Chiefs sign seven

Kaizer Chiefs have unveiled seven new signings, including Erick Mathoho – or his jersey, at least.

Chiefs have also signed Siyabonga Nkosi (no. 10), Siboniso Gaxa (no. 5), Kgotso Moleko (no. 18), Sakhile Hlongwa (no. 28), Morgan Gould (no. 83), Kingston Nkhatha (no. 8) and Brilliant Khuzwayo.

Khuzwayo was not officially unveiled because he was playing for Thanda Royal Zulu against Chippa United yesterday.

Jessica Motaung admits the Mathoho deal is not completely done. “I was unveiling the jersey [Mathoho’s no. 3] and I was not unveiling the player.”

“But I’m confident that Mathoho will be a Chiefs player.”

ANC denies reports that 2nd transition was rejected

ANC spokesman Jackson Mthembu denied reports that the second transition proposal had been rejected by most provinces.

“We will not even talk about it [reports] because it is just nonsense. All that we know is that people might be saying ‘why don’t we use another name’, but the concept of what we need to do is most welcomed [by delegates],” he said on the sidelines of the conference on Thursday.

Premier Modise conveys condolences to family of slain nurse!!!

BY Obakeng Maje

The premature and gruesome murder of Kekgonne Patricia Kaoreka is a stark reminder that a lot still need to be done to protect women and girl children against the scourge of violence in our society, North West Premier Thandi Modise said ahead of 26-year-old nursing sister’s memorial service to be held at the Mmabatho Civic Centre in Mahikeng on Thursday.

“In conveying condolences to the Kaoreka family on the loss of their shining star, we wish to say that we are saddened and angered by their daughter’s murder at the prime of her life. She is like a rose that was picked before it could blossom. Her death has robbed communities of a health worker who still had so much to offer. Her achievements in her short but productive life were any mother’s wish for an ideal daughter,” emphasised Premier Modise.

Kaoreka who was a nursing sister at Carletonville Hospital was allegedly last seen alive on 9 March this year hitch hiking for a lift to Mahikeng. Forensic tests conducted on decomposed remains found on an open veld in Venterdorp two week ago confirmed that they were those of the missing Kaoreka.

She is to be buried on Saturday at the Mmabatho cemetery.

Modise appeals to women to refrain from hitch hiking or accepting lifts from strangers as the fight against the scourge violence against women is compounded by the fact that in most cases perpetrators are even known to victims either as friends and or family.

Donetsk, Ukraine – Portugal should be proud of their performance at Euro 2012, even if their campaign ended in Wednesday’s crushing defeat in a penalty shootout in the semi-finals to holders Spain, forwards Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani insisted.

“We didn’t lack for conviction but we were unlucky. That’s penalties for you,” said Ronaldo, whose frustration was apparent after he did not even get to take his kick as Portugal’s final penalty-taker, Cesc Fabregas had already wrapped things up at 4-2 to Spain, meaning there was no way back.

cape stadium

Independent newspapers

Anti-arms deal activist Terry Crawford-Browne has called for Cape Town Stadium to be demolished before it gobbles up more money, standing empty and unable to pay for itself.

We asked prominent Capetonians if they shared his view:

John Maytham, afternoon anchor on 567MW Cape Talk: “I don’t think we can afford to subsidise it forever. But it’s premature to demolish now. The city’s got to be given more time to commercialise it, to conclude the type of deals it wants to in order to make it sustainable.
