought your big house than you have to extend it into an even bigger one, decorate it, put serious art on the walls, landscape the garden and staff it.

Once you’ve got it looking immaculate, just a few years down the line it will look tired again and need a rehaul. It’s a process is without end.

Holidays, meanwhile, escalate from travelling first class to taking a private jet. Hanging around at airports with the fast-food-eating proletariat is so irksome. And children in private schools must have expensive tutoring on the side to keep up with their gilded friends.

City Power will raise the price of electricity by nearly 12 percent this week. In return for getting permission to add less than 1 percent extra to the increase, the City of Joburg power utility must explain how it will cut electricity losses.

The National Energy Regulator of SA (Nersa) said on Wednesday it had approved an average tariff increase for City Power of 11.57 percent, with limitations to some of the tariffs.

As part of the approval, “the municipality must submit a report on how the high energy losses will be reduced by September 30”, said Nersa.

City Power loses nearly a fifth of the electricity it buys from Eskom, a loss of about R1.2 billion in 2010/11.

Mathoho: I love Kaizer Chiefs

Erick Mathoho says he is excited to join his childhood favourites Kaizer Chiefs, but says his family would have supported whichever move he chose.

Chiefs controversially unveiled the jersey, not the player, last week (the jersey even has a Twitter account), but the deal was finally sealed on Sunday, after months of speculation.

“It has always been my wish growing up in Tshiombo, that one day I would play for Kaizer Chiefs and I never had any doubt that it was going to happen this season,” Mathoho tells Chiefs’ official website.

The wooden mic of pick-up lines

broken-heart1

Being single – with all the virtues that come with it – is good, especially if it’s out of choice. However, for some people it is more circumstantial than anything else.

Granted, there’s only so much you can do about your looks and perhaps your wallet. But to lose out on love or perhaps a fling simply because you can’t string a descent opening line is plain lax and deserves a wooden mic!

IOL put together some of the worst pick-up lines that are guaranteed to deny you the golden ticket and usher you into the celibacy hall of fame… Share yours and let’s have fun.

‘Labour brokers won’t be banned’

DA MP Herman Groenewald, a member of the National Council of Provinces, has managed to extract from Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant an admission that labour broking will not be banned.

Groenewald asked what steps had been taken by the department “with regard to the mandate of the protest held by Cosatu on March 7 and what is the actual or estimated amount the economy has lost as a result of the protest (against labour broking)”.

The minister said the department “is mandated to collect statistics on strikes, lock-outs and protests using the Labour Relations Act (LRA) 9.2 form”.

She continued: “Regarding the Cosatu strike… the department is monitoring the process. This is done by sending LRA 9.2 forms to the bargaining councils, employer organisations and the Department of Public Service and Administration.”

These are helpful forms because “information to be collected will include the number of employees who participated in the strike, reason for strike, duration and wages lost”, the minister reported.

How to avoid being hijacked

IOL mot pic jul6 Pistol

The Automobile Association has released tips for drivers on how to limit the chances of being hijacked.

Spokesman Gary Ronald said: “Leaving your passenger window open just a fraction may prevent smash and grab incidents as it makes the glass more flexible, allowing the window to absorb the sudden impact of someone trying to break it.

“Also, stay alert, always make sure your car is locked and stop a few metres behind the car in front to leave room for a quick get-away, if necessary.”
