Shoulders slumped under an oversized jacket, Thomas Nkhata clutched a ragged black file carrying the few official documents he had left of his wife Lydia.

His eyes wandered around the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complex in Sebokeng where he and the other families of victims of the Meyerton bus crash were about to meet officials from the Sedibeng District Municipality on Thursday to discuss funeral arrangements for the 19 people killed in the crash.

The Putco bus was carrying 74 passengers and travelling from Sebokeng towards Meyerton on the R59 when it crashed into the barrier line of a bridge.

Nkhata’s wife Lydia was killed. She was 47.

Two arrested for illegal cigarettes

Two Pakistani nationals were arrested near Sannieshof in North West on Thursday for possession of contraband cigarettes and attempting to solicit a bribe.

Police were watching a storage facility on a farm when two men were seen loading boxes onto their bakkies, said Captain Amanda Funani.

“Police approached them, searched the vehicle and discovered 39 cases of cigarettes with an estimated street value of R300 000.”

One of the men tried to bribe an officer with R2900, said Funani. – Sapa

Zuma should fly SAA – DA

Johannesburg – President Jacob Zuma should use SA Airways when flying, and the country did not need to spend R2 billion on a new aircraft for him, the DA said on Friday.

“If British Prime Minister David Cameron can use British Airways to fly, then Zuma can fly SAA,” said Democratic Alliance defence and military veterans spokesman David Maynier.

Kids in sex abuse case sue parents

Durban – They have had no contact with their parents whatsoever in nine years, and now four children who were removed from their Russian parents amid allegations of sexual exploitation want to sever all ties.

In an application in the Durban High Court on Thursday, advocate André Stokes – who has been appointed as curator for the four children, now 17, 11, 10 and eight – asked for an order terminating or suspending the couple’s parental responsibilities and rights.

If granted, it will mean that they can no longer stand in the way of attempts by the children’s foster parents to adopt them.

“They deserve finality and permanency after the drawn-out legal battles during the past nine years,” said Stokes in an affidavit before Judge Anton van Zyl.

“It is time for the adoption hearing to commence. The parents will not be stopped from participating in this but this application is aimed at preventing a situation where, through the unreasonable refusal to consent, they can frustrate the process.

“It also stops them putting their needs ahead of their children.”

This was the cellphone call Zina Lee Rotherham made to her husband, radio presenter Paul Rotherham, moments after a hijacker had shot her twice through the windscreen of her Renault Clio as she sat in rush-hour traffic.

One of the bullets hit Zina Lee in the abdomen, the other one smashed into her hand.

Rotheringham said he believed that his wife’s training as an air hostess then kicked in and possibly saved her life.

Semi-finalists confirmed at the Sasol League National Championships 2012 in Durban

Defending champions Palace Super Falcons, Bloemfontein Celtic, Durban Ladies and Cape Town Roses have all qualified for the last four of the Sasol League National Championships 2012.
The quartet will contest the semi-final on Friday, 29 June 2012 at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi near Durban.

Palace Super Falcons will face Bloemfontein Celtic and hosts Durban Ladies will entertain Cape Town Roses.

Falcons, without the services the injured Banyana Banyana players midfielder Mamello Makhabane and defender Janine van Wyk, were held to a two-all (2-2) draw by a determined Kanatla Ladies unit from Limpopo.

The reigning champions had to rely on a last minute penalty converted by former-Banyana Banyana striker Kgadi Makoma, after a Kanatla Ladies defenders was adjudged to have handled the ball in their penalty area.

Earlier, Disebo Mametja scored twice for Kanatla Ladies, while Mampa Tlhwaele netted for the Gauteng side.

Bloemfontein Celtic returned to winning form after their depleted unit was beaten 6-nil by Durban Ladies the previous day. The Free State side booked their semi-final place with a seven-one (7-1) victory over Al’s Puk Tawana.

Earlier in the day, Durban Ladies gave their home fans much to cheer about when they piled on the misery for Northern Cape side RC Mills, winning 10-1. The KwaZulu Natal representatives kept their 100 percent winning record at this year’s tournament intact, by outplaying Msiphuya Ladies by two goals to one (2-1) in their second match in the afternoon.

