Johannesburg – SA Football Association CEO Dr Robin Petersen says the association will be indebted to Pitso Mosimane for the work he has done since his appointment as coach.

Mosimane was sacked as Bafana Bafana head coach, SAFA confirmed on Tuesday morning.

SAFA president Kirsten Nematandani revealed that Mosimane is the only coach that has assisted SAFA by donating a portion of his salary in the pursuit of the development agenda of the association which included assisting the ex-professional football players to attend the coaching course that is currently on-going at SAFA House.

Bafana drew 1-1 against unfancied Ethiopia in their opening match of the 2014 Soccer World Cup qualifiers in Phokeng, outside Rustenburg, on Sunday.

They face Botswana in another crucial qualifying fixture in Gaborone on Saturday, and they play Gabon in an international friendly in Johannesburg later this month.

Mosimane, 47, signed a four-year contract in July 2010, replacing Brazilian Carlos Alberto Parreira shortly after the national team was eliminated in the first round of the World Cup in South Africa.

He got off to a superb start, guiding Bafana to six victories and only one defeat in his first nine matches in charge.

Assistant coach Steve Komphela would take charge of South Africa’s next two matches.

Mosimane’s record as Bafana coach:

South Africa 1 Ghana 0 (friendly international – 11/8/2010)
South Africa 2 Niger 0 (2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier – 4/9/2010)
Sierra Leone 0 South Africa 0 (2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier – 10/10/2010)
South Africa 0 USA 1 (friendly international – 17/11/2010)

IOL cat helicopter june 5

As the old saying almost goes, there’s more than one way to spin a cat.

But until now, nobody has thought of turning one into a helicopter. This bizarre remote-controlled flying feline is the work of artist Bart Jansen.

Jansen said the Orvillecopter is part of a visual art project which pays tribute to his cat Orville, by making it fly after it was killed by a car.

Jansen had him stuffed and attached rotor blades to his outstretched front paws.

He built the Orvillecopter together with radio control helicopter flyer Arjen Beltman.

Royal repossession for KZN prince

nm mdlamini

By Kamini Padayachee and Tania Broughton

Despite his last-minute negotiations with Nedbank, would-be king, Prince Mmelizwe Dlamini’s luxury La Lucia home was sold for R3.2 million on auction on Monday to a Durban buyer who declined to be named.

Nedbank claimed in court papers that Dlamini had failed to keep up the R30 000 monthly bond instalments and owed more than R3m.

The bank obtained judgment against Dlamini in March and the house was handed over to the Inanda sheriff’s office for it to be auctioned off.

Last week, Dlamini’s lawyer Rajesh Sunker said his client was in negotiations with the bank to try to prevent the sale.

Dlamini has battled since 2003 to have the government recognise him as a king.

He claims he is the leader of the Nhlangwini kingdom, near Highflats and wants to be given the same status as Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini.

He pleaded his case for kingship before the Commission on Traditional Leadership Disputes and Claims in April this year and is awaiting its decision.

On Monday, the sale of the double-storey Ellingham Drive property was meant to start after 9am but was delayed because of a defect in a notice in the Government Gazette.

While potential buyers, including Pietermaritzburg businessman Sunny Gayadin, kicked their heels at the sheriffs office, Nedbank’s lawyers dashed to the Durban High court to get an order compelling Sheriff RR Singh to proceed with the sale.

In papers before Acting Judge Nalini Govender, the lawyers said Singh had told them on Friday that he would not hold the auction because the notice incorrectly stated that the conditions of sale could be inspected at the sheriff of Pinetown’s office, instead of the sheriff of Inanda District Two.

The lawyers said the mistake had been made by the government printers but elsewhere in the notice, and in the heading, the details were correct.

Acting Judge Govender ruled that the sale should go ahead.

Before the auction, potential buyers questioned whether an eviction order would be required to get Dlamini off the property once it was sold.

The Mercury reported last week that auctioneer Ian Wyles’s assistant Edward Nxumalo was kicked off the property when he had attempted to take pictures of the house.

After an intense bidding battle, a Durban entrepreneur purchased the house. He will have to pay an outstanding rates bill of R339 000 and is not guaranteed vacant occupation.

