Buckley, Yende join Maritzburg

Maritzburg United have made some big signings: former Bafana Bafana international Delron Buckley, Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mthokozisi Yende and Dutch-born Curacao international Orlando Smeekes.

Buckley, who is originally from KwaZulu-Natal, returns to South Africa after 17 years in Europe, where he has featured mostly in Germany, but also Switzerland and Cyprus.

It also reunites the player with coach Ernst Middendorp, who he has previously played for at Bochum and Arminia Bielefeld in Germany, and briefly at Cypriot club Anorthosis Famagusta in the 2009/10 season.

Mphela ready to fight at Downs

Katlego Mphela is more than up for the challenge of reclaiming his starting berth at Mamelodi Sundowns.

Bafana Bafana’s first-choice striker had an indifferent 2011/12 campaign, especially in the second half of the season when he found himself on the bench playing second fiddle to Zimbabwean Nyasha Mushekwi.

His hopes of a quick return to the starting XI have been dealt a few blows in the last few days – he underwent knee surgery earlier this week, while The Brazilians have also added two more strikers to their roster in the form of Edward Manqele and Emmanuel Baffour.

However, Binkin says Mphela is aware of the challenges he faces and is more than ready to confront them.

Durban Ladies and Bloemfontein Celtics off to a winning start at the Sasol League National Championships in Durban

BY Obakeng Maje

Durban Ladies and Bloemfontein Celtics produced goals galore as they recorded comfortable victories on the opening day of the Sasol League National Championships at the King Zwelithini Stadium, in Umlazi near Durban on Monday, 25 June 2012.

Twenty two (22) goals in total were scored in just two matches.

Playing in chilly evening conditions, Durban Ladies ran out 9-1 winners with the hosts giving their fans much to cheer about as striker Slindile Ngubane netted five goals in taking advantage of poor marking and being offered much space to play in by the Als Puk Tawana defence.

Durban Ladies’ Banyana Banyana international Zamandosi Cele came to the party scoring two goals while Masego Ntoagae scored a consolation goal for the North West club who are making their first appearance at the national women’s club showpiece.

Banyana Banyana head coach Joseph Mkhonza and his assistant Jerry Laaka were among the crowd. The duo will spend the week monitoring the players.

Also in attendance were SAFA EThekwini President Alpha Mchunu and Nomsa Mahlangu, Chairperson of the Women’s Football Committee, who declared the games opened.

“Ladies you have a chance to impress, seize the opportunity. You are all aware the national team coaches are here so play your hearts out and show what you are capable of. It is these kinds of tournaments that help us identify talent for our national teams. As for you referees, this is also the time for you to improve you game. It saddens me that we don’t have enough women match officials in this country. Women’s football is growing, and it should do so in all fronts, not just on the playing personnel only,” said Mahlangu.

Earlier in day, Bloemfontein Celtics showed their intentions of mounting a serious challenge for the national title, when they thrashed Northern Cape-based RC Mills by ten goals to two (10-2). All of captain Motsamai Mokete (2 goals), Meide Howard (2 goals), Kokoane Loti (2 goals), as well as Nomtsheke Nomonde, Emily Moholoholo, Dombi Thabethe and Charlotte Mshengu found the back of the RC Mills net with the Keimos-based team contributing two further own goals to their own downfall.

Elvina May netted twice for RC Mills.

Results of Day One:
Bloemfontein Celtic 10    2 RC Mills
Durban Ladies           9     1 Al’s Puk Tawana

Four matches will take place on Day Two on Tuesday (26 June).

In Pool B, defending champions Palace Super Falcons open their account with a clash against Eastern Cape side City Lads at 13h00, with Kanatla taking on Cape Town Roses at 15h00.

13h00
Al’s Puk Tawana v RC Mills
Bloemfontein Ladies v Msiphunya Ladies

NEC has final say on coach’s appointment

BY Obakeng Maje

The South African Football Association (SAFA) would like to set the record straight on insinuations doing rounds regarding the appointment of the new head coach of the Senior Men’s National Team, Bafana Bafana.

For the record, it is standard procedure within SAFA that the Association gets recommendations from the respective committees on any decision, big or small.

As a result, the recommendation of the appointment of the coach falls within the domain of the Technical and Development Committee in line with Article 45.11 of the SAFA Constitution.

However, the responsibility of committees is purely to recommend, and any decision taken will have to be approved or rejected by the Association’s highest decision making body, the National Executive Committee (NEC).

“So it is irresponsible, disingenuous and disappointing for any member of the Technical and Development Committee to go out and express his/her views on the matter before this Saturday’s (30 June 2012) NEC meeting. This is literally jumping the gun,” said SAFA President Kirsten Nematandani.

The SAFA President added that for a big decision such as that of the appointment of the Senior Men’s National Team head coach, all issues had to be discussed, dissected and scrutinised by the NEC before an appointment is made.

“So it is very wrong to conclude that because the Technical and Development Committee has said one, two or three, we should rubber-stamp that decision. That is not how such a people-oriented organisation like SAFA works. This is a national issue which has to be handled very carefully.

“We want, if we take a decision, to have been above board and that verdict must be accepted by the entire NEC members,” added Nematandani.

SAFA will hold an NEC meeting on Saturday (30 June) where the new Bafana Bafana coach is expected to be announced.

Zuma: White males still control economy

South Africa’s economy is still mostly under the control of whites who held power under apartheid and the government needs to take more drastic steps to make sure the black majority can benefit from its wealth, President Jacob Zuma said on Tuesday.

Zuma, speaking at the start of the four-day ANC policy conference at Gallagher Estate in Midrand, said the challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality posed long-term risks for Africa’s richest country 18 years after the end of apartheid.