Durban Ladies finished top of Group A with 12 points after registering four wins out of four. They scored 27 goals, tied with second-placed Bloemfontein Celtic who are on nine points. Msiphuya managed to score 20 goals, but could only finish in third place with four points – same number of points with fourth-placed Al’s Puk Tawana. RC Mills had let in most goals in the group stages, conceding 45 goals and scoring only three. They lost all their four matches.

This group produced a total of 92 goals.

In Group B Palace Super Falcon finished top with seven points and were the highest scorers with nine goals.

Cape Town Roses were a close second with six points, third was Kanatla Ladies with four while City Lads came last with no points in three matches.

Group B managed 22 goals to give a total of 114 goals in the group stages for both streams.
The highest score recorded in one match saw Msiphuya Ladies FC defeating RC Mills by fifteen goals to nil (15-0).

Five teams will depart from the tournament on Friday after failing to make the last four – Al’s Puk Tawana, Msiphuya Ladies FC, Kanatla Ladies, City Lads and RC Mills.

The first match in the semi-final will kick off at 13h00, with the second starting at 15h00.

Should the matches be level after 90 minutes, the outcome will be decided via penalties. The same rule will apply in the 3rd place play-off and the grand final.

SARU, SAFA AND CRICKET SA LEAD THE DEBATE AT INAUGURAL SPORT INDUSTRY SUMMIT

The future of the rapidly evolving South African sport industry will be debated on the 25th October, when the country’s leading figures and most powerful sporting organisations and influencers gather for a day of discussion, innovation and exploration at the Sport Industry Summit in Johannesburg.

The South African Rugby Union, led by Jurie Roux, SAFA, led by Robin Petersen, and Cricket SA, led by Jacques Faul, have each signed up as Founding Supporters of the inaugural Sport Industry Summit. They will lead the debate on the state of sport in the country, share best practice and expand their industry involvement at the most influential business gathering in the history of sport in South Africa.

Roux, Petersen and Faul will each speak on the opening panel, covering issues as diverse as governance and ethics, commercial performance, development, and elite performance. This panel will mark a major first for sport in this country, as these CEOs take the stage together bringing their unique perspective to the wider industry. 

Jurie Roux, CEO at double world title-winning SARU, currently opening a new chapter within the sport, said: “These are exciting times for rugby: on the pitch we have a new captain, a new coach, and a new competition in the form of the Rugby Championship while off-the-field we have a significant number of new initiatives and commercial ventures in production. Now ANC wants just six provinces

South Africa might – if the ANC has its way – be reduced to six provinces in the next four years.

Though the proposal to have fewer provinces has regularly been raised by party officials, it appears that it has gained increasing support among delegates to the ANC policy conference in Midrand.

According to two senior party leaders, the legislature and governance commission has agreed to:

Merge Northern Cape, Western Cape and some parts of Eastern Cape. A combined Cape could give the ANC an upper hand over the DA in an election;

Johannesburg – More than 200 delegates singing songs in favour of President Jacob Zumadisrupted a walkabout by Deputy PresidentKgalema Motlanthe during the ANC’s policy conference as divisions among delegates spilled out into the open.

The group, mostly delegates from KwaZulu-Natal, stunned bystanders when they marched out of the lunch venue, holding up two fingers indicating both a second term and transition and singing: “uZuma yo, second transition. Sivumelana [we all agree]”.

They also sang “those who burn Zuma’s T-shirt will get a bullet” and other songs in praise of Zuma.

It started when, during Motlanthe’s walkabout, the group, which had dwindled to 70 stormed through the exhibition hall while singing pro-Zuma songs.

Crippled taxi impounded

A minibus taxi without a windscreen and headlights was impounded in the North West on Wednesday.

Provincial public safety MEC Nono Maloyi said the vehicle appeared to have been involved in a head-on collision, was never repaired, but kept on being used.

“The state of this minibus taxi is shocking. Our people’s lives are in danger.”

The taxi was impounded near Klerksdorp while ferrying passengers from Ottosdal to Johannesburg. – Sapa