The Mercury tried to contact Dlamini for comment but was referred to a Penuel Dlamini, the Nhlangwini’s tribe’s head of protcol.

Penuel said he could not comment on whether Dlamini would move out of the home.

“It is a royal matter. We are not allowed to talk about it.”

Sunker could not be reached for comment. – The Mercury

Three kids die in house fire

iol news pic fire brigade june 5

Three children from Randfontein burnt to death on Sunday night after their house caught fire and a local fire engine did not have enough water to extinguish the blaze, it was reported on Tuesday.

The Beeld reported that Salome Jordaan, 11, Tanya Jordaan, 4, and Armand Jordaan, 3, died in the blaze, and their 14-year-old sister Adri, was seriously injured.

Kallie Hoffman, who lived in an outbuilding on the property, told the newspaper that emergency services took an hour to arrive at the scene.

Franz Olckers, a family friend, said they left after a few minutes to go and get more water at a local shopping centre.

The fire brigade returned half an hour later, but the house had burned down.

“Apart from the fact that the fire engine did not have enough water, it looked to me as if their pipes were full of holes – water was squirting through the sides of the pipes like fountains,” he said.

Neighbours said the Randfontein municipality had removed the family’s fuse box around two weeks ago, and that they had been using candles, one of which had presumably fallen over and caused the blaze. – Sapa

SAFA and Pitso agree to part ways

BY Obakeng Maje

The Emergency Committee of the South African Football Association (SAFA) held a meeting on Monday, 4 June 2012 to evaluate the performance of Bafana Bafana as a direct result of the first 2014 World Cup qualifier between South Africa and Ethiopia held on Sunday, 3 June 2012, which resulted in a draw.

The Emergency Committee considered the reports that were tabled at the meeting and mandated SAFA Vice President Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana and the CEO of SAFA Dr Robin Petersen to hold an urgent meeting with Mr Pitso Mosimane to discuss the matter.

The meeting was held at the Royal Marang Hotel in Phokeng near Rustenburg on Monday, 4 June with the coach, and both parties agreed to part ways amicably in the best interests of both the country and the national team.

Following the meeting, a report was considered by the Emergency Committee in the evening (Monday) after consultation with the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the decision was endorsed unanimously.

“The Association will be indebted to Mr. Mosimane for the work he has done for SAFA since his appointment as head coach of Bafana Bafana and we wish him well in his future endeavours.

This Association wants to place on record that Mr. Mosimane is the only coach that has assisted SAFA by donating a portion of his salary in the pursuit of the development agenda of the Association which included assisting the ex-professional football players to attend the coaching course that is currently on-going at SAFA House,” said SAFA President Kirsten Nematandani.

The Association has appointed Steve Komphela as the caretaker coach with immediate effect.

SAFA is pleased that both the technical team and the players have all endorsed the decision of the association and assured their country that they will do their best to represent their country in the best way possible, starting with the qualifier against Botswana and all subsequent matches.

“We appeal to the nation to also support the caretaker coach, the technical team, the players and the whole team going forward. We have entered into a crucial period of world cup qualification and we will need all hands on deck to ensure this country gets to Brazil in 2014, as well as perform admirably at the 2013 AFCON tournament that we will host,” said SAFA CEO Dr Robin Petersen.

Evidence in the murder trial of musician Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye and co-accused Themba Tshabalala was questioned in the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

“The evidence was seriously compromised,” video expert Riana Smalberger said during questioning.

Ike Motloung, for Maarohanye, explained how a cellphone showing the two men allegedly racing was confiscated.

He said the owner of the phone was first allowed to delete items from the phone and the police later tried to open the phone.

Smalberger said police should have used proper methodology. Information on the phone could have been deleted.

When asked earlier what would happen if this was done before a computer was confiscated, she said: “No, it’s unheard of. It’s forensically incorrect. You’re compromising evidence.”

On Wednesday, Smalberger, called by Maarohanye’s defence, came under fire.

She had told the court she found 13 video clips on a cellphone. Ten of them were deleted and two were still on the phone.

State prosecutor Raymond Mathenjwa wanted to know what had happened to the missing video and Smalberger replied that she had made a mistake, and that only 12 videos were found.

She told the court she started working on the video only on Tuesday, when her brief was to download it. That was why she had not made any analysis.

