Johannesburg – Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi announced measures to beef up state health services at a conference in Johannesburg on Thursday.
These included sending more students for training to Cuba, building new hospitals, refurbishing nursing colleges and appointing a health ombudsman.
From September this year, 1000 matriculants will be sent to Cuba to train as medical doctors, up from the current 60 students per year.

Richards Bay – New universities for Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape will be located in the capitals of the two provinces, President Jacob Zuma said on Thursday.
“The seat and main campus for the university in Mpumalanga will be at the Lowveld Agricultural College, a site overlooking the city of Nelspruit and close to the new provincial parliament,” Zuma told a labour department jobs fair in Richards Bay.
“In the Northern Cape, it is our intention to establish the seat and main campus in the inner city of Kimberley, injecting new life and purpose into this historic mining city,” he said in a speech prepared for delivery.
These would be the first two new universities to be built since democracy in 1994.
“We are determined that these new universities should take their place among the network of higher education institutions serving and expanding our national needs,” Zuma said.
The location of these new universities had caused friction, with residents in Barberton holding protests and demanding the Mpumalanga one be based in their town.

Johannesburg – A man handed himself to police on Thursday after stabbing a nurse at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Gauteng police said.
Warrant Officer Kay Makhubele said the 38-year-old man admitted to stabbing his girlfriend, a nurse, last month.
“The man said he followed his girlfriend into the hospital before stabbing her several times in one of the wards.”

At least 203 of 485 buses in the Gauteng scholar transport programme are unroadworthy, provincial education MEC Barbara Creecy said on Thursday.
Speaking at the Randburg testing station in Joburg, she said there were 700 buses in the subsidised scholar transport programme, 485 of which had been tested so far.
Most of the buses found to be unroadworthy had defective brakes, faulty steering mechanisms, and loose wires and bolts.
“A lot of the buses had major oil leaks and their brakes were not effective, but I would not say they were an immediate danger to the public,” said testing station manager Charles van der Heere.

The South African Senior Women’s National Team (Banyana Banyana) departs for Sportschule, Hennef in Germany on Friday, 06 July 2012 for the final preparations of the London Olympic Games scheduled to start later this month (27 July).
Twenty-one players will make up the travelling squad, with Russia-based Nompumelelo Nyandeni joining her compatriots the next day (Saturday, 7 July) in Germany.
The Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana will play two international friendly matches against Cameroon and the Olympic hosts, Great Britain during their time abroad.
In the first match, South Africa faces Cameroon in Lille, France on Wednesday, 11 July.
Kickoff is at 14h00.
Cameroon will be the only other African country representing the continent at the Olympic Games.
They have been drawn in Group E along with Great Britain, New Zealand, and Brazil.
South Africa has been drawn in Group F along with Japan, Canada and Sweden.
The second fixture will take place in Birmingham, England against Great Britain on Sunday, 15 July to conclude their over-seas training camp.
Kickoff is at 14h30 (16h30 SA Time).
The squad will fly out of England on Monday, 16 July and is expected back in the country on Tuesday, 17 July 2012.
South Africa’s head coach Joseph Mkhonza is aware that this will be the last, and perhaps the most important tour for the team as they round up their preparations before competing against the world’s top athletes.
With several players coming from the Sasol League Championships that were held in Durban this past week, Mkhonza is hopeful that the players will carry the same energy and momentum to Europe. Six Banyana Banyana players played in the championships – Zamandosi Cele (Durban Ladies); Leandra Smeda and Nocawe Skiti (Cape Town Ladies); Nothando Vilakazi and Portia Modise (Palace Super Falcons) and Sanah Mollo (Bloemfontein Celtic).
“The players that took part in the championship will be given time off to recover to avoid overworking them as we approach this very important phase of preparations. Most of the girls that went there took part, and I was very happy with their enthusiasm at the tournament. Defender Janine van Wyk’s rehabilitation is nearing conclusion and we hope she will be ready for our matches in Europe,” said Mkhonza.
Mkhonza adds that with the time left to prepare for the Olympics, he would like to fine-tune his squad and use the experience gained during the African Women’s Cup qualifiers to get the team to a state of readiness for London.
“This is the last chance to work on any of our shortcomings. We have to finalise our strategy for the Olympics and build on what we’ve been working on since our qualification. The matches will help us gauge how far we have come and give us a state of our readiness. This is also the opportunity to make sure the players understand the importance of competing on the Olympic stage,” added Mkhonza.
Banyana Banyana is already in camp ahead of their departure and will be training at the Wits Education campus in Johannesburg.

Motsweding FM Station Manager, Sibongile Mtyali has more enticing plans for the national station. The station broadcast from Mahikeng, in the North West and cater mostly for Tswana-speaking people.
The station boast at least 3,2 million listenships and is one of more recognised in the country.
However the station experience some unrest in the past week when they untimely changed their most listened show presenters. On Monday the listeners surprisingly,woke up to the voices of their rather loved and precious presenters Kabelo “Kbizo” Molopyane and Felix DaCat who use to host Afternoon Drive Show.
The changes did not settle well with some of listeners who ruminated this matter rather on their Facebook Fan page.
It is a norm that Motsweding FM engages our listeners on an annual basis to review and evaluate our programmes. This trend is not unique to Motsweding FM but common across the radio industry both in the country and abroad” Station Manager, Sibongile Mtyali told our crew.
The Station handed the Afternoon Drive Show to lesser-fancy Douglas “Dmos” Mosadi and Tazzman Nkoane who hosted Breakfast Show before.
Miss Mtyali continues “Usually programme changes happen on April 1st in line with the beginning of a new financial year. Programmes are changed based on presenter strengths and capabilities, focus/strategy for each program and expected outcomes and targets of each programme” She explains.
This unrest do not unfazed the station manager who is adamant the show will go on despite indifference. Most of listeners demand the Afternoon Drive Show crew to be returned and do away rather old-timers as they called current show drivers.
“This year was different in that we needed to allow ourselves enough time to engage with all our stakeholders before changes were effected, especially our listeners.
We evaluate our programmes every quarter by means of on-air feedback session, New Media platform, SMS line & e-mail and this is what we are currently doing with our listeners
This process assists in giving us an idea of what listeners expect from the station and what their views are of our on-air personalities” Mtyali said.
Even though the station is going through this phase, Mtyali believes things will work out in no time.
“Moving forward, we will be engaging for the next few weeks with our listeners and at a later stage we will consolidate their views, which will contribute to our plannery activities” Mtyali said.

Mpumalanga commuters have welcomed 50 unroadworthy buses being taken off the road. But they’re frustrated at the lack of alternative transport. Many of the buses impounded yesterday, have not been released. Putco must first pay fines issued for all of them.
Leakages, worn tyres, exposed wiring and dysfunctional gears is what led to the buses being taken off the road. Commuters say they have no alternatives to get around.and at times fear for their lives.

Minister of the Department of arts and culture Paul Mashatile says South Africa needs to build a new nation through social cohesion. “We are trying to move away from pre 1994 definitions to say we are one people, lets move away from looking at each other as black or white, we are trying to build one nation,” says the minister.