Mathenjwa accused her of being in possession of private information not relevant to the trial.

He said she was supposed to analyse the two video clips and was not supposed to retrieve deleted information from the phone. He was not clear on why she had failed to make an analysis.

Smalberger said she had been on leave and had only done a preliminary report, which she was unable to testify about until a full report had been completed.

Maarohanye and Tshabalala face charges of murder, attempted murder, and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

They were allegedly racing their Mini Coopers when they crashed into a group of school children in Mdlalose Street, in Protea North, on March 8, 2010.

Safa drafting an offer for Igesund

Word from Safa House is that Safa’s national executive committee is drafting an offer for Moroka Swallows coach Gordon Igesund.

Do you think Igesund should take over at Bafana?

Safa are expected to fire current Bafana Bafana Pitso Mosimane before the end of today after a string of poor results.

According to our source, “Safa wanted to sack Mosimane straight after the 1-1 draw against Ethiopia, but could not do it before the meeting.”

However, the Association is already making plans to meet with Igesund as soon he returns from China.

Contrary to reports, Mosimane is not in the management meeting currently taking place at Safa House; he is still in Rustenburg with Bafana. It is expected that he will be summoned to a meeting soon.

Nun’s sex ethics book runs foul of Vatican

The Vatican’s watchdog for faith issues has condemned a book on sexual ethics by a US nun, for reportedly expressing favourable views on masturbation and same-sex unions.

In a notification made public today, the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) highlighted parts of Just Love by Sister Margaret Farley, which it said “is not in conformity with the teaching of the (Catholic) Church.”

“Among the many errors and ambiguities in this book are its positions on masturbation, homosexual acts, homosexual unions, the indissolubility of marriage and the problem of divorce and remarriage,” the
five-page statement said.

The CDF said the notification, which has been approved by Pope Benedict XVI, intends to warn the faithful that the book, “cannot be used as a valid expression of Catholic teaching, either in counselling and formation, or in ecumenical and inter-religious dialogue.”

Just Love: A Framework for Christian Sexual Ethics was published in 2006. As well as being a nun, Farley is also a Yale University professor.

The CDF said that following an initial examination of the book, it had written to Farley in 2010 and 2011 indicating the doctrinal problems present in the text and asking her to clarify her position, but had received unsatisfactory.

Farley in her reaction acknowledged that her response to some sexual ethical questions “do depart from some traditional Christian responses”.

But in remarks quoted by the US-based National Catholic Reporter, the Sisters of Mercy nun said she had “tried to show that they nonetheless reflect a deep coherence with the central aims and insights of these theological and moral traditions.”

The CDF’s notification “misrepresents – perhaps unwittingly – the aims of my work and the nature of it as a proposal that might be in service of, not against, the church and its faithful people,” Farley added.

Blue light accident covered up: DA

The reported cover-up of a blue-light accident involving two of Gauteng health MEC Ntombi Mekgwe’s security staff was shocking, the Democratic Alliance said.

The accident allegedly happened on July 15 last year when Mekgwe’s staff drove into another car in Boksburg while using blue lights on the way to the airport to fetch Mekgwe, the Beeld newspaper reported on Monday.

“The driver of the MEC’s vehicle at the time and his companion should be charged and disciplined immediately,” said Gauteng safety spokeswoman Kate Lorimer.

She said it was unacceptable the two men were apparently using blue lights to get to the airport since Mekgwe’s arrival time would have been known in advance.

“What makes matters worse is that it seems the docket has gone missing.”

The accident had taken place, said health department spokesman Simon Zwane.

“It was an accident, yes. The MEC was not in the car. There was nothing untoward and the accident was reported to the police, and to the insurance company,” he said.

Lorimer said Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane and Gauteng’s MECs should start taking responsibility for the way their security staff behaved.

Blue-light abuse needed to be curbed, especially following the injury of Thomas Ferreira in November last year, she said.

Ferreira was knocked off his motorbike, allegedly by Gauteng local government and housing MEC Humphrey Mmemezi’s official vehicle, sustaining head injuries and spending weeks in a coma.

He now has improved use of his right arm and leg, which were broken in the accident.

The driver of the blue-light vehicle, Joseph Modomai Semietjie, a member of the police’s VIP unit, would be criminally prosecuted, and disciplined internally.
